Generally: I think it can be said that Sixpoint makes IPAs; no matter what they call it, as often as not, you're getting an IPA--what they've done here, in the name of presently occurring seasonal changes, is make a big, brassy IPA with a malt presence that adds--appropriately--spicy, chocolaty notes--some caramel and ripe gourd--that shakes the coming winter's hand, then slaps it on the ass. This beer is slapping me on the ass as I type.
Face in the glass: With nice toasty malts in the background, the hops are shouting for attention--citric notes, and a ton of piney, resinous hop savvy. Typically, this time of year, I go for beers with malt as the leading actor, but this "winter warmer" is making a case for hop forwardness that I really can't argue with. The hops, gorgeous as they are, feel a little like a B actor, common as they are, that gets the Academy Award because of the work of the supporting actors--here, subtle but meaningfully present malt.
With Regard to Taste: The best thing about this beer is the body/mouthfeel; it is lighter and crisper than Autumnation (which I enjoyed but found a bit heavy) and that has a lot to do with the extent to which the malts keep the hops in check. En sum, there are some very pleasing vegetal (think ripe green pepper) notes and even some apple and toffee, to boot.
Epitoma: I must admit that I do not like the new math that equates autumnal/winter beers with increased ABV. There is an argument to be made that Sixpoint is doing just that, BUT, having said that, this is a very fine, very tasty IPA that I would be/will be very pleased to drink whenever given the opportunity. Not the most creative beer I have ever had, but very well made.
