With the backing of oatmeal at its disposal, the usually dry roastiness of big stout is tempered with the adjunct's creamy texture and soothing taste. But also exacerbated by its elevated alcohol, a serious bite has to occur.

Hearty chocolates, deeply roasted coffee and burnt embers all come to mind with aroma and the initial sip. Calmed by hearty toffee, approaching molasses proportions, Barrel Aged Otis greets the palate with roasted walnut, brownie batter and burnt toast.

Gliding across the middle, the taste buds are electrified by the tangy sharpness of char, roasted grape, burnt licorice, tangy merlot and a stinging bite that enlivens the taste much like rye grain. This black beer is no joke!

Trailing dryness further showcases the beer's spicy alohol, roasted acidity, and wood-derived astringency. Taunting tangy sensations close the session as the sweetness fades and the roast takes full command. Yet, the supple softness of oats keeps things faintly creamy until the bitter end.

Well headed with a blanket of mocha-stained foam, the sturdy beer rewards the eye as much as it does the palate, right down to its lasting lacy sips.
