Pours very dark with light foam. First quick taste is smooth with a noticeable dark hint of coffee. The rest of the beer goes down easy, but with less taste and more mouth feel. Hints of chocolate taste , not much of an alcohol taste, but it gives a warm feeling. Probably like a good porter is to be. Certainly to be enjoyed on a summer day.

Enjoyed on tap at the Iron Springs Brewery...

A: Deep brown/red color with nice nitro action. Head was decent, although didn't last too long.

S: Lots of roasted coffee, which overpowers the malt a little too much.

T: Surprisingly flavourful, the coffee isn't as overpowering as the smell suggests. Nicely balanced roasted malt, rather sweet, and a little vanilla to boot.

MF/D: A little thin, but overall I found it rather drinkable. Not sure I'd session it, but a tasty brew, and surprisingly well built for a coffee porter!

Had on tap at Iron Springs Fairfax, CA

A - Opaque black with a creamy tan head. Great lacing.

S - served a little too cold to smell much at all. As it warmed a nice coffee smell came upfront with a bit of roastiness at the end.

T - Sweet Sweet Coffee. Not unbalanced by any means but I would like a little more bitterness.

M - Nice and smooth

D - If this had a little more bitterness it would be amazing. Its just too sweet for me to have more than one or two.

Smell: Strong roasted malts that have a caramelized roundness. A hint of coffee but not as much as expected considering local coffee was added. Quite sweet.

Taste: Smooth and sweet roastiness with a generous amount of caramelized flavors initially. Definite dark chocolate in there. Well balanced sweetness and bitterness in the middle with an appreciable coffee flavor which works well with the full body. A hint of ripe plums round out the middle along with a pleasant earthy flavor and set this beer apart from more average porters. Finish is sweet and oaky.

Had on tap at the brewpub in Fairfax. The beer touts that it is "made with a special blend from Marin Coffee Roasters". Like most of their other beers, this appears to be on rotating release on tap only. This coffee porter pours almost black with a decent offwhite head that lasts for a while and leaves some sticky lacing. The smell is of strong sweet coffee and some roasted grain. The taste is very soft, but there is none of that bitter coffee ground taste you sometimes get in coffee beers. Light coffee bean flavors and a touch of sweet cream plus some more roasted grain. Flavors fall off a bit at the end. Mouthfeel is smooth but a bit thin, but a bit creamy. Not bad at all, but on the light side.

On nitro at the brewery. Poured into a pint glass. Comes in at 6%.

A-Pours an extremely dark brown. Lots of bubbles from the nitro gas cling to the side of the glass. It has a nice one finger sandy head that has some great staying power.

S-Sweet chocolate malt with coffee lying right underneath. There are also some roasty undercurrents.

T-The sweet malt flavor hits first, but it is by no means cloying. The sweetness is detected throughout each sip. There is also some dark chocolate flavor. The coffee kicks in more on the finish. There is also a little citrus zing in between sips.

M-It falls on the upper end of the medium spectrum. Due to the nitro it has a smooth and creamy texture.

D-A really nice coffee porter that perfectly blends the coffee taste with the sweet and roast malts.

This was one of the better nitro beers that I have tried. The flavors were not muted by the nitro and they blended nicely together.

On nitro-tap at Iron Springs on 7/19/09. Beer menu indicated this to be a porter "infused with Marin Roasters coffee".

A - Almost black body with about a finger's width of creamy tan foam that retained most excellently in the form of a half inch cap, evenly distributing lace all around the glass.

S - Prevalent coffee and roasted malt character with hints of chocolate and toasted nuts. Some earthy and herbal hop notes also emerged as the liquid approached room temperature.

T - Chocolate and coffee notes duke it out initially, receiving equal billing in the long run. However, this segues into more of a roasty character with a hint of nutty astringency in the middle. Finishes with a bold, slightly acrid coffee presence and only a hint of sweetness amidst some earthy hop notes.

M - Medium bodied with quite a bit of lively, bristly carbonation on the tongue. Pretty smooth overall, but doesn't strike me as a nitro pour. Finish is moderately astringent with a decent amount of hop bitterness.

D - Really good coffee porter with a big roasty presence, plenty of bitterness and a nutty character that all adds up to a complex little porter.
