draft at the brewery
a: served in a standard shaker pint, this porter is a deep brown in color, black at the center, with a mocha colored head retained as a full layer
s: heavy roast, coffee, bitter chocolate, dusty char, earthy hops, a nice and heavy porter aroma, good start
m: carbonation moderate-high for the style with a prickly side, body medium-full
t: similar structure as the aroma - heavy on the roast side of the equation with some barley char and note of coffee and bitter chocolate, underlying toffee or burnt sugars, earthy hops impart some leafy flavors and a moderate bitterness
o: a well constructed and nicely balanced porter that certainly leans towards the stoutier side of things, rich and tasty

a pretty darn good porter, from a place I thought I would never find myself. middle of Wyoming might seem like a beer wasteland, but this place was really cool. this particular brew pours a jet black color, no light getting through, with a glassy obsidian shine and about a half an inch of mocha fluff. leaves fine lacing in its tracks. the nose is bitter and a little fusel heavy for a porter, but the malt bill is big and there is a nice roasty richness happening. the flavor has some dark chocolate flavors and a hint of spent coffee grounds. its got a gentle sweetness before the burnt bitterness kicks in. the finish is long and complex, an inviting glass of beer on a windy prairie day alongside a crock of hand made French onion soup. full bodied but not as smooth as it could be from a textural standpoint, and a nitro rig might help this along. still, fine carbonation and a lot more flavor than I expected in a porter from this part of the country. appropriately named, this is a fine glass of ale.

On tap at Bitter Creek Brewery Rock Springs, WY. Pours with a two-finger head, goes slowly leaving a good lace. Deep mahogany color. Chocolate nose. Starts sweet and bitter, good roasted chocolate flavor, smooth finish. $3.75 for 16oz. glass. The ABV 5-6%.
