Has an english bitter quality to it. Good malty flavor. Not bad.

* Finally found this long-time want at a bottle shop in Waterbury, VT while on vacation w/ the family. Sampled next to Long Trail Double Bag which made me appreciate how perfectly refined this true German Doppelsticke Alt was even more.

Pours a crystal clear brown mahogany in color w/ ruby highlights w/ a 1/4 finger off white head that quickly leaves medium lacing on the glass and dissipates to a ring. Aromas of deep raisin, caramel, plum, and toffee over top bread, basement must, and German yeast. The taste was of the aroma which translated to rich raisin, plum, caramel and toffee up front leading into a touch of tobacco and mustiness, and closed w/ herbal hop bite and some smoke. Medium bodied and lush, but finished dry and clean like it should. You could literally drink this all day as the alcohol was not even detectable and like a true Alt it does not sit heavy. Might I say this is sessionable despite the higher end ABV.

Well..., the Nazi Panzer tank just rolled over Double Bag like it was a modest pothole! Hail to the authentic German Doppelsticke! This is the second best Doppelsticke Alt I have ever had next to only the mighty Uerige Doppelsticke, the brewery and beer that created the style. Uerige Doppelsticke and this beer are the reason I practice brewing Alts, if I could ever brew one that tasted all the lines of these I would consider myself blessed.

500ml bottle with label indicating "Freigeist Hoppeditz: Doppelsticke Alt". 7.5% ABV

Slightly hazy, dark reddish-brown body is covered by a modest size but quite durable tan head.

Both hops and medium malts appear in the aroma, along with a hint of smoke.

Flavor: strong for a German beer or an alt, with 'extra' malt and hops in good balance. Interesing finish has a moment of swetness then rapidly turns bitter, but only hits a nice mild bitterness that lingers on in the lightly smokey aftertaste.

Excellent medium, smooth and relatively lively body.

Poured from a bottle this alt has a nice white head that has nice tight beaded lacing sitting
atop a reddish brown alt that is hazy and earthy looking. Nose of light charred wood, dark
roasted caramel malts, dark rye bread, and more smoke. Taste is moderately bitter with
rich malts of caramel and rye flavors taking a back seat to subtle smoke and charcoal like
flavors. Very effervescent mouthfeel makes this one very quaffable for being a rather complex
brew with a somewhat coating characteristic. Very nice indeed. Smoke and hops come
through on the aftertaste. Very interesting German outside of the norm.

Impressive large head that settles in a frothy way, leaving plenty of webby lace. The liquid is ruby, dark amber color. Hard to tell, but it appears to be quite clear.

Plenty of caramel with a touch of sweetness. In the background there's a bit of aluminum to the aroma as well.

Not as sweet as the smell suggests, but the hop has a real presence in the swallow. The malt provides some caramel and lighter brown ale notes. Simply put, it's complex, but drinkable. The body is richer than some alts but not noticeably so. The carbonation is quite muted, making the beer quite full. The aftertaste is a good blend of black pepper (hop) and brown bread toast (malt).

Subtly smoked extra hoppy version of a classic "special old ale"

a: Hazy brown color, thick with particulate; poured with a short lived fizzy head.

s: Nutty bread, dark fruit, lots of rich toffee, and a nicely subtle touch of smoke.

t: Rich prunes and toffee are blunted somewhat buy a strong, lightly charred roastiness. The finish is oddly dry with some lingering bitterness.

m: Gently carbonated and maybe a tad thin.

o: The hops at the end were a bit much but this grew on me more and more as I drank it.

Pours like I'd expect from an Alt or Brown Ale-- satisfying brown-red color with a tight knit head. Laced the glass here and there.

Produced a small nose of hops, toasted malt, hints of coffee.

Flavor was a robust potpourri of hops, toasted malt, as with the nose-- hints of coffee, dusted with caramel comingled with hazel nut flavor.

Finish was a mix of hops bitterness and a slight malty sweetness.

Mouthfeel has a certain zest of effervescence and I can't think of a good term-- maybe "light syrup".

Overall I think this is an enjoyable beer and a worthy example of an Altbier or Sticke.

If you run across this one- grab a bottle. If you like beers with a robust flavor stance you won't be disappointed.

The pour produced a brownish red body with a thin yet persistent off-white, creamy head; lacing along the glass. Nutty aroma with hints of musk melon and toasted grains; a smidgen of toffee. Toffee and charred brown sugar flavors; hop bitterness showing up midway through the taste and lingering through the finish. Medium bodied; somewhat bubbly on the tongue.

A nice malt-forward beer featuring a toasted, slightly burnt sugar flavor character. A tad weak in the mouthfeel, a little too fizzy, but nothing major in the grand scheme of things. Well-rounded and relatively light, so knocking back a bottle or two would make for a nice session episode. A very nice German ale.

(had this at Devil's Den, Philly - tender poured about half into a tulip, I poured the rest)

A: leathery, dark copper liquid, quite cloudy (no indication of bottle re-fermentation)... little-to-no head on the initial pour, subsequent attentive refills revealed a tall, gummy-sticky pad of foam that take a notably good while to drop down... moderate lacing

S: like a sweetish-ginger snap without the spices... toasty-nutty, oatmeal-y... mild sort of golden raisin esters in the background... more than a hint of the rich maltiness to come... faint whisper of alcohol... dried grassy hop aromas

T: rich, toasty, biscuit/cookie-like malt flavors, firm thread of dry-crusted caramel... finishes on the cleaner side, pushed on by an attenuated raisin-fig fruitiness... moderate amount of grassy hop flavors peek out from behind the nutty malts, fair but not assertive bitterness

M: medium-bodied, at the least - leans toward full-bodied... bit of a viscous roll midway, though it fades softly in the finish... fairly weighty altogether, tempered only slightly by a delicate glow of booze

O: pretty solid Sticke... would certainly buy another bottle
