Had this on cask at The Lanesplitter in Berkeley.

Pours a dark brownish black with a two-finger tan head that was foamy and very creamy and solid. Dissipated to a one-finger cap that retained for almost the life of the beer. Left spotty average lace.

Nose was of light roasted malt, some weak coffee and a slightly watery smell. Not the best nose, but I enjoyed the soft toasted aroma more than this description indicates.

Taste was a step up with nice bitter-sweet coffee notes and roasted malts. A tiny bit of chocolate to go with soft watery grain added some more to the flavors. It was good, but I have a feeling the cask effect helped it a great deal as well.

Mouthfeel was pretty solid, with a slightly watery feel getting canceled out by a creamy, frothy cask feel that was quite delicious and chewy. Bitterness was soft and nicely balanced with the sweetness present earlier. Drinkability was very good too as it went down easily and was pleasantly carbonated the whole way through. I enjoyed this even if it seems like I didn't.

On cask at the Lanesplitter in Berkeley, served in a shaker pint.

A: Pours a dark brown color with a bit of a reddish tinge around the edges and especially in the light. Two fingers of creamy tan head sit atop the beer, with rather good retention for most of the glass- I almost always had a finger left. Some spotty lacing; nothing to write home about, but at the same time lacing isn't crucial for a good appearance.

S: Great smell here- quite robust, with a decent amount of warm, sweet, roasted malts, and a huge amount of coffee/espresso aromas. Bittersweet chocolate comes out too, along with just a hint of must; quite complex and enjoyable.

T: Doesn't quite live up to the aroma, but there are a lot of good roasted malts and coffee flavors in play here once again. Bittersweet, dark chocolate lingers on the finish. Even if I wasn't blown away by the flavor, it's very well balanced and pleasant enough for the duration of the glass.

M: Smooth and creamy, with a hint of carbonation. This beer goes down easily, even if it doesn't have a number of really notable characteristics controlling things.

O: Good beer, and after this one I'll definitely be looking for more beers from Iron Springs, as well as more beers on cask (this was my first). A very easy drinker, with the comparatively modest (at least by American standards) 6.6% ABV being masked entirely by the rich body and flavor.
