A seemingly odd combination of rauchbier and Berliner Weisse, but it works fairly well. Tart and smokey elements mix together well thanks to a restrained use of smoked grains. Time for other brewers to revive this old style brew.

Smoked lichtenhainer weisse, sour and tart wheat based smoked beer. $6 at CBX in Charleston.
A: pours a deep and rich honey yellow, thick one finger bright white foam head, some spotty lacing, some carbonation, and some sediment.
S: sour Oak wood, musty grass or hay, grass pollen, lemon, medicinal herbs, light smokiness but I'm not sure how the smokiness is introduced
M: medium and thin towards the finish, creamy carbonation on the tongue.
T: tart and wheat like the label says, lemon, citrus, sour Oak, hay, pepper, light golden grain
O:interesting smoked weisse beer, okay and I would drink more but seek out as must have, complex flavor and aroma brings enjoyment when rating this beer.

Bottle at Redlight Redlight. Pours a slightly hazy pale orange with a good amount of tight, white head that held about 30 seconds before fading into a thin collar. Good lacing. A weird kind of funk to the aroma of this beer, almost like a spoiled cheese. I also get some orangey citrus and dry grass. Taste is very similar. The citrus up front, the grass in the middle, and the bleu cheese funk throughout. Nice carbonation, medium to high; and a nice medium-light body.

light fizzy fluffy head covering, nice lacing, hazy golden orange

Nose smoke city, smoked cheese, smoldering campfire, little meat, wheat and grainy, toasty.

Taste Smokey, smoked cheese, little smoked meat, little sweet candy, toasty wheat and creamy, mild bitter, hint fruity and touch sour, grainy with little yeasty too, chewy hops. Finish is fairly bitter, creamy, smoke and fruity little tart.

Mouth mild creamy med bod, nice fluffy carb.

Poured from the bottle into a hefe glass. Looks like a normal wheat beer. Aroma is light and not as smoky as expected. The flavor though is very unique. The sourness hits your first, then the smokiness lingers on your palate after you swallow. Very smooth and clean beer. Really enjoyed this one. I love the intermingling of smoke and sour. One of my new favorite styles.

Pours from the bottle cloudy grainy hazy golden with a one finger white head. Aroma is weird! Smokey wheat and spice, yeast funk. Flavor is fruited smoked bacon, apple, hint of yeast and spice. A smoked brew for sure. Light medium body with plenty of carbonation. Lingering smoke. This is weird. Not bad, but a strange combo of light weisse and dark smoke.

Poured out of a 500ml bottle into a wine glass as part of the Freigeist Bierkultur tasting flight at Trappist Provisions. While it's listed as a Berliner Weiss on the website, the bottle states that this is a "smoked Liechtensteiner weiss." Wouldn't this then technically be more like a Grodziskie in that case? I anticipated smoke over sourness, and by golly, did I get it.

Pours a slightly hazy, dull amber could with light brownish tones. Considering the yeastiness and wheat malts present in the beer, I expected better head retention, which is nearly inexistent. Loses its carbonation rapidly over the course of a half hour, and by the end it appeared rather still and syrupy. Definitely not a good looking beer by any means, but I can't dock it completely as the glassware is perhaps not the most appropriate for this type of beer to begin with.

The aroma is filled with smoky and caramelized notes overall, leading to the same kinds of flavors that I often have found in top quality Rauchbiers. Smoked ham, turkey bacon, and notes of raisins and bruised red apples. The slightly toasted or burnt caramel notes are pervasive, and make this sweetened at the end. This, in turn, cuts down the strength of the overwhelming notes of smoked meat. Slightly yeasty and funky, with barnyard notes of wet straw. (This also seems to be the brewery's trademark aroma.) Really intense stuff at times, but quite a pleasure to whiff on for fans of Virginia honey-glazed ham.

One sip of this and the entire palate becomes completely coated with huge notes of smoky ham and turkey, as well as an increased sweetness from the caramelized sugars. Combined with pervasive notes of pears, raisins, and toffee, this actually resembles a fabulous meal of sorts. Every time I'd close my eyes after each sip I'd imagine I was eating a ham or duck dish paired with a brandy-pear raisin sauce of sorts, alongside freshly baked wheat bread. Somehow, however, the smoke becomes increasingly oppressive, and as this warms up, notes of extreme cheese rinds and damp straw start to take over the fruity notes, leaving nothing but smoke, meat, and funk behind. The syrupy and under-carbonated feel actually makes this pretty decadent to drink, but it's not refreshing or drinkable in the most practical sense imaginable. Intense stuff!

I think my love affair with smoked beers is increasing, but it's definitely not the most practical option if it's something I want to sip on for a good long while. On the other hand, I'm so glad to finally try a much better take on a Grodziskie, and this would pair marvelously with food. Really good stuff, but not as drinkable as I'd like it to be. Fans of smoked beers must try this one.
