pint sized can into pint glass. best before APR 25 2013.

A: very light brown hue, almost a dark orange. hazy. brownish/white head is frothy, one-finger. retention stands tall, recedes to a rim.

S: chestnuts. apricots. mild toffee. brown sugar. a slightly Belgian dubbel-like aroma in my opinion.

T: fruity, nutty, and sweet. I getting some sort of woody flavor in there as well. something in the middle of the body gives me a salt-like flavor as well. finishes with some lingering sweetness that tries to cloy.

M: I find this body on the lighter side of medium. moderate amount of carbonation.

D: good flavors, but a little muddled in my opinion. these guys have some better brews out there that I would recommend over Brownstone.

Poured into a Pumking glass on 8/15/12

Dulled, yet dense, medium tobacco brown; looks rustic, like old stained wood. A one finger cap of foam doesn't last long, before skimming out to a bubbly, soapy layer. It has the fixin' for good lace, though.

The aroma has the standard Sixpoint green pine. Beyond that are dark malt notes - brown sugar, rye, pumpernickel bread. I'll admit it's a bit of a stretch, but at times it makes me think of oatmeal, cinnamon raisin cookies; it isn't that the beer smells like such a cookie, it just has characteristics that I find similar.

The taste has a good bit of the pine hops going on and there is a stark bitterness that lasts throughout. Stray hints of lemony hops, too. The malts are dry and spicy. Overall, this is pretty well balanced as the bitterness tapers off some. Tangy roast; almost has some hints of coffee.

The feel is a nippy medium light sort of thing. Carbonation is high; not prickly but it's quite effervescent. Coating finish.

Overall, this is one of the more disappointing Sixpoint beers I've had. I doubt I'll finish the can.

I'll start off saying this isn't your traditional brown ale. 16oz can poured into a glass mug. Pours a murky brown, burnt orange haze, nice white head which fades but leaves nice sticky lacing. The aromas are full of chocolate and carmel malts. Lots of orange peel too from the hops. In a nutshell, it smells like an orange dipped in chocolate. The flavors seem to drop off considerably. It tastes like a year old IPA. The flavors do not remind me of a brown ale at all. There's no nuttiness going on with this one. This reminds me of a unique IPA attempt much more than a brown ale. It's really weird. Mouthfeel is nice, thin and nice amount of carbonation. Smooth enough.

Overall, it's not a horrible beer but it's far from what I expect from the style. And it's not memorable reguardless of style.

It's reminicent of Bear Republic/Fat Head's/Stone TBA.. which I wasn't a huge fan of either.

Had this at Il Casale in Belmont, MA, a noisy restaurant with good food and a decent beer list. Mahogany brown, the color of my piano, with some shininess around the edges. Was served with almost no head, so I can't comment on that part of the beer except to growl and say it should have been served with a head, and then go off on my standard tirade about how beer served in pubs and restaurants is usually served without a head and the glass is filled to the FREAKING brim... But I digress.

Very little aroma, but if I pulled hard I could detect a bit of caramel and some smoky beef. Rather thin body, rather thin taste: more caramel and some vanilla, maybe a few raisins. Had a reasonably wet finish, which I like in this style. Went well with a terrific seafood stew. An average brown ale, not great but not bad. You could do worse.

Average finger’s worth of tan foam, moderate dimpling across the surface, disappears steadily but final retention near the surface is very good, not much lacing to speak of. Hazy brown liquid with a strong orange influence, almost looks like rusty water, very active carbonation throughout. The nose does a good job of creating an even spit between sweeter chocolate, toffee crunch, cola bean notes and an earthier, grassier hop presence, almost metallic or minerally at times, nothing here has too much cutting punch to it while also stays firm, maybe could soak in a bit more for added length. Medium-bodied, comes on quickly with carbonated churn in the mouth which likely keeps it drying than otherwise might be. So-so richness to the cocoa, malt, caramel, coffee bean flavors, not a lot of roast but there is decent yeastiness in a dry powder form. Less earthy and minerally here, about same level of herbaceousness with a run up in pine and grapefruit pith. No real fruit flavors. Curiously, sweeter colder than as it warms. Extends the finish well without sacrificing freshness, the bitterness could be ratcheted back.

A: brown and hazy through the restaurant's water glass. 1.5 fingers of tannish head leave strong lace behind.

S: surprisingly hoppy for a brown ale. Some roasted malts in the mix too, but the floral, earthy hops dominate. An interesting and welcome departure.

T: a strong rush of hops and malt greets you upon the first sip. Bitter and dry throughout, finishes with lingering bitterness. Wish it were more malty and less hoppy. Doesn't have enough traditional brown ale base or stray far enough in one direction to warrant the "unique take on the ___ style" moniker.

M: big body and well-carbonated. Works well with what's here.

D: easy to drink, but it suffers the same fate as most American brown ales: it's boring. The addition of hops might seem prudent on paper, but this implementation just doesn't do it for me.
