Edit: Re-review based on last trip to Sunset 12/15/2008. Tried the food - chicken medallions and pumpkin & sage ravioli - very tasty. Dessert was an egg nog ice cream infused with Southern Tier Creme Brulee. Very solid. Beer selection excellent as always; service was helpful and quicker than last time. Good value for entree (only $10) and for a few hard-to-find taps (Allagash Fedelta, Espresso Oak Aged Yeti). If you do a surgical strike on the tap list you can find both bargains and some stuff that's rare in the area.
Another edit: Updating the atmosphere score. The last couple of times the vibe just hasn't been anything to speak of. Granted, whenever I go it's usually mid-afternoon on a Friday or something but I just feel like it's the beer...and only the beer. The music is usually pretty weak (crappy 1980s stuff) and there's not a lot of charm to be had.
Original text of review 8/19/2008:
Stopped in for a couple of pints after lunch on a lazy weekday afternoon off. Lots of beer paraphernalia all over the place - signs, neon and gobs of bottles. Music playing was a little disjointed - I got "Purple Haze" and "Vogue" maybe 2-3 songs apart. One thing - it was about 2 in the afternoon on a sunny and the place was wicked dahk - I had some dark selections from the tap but they all looked pitch black at first blush.
Beer list reads like a ransom note left on the bottom line of the eye chart - there's a lot going on here.
Quite a bit of quality in bottles and draft - so much to choose from. Prices aren't ridiculous by any means - actually, pretty reasonable for Boston these days.
Service was knowledgeable and helpful, even if not the quickest in the world.

Best beer bar in Boston. Selection both on tap and bottles is amazing. Food has improved and is excellent. Nachos are the best I've ever had. Can't beat the value. Great place for any size party, especially large groups, who can get a table at the last minute. Friendly and knowledgeable staff. It's been a Boston institution for a quarter of a decade, and rightly so. You won't be disappointed.
