They claim this is the less-fruity Rhineland style rather than the typical Bavarian Hefeweizen. It's quite dry with barely a hint of malty sweetness. Faint grainy aroma with some perfumey notes.

Attractive clear light amber color with a luxuriant foam in the Aventinus Weissbier glass. Sediment seems very tight. Bitter murky twang. A touch of woody edge. Bitter aftertaste but not much actual hop flavor.

Quite drinkable but an austere variety of wheat beer. From the 500 ml bottle purchased for $5.69 at Bine & Vine in San Diego.

Picked up at Trappist Provisions during a last minute venture around the block. Poured from a 500ml bottle into a weizen glass. I'm always happy to try any new hefeweizens from Germany.

Pours a different color from the usual offering, with this one instead being a deep copper amber rather than a pale straw tone that is found commonly within the style. Contains a frothy head that never seems to fully dissipate no matter how long I let it sit around, as well as a generous amount of bubbles that are constantly rising to the top. Leaves behind some good lacing. Looks like a combination between a märzen, an altbier, and a hefeweizen if you ask me.

Not much of the classic flavors found in the style seem to make themselves noticeable in the aroma, however. There's immediate notes of caramel and toffee, and... Not much else, if you ask me. Some spices permeate, such as black pepper and light clove. Maybe some vanilla, or perhaps some honey. Caramelized in its flavor, and definitely filled with a bready, cracked wheat flavor that is stronger than usual. Toasted and grainy throughout, without too much of the yeast except for some apple/pear juggling. I'd love to see more banana notes on this, however. Underwhelming.

The flavor continues the bizarre flavor pattern, but at least I can say that it's pretty drinkable, at the very least. Notes of green apple, pears, and extremely light banana first wash the palate, followed by some of the black pepper and clove spices that were found earlier. Caramel is big on this one, as well as a caramelized sugar backbone. Quite bready in texture and flavor, with the wheat and toasted grain profile making up a lot of the flavor at the finish. While it's not very breezy or subtle with its flavors, it makes up for it with the undeniably funky, dry, and lightly smoky flavor that rises with each sip. It is, in a certain respect, appealing with its different flavor profile as well as actual resemblance to richly baked bread. It's at least very creamy and thick overall, and further accentuates the bready nature that it is aiming for. While it's a strange beer, it's worthwhile in the long run.

Talk about a brewery that pretty much breaks all the strictly regulated rules in German brewing - this is a hybrid, and definitely is not a traditional or popularized hefeweizen by any means. While it lacks complexity, it's still very rustic and highly food friendly - I paired this with sausage, a locally made baguette, and some blue cheese with kale to good results. Given the quality of the brewery's portfolio, I definitely expected more at $6, but it's not a bad offering. It will, however, upset those who are die-hard fans of the style as it provides very little with its yeasty profile but at least makes up for it in its peculiar and tasty maltiness.

A - Hazy orange-amber with a finger of frothy off-white head. Fades normal.

S - Sweet wheat and grainy malts, citrus, pine, and floral hops, lager yeast, bit of lemon zest and green fruity esters.

T - Sweet wheat and grainy malts, noble, citrus, pine, and floral hops, some smooth bitterness, some tart fruity esters, lemon zest, with a touch of spices.

M - Medium bodied, moderate carbonation. Smooth with a sweet, bitter, estery finish.

D - Nice hoppy take on a hefeweizen.

A- 500ml bottle poured into a tall, slim glass with a clear light orange body, right between golden and amber. A nice creamy white head forms made up of a ton of really fine bubbles and about two fingers high. Head retention is good and there are a few nice patches of lace down the glass.

S- I really don't get that much, this one is even pretty faint compared to most Hefeweizens. Those important esters and phenols are mostly missing and I just pick up some light caramel, wheat and grains. Tiny citrus and vanilla.

T- The most striking thing about this beer to me is the lack of the banana, clove, ester and phenol dominance. It can be low but is almost non-existent for me and those are certainly the defining characteristics of this style. To me this tastes like a Pale mixed with a Hefe with light caramel, cracked grain, apple, citrus and wheat notes. Feels diluted and just lacking strong flavors.

MF- Light bodied overall consistency with foamy, high carbonation. Tiniest bitterness in the finish but more sweetness.

Really not a huge fan of much here. Nothing offensive but there is more apple/general light fruit here for me than any of the great esters and phenols that characterize this style.

A: Pours a hazy amber with a fair amount of off-white head. The foam reduces to a solid blanket fairly quickly, but the blanket retains well and leaves lots of lacing.

S: A bit of wheat, but with lots of sweet malt and yeast.

T: Mildly sweet and somewhat grainy with a bit of wheat and yeast.

M: Medium creamy body, medium carbonation.

Overall, interesting, and pretty good. It's somewhere between a Belgian pale, a hefeweizen, and a cream ale. A decent hot day session beer.
