A: The beer is a very cloudy yellow, a bright straw color. There is just the slightest thin layer of head as the glass appears in front of me and it's swiftly gone within moment.

S: It smells fruity, sweet and citrussy, with a little spice and a pleasant hint of yeastiness. The smoke scent is subdued, however, and I prepare to be disappointed.

T: The first sips are all citrus. The overwhelming flavor is lemon, but pleasantly so. It reminds me (positively) of a maltier Curious Traveler Shandy. The tartness and the sweetness are well-balanced. While a good beer, I feel a bit cheated, due to the lack of smokiness. As I drink more, however, the sweetness subsides and a more forceful tartness emerges, and then, almost like magic, by the midpoint of my glass, the sour begins to recede altogether and the smoke bursts forth, a delicious woody flavor reminiscent of a good Scotch gradually becomes dominant. I pause, and offer my companions a second taste. They hesitate, having not cared for the initial lemon/tartness, but the look on their faces when they give in was worth the effort -- they can't believe this is the same beer as before. One describes it as simply the most complex beer he's ever tried.

M: This beer is gentle and goes down easily, not very boozy. Despite the lack of head, there's a pleasant fizziness throughout the draft, in both its sour and smoky incarnations.

O: I can't praise this beer enough. The layers of citrus and Scotch are invisible to the eye but somehow coexist in perfect harmony. I'm generally fond of sours but love a good rauchbier and this collaboration is an incredible union of the two. Neither the sour nor the smoke of this particular beer should intimidate anyone, as it really should be able to be appreciated by just about any craft beer aficionado.

It seems that there are no bounds to the breadth of taste combinations that exist in beer form. And here, the taste of smoke and sour battle it out with my tongue and palate being the platform on which this war wages.

Like Berlinerweiss, the beer pours with a seemingly fluorescent yellow hue. Lightly hazed, the beer promptly displays its unadulterated appearance. Capped with fluffed white foam, the beer's head character is resilient and impressively lacy.

Sour first, then smoke, then sour, then smoke. The aromas seem to alternate with each whiff. The combinations of mesquite fired brisket and sharp lime-like sourness create an appetizing, yet odd impression that makes that first sip quite hesitant. With peripheral scents of must, dust, mild horse blanket, pepper, peat, medicine and weathered wood peaking through- the scent is somewhat intimidating.

Flavors focus heavily on that smoky sour interplay and leaves the rest of the complexities to return as echos in aftertaste. But first the beer's bready sweetness layer on the early palate as a mechanism to smooth the transition to a clean lemony-limey middle palate as the sourness wraps around the sides of the tongue. As the flavor turns toward finish, the savory, meaty smoke flavors drive a peppery taste right down the gullet. With low pithy bitterness, the beer relies on the richness of smoke and wheat to balance against the acidity right down to the very end.

Medium-light on the palate, the beer's zesty carbonation accents pepper flavor and feel while keeping the wheat protiens off the tongue and providing a sharp, crisp, and clean mouthfeel. Pepper and alcohol warmth pangs gently on the throat and ushers in a refreshing finish even though the tastes are so polarizing.

Sauer Power, for me is not the best beer for "stand-alone" drinking. It needs food. And with its schizophrenic collection of flavors, it specifically requires entrees like Korean beef kabobs, brisket, kimchi, or vinegar based barbecue.
