Sunday morning brings another look, just one more, no no no, just one more time, at that picture on the back wall of Phil's mom's kitchen before we get underway. There's a Flag Day parade in Brookline, obviously Phil's doing, and the roads are just packed as we run parallel. Every time we want to turn left, it's all police baracades shoooin' us along, and it seems like this is going to be one them, "can't get there from here" kind of deals. Actually, we can get there, we do get there, eventually, it's just at a snail's pace...
Entering past the elevated hostess station (surveying all that is theirs), we moved up a short ramp into the side room where the Colorado Beer Slam was a-happenin'. The room is a big "L" with a seemingly small "L" shaped bar to the rear. Raised bar tables run the length of the inside wall, and low tables sit in the nook along the large front windows and in the area to the rear surrounding the bar. South Western motif colored table tops, leather benches, pale green walls, burgundy trim & high ceiling with fans. A large TV over the entranceway and a small, small TV in the opposite corner. The space was an old bank and they've got the bank counter (with deposit & withdrawl slip slots) and old ATM pieces in tact. The walls above the front seating areas are decorated with 3' X 4' framed coaster displays mounted 2 high, with racks holding tap handles, a dozen each, above them, and mounted beer trays running above to the ceiling. I combed the coaster displays row by row, back and forth and back again, seeing breweries and beers I've never heard of, and remembering some of them long gone (Commonwealth, Elm City, Catamount, Post Road, Miller Reserve, Dock Street). The Grant's Ales coaster with the litle picture of Bert Grant made me weep. He was like a father (of the American brewpub) to me. Beer mirrors, placards and tin signs here and there. Thick paned glass cube window to the rear, neon beer signs in the front windows and old framed bank & loan signs run above the bar tables along the inside brick wall.
For the Colorado Beer Slam, they had 18 taps and 12 bottles from Colorado (Avery, Flying Dog, Great Divide, Left Hand, Rockies, Blue Moon, Red Stone Meadery), and a killer buffet with Denver omelettes, bison burgers, fish tacos, and some other goods. Service was absurdly attentative (yes, more water, thank you).
It appears to be a small bar in that back corner with 3 towers, but when I got there, I realized that there was a massive row of taps running the back wall clear into the next room. 112 taps in all, including the cask ale, not too shabby. Served in a variety of sizes from 2 ounce samplers and 5 ounce flight glasses to pitchers and yard glasses. And well over 300 beers on the beer menu, broken out by style, plus ciders, meads, maltos, NA's, cocktails, beertails, and then some. Great mix of imports and domestic micros. Beer was fresh, no complaints there.
Swinging around into the main room, you find another "L" shaped bar with a few small towers, this one seating a dozen, and roughly 16 tables low & raised. A TV and a shitload of beers displayed on shelves above the bar. Nautical theme (kind of), ships, harpoons, and then Little Rascal, 3 Stooges & Honeymooner prints, license plates, beer trays and matchbook displays. There's another small room downstairs with about a dozen tables.
Not quite sure how this one flew under the radar this long, especially with it's close proximity to Brookline's The Inn at Phil's Mom's House.
