I enjoyed a pint of this tasty brew at the Blind Tiger Ale House. Pours black without any light shining through. Dark tan head, puffy with good retention. Leaves well developed lacing. This one sports a roasty malt nose. Notes of coffee and toasted grains. Mouthfeel is a bit hollow in the center, not quite the velvet the brewers were going for. Still a nice take on the style, subtle and balanced, worth a try to support this new Brooklyn NY, brewery.

On tap at the Blind Tiger 3/19/05. Dark chocolate brown that you cannot see through at all, with a touch of a dusting and ring of thick, heavy khaki head. Not much coming from the aroma -not very strong, just a bit of coffee, some semi-sweet chocolate, and a tiny bit of hops. Smooth and silky, it flows nice and you really do not feel the carbonation-which I enjoy. A lot of dark coffee and sweet chocolate in the flavor, and a lot of flavor left to linger on the palate. Very nice and very drinkable.

On cask at Rattle n Hum's Cask Anniversary Fest, NYC:

A: Near-black body with a wisp of head.

S/T: Very smokey with a good amount of nuttiness. On the taste, the smokiness takes on a meaty salami quality. Weird, but not ass off-putting as it sounds. The oatmeal quality is noticeable, giving it a bit of a different sweetness and toastiness.

M: Very slick, a bit too flat, but that may have had what to do with the cask being a few days old.

D: Great flavors, but smokiness and the slickness don't mesh well. I look forward to trying this on tap.

Got it on tap at the BTAH in NYC on 4-23-07. . . .

A: A Guinness-like pour from the nitro tap yielded a 1-finger creamy, tan head over a black body. Nice rings of lacing all the way down the glass.

S: Roasted malt, charcoal and smoke are immediately evident.

T: Like the nose -- roasted malt, burnt charcoal and milk chocolate. Finishes with a slightly bitter coffee-like flavor. Flavors aren't particularly strong, however.

M: Pretty smooth and appropriately carbonated. A little bit light in overall heft, however, and I usually find oatmeal stouts to be a little bit creamier.

D: Good. This one went down pretty easily.

Notes: the bartender at BTAH didn't know whether this was a porter or a stout (though she did pour it like you would pour a nitro-tap Guinness, so at some level she must've thought it was a stout or had been trained to pour it thusly). I didn't think it was strong enough to be a porter, so I was guessing at the time that it was an Irish Dry Stout. Knowing now that it was an Oatmeal Stout makes sense, but I usually find that Oatmeal Stouts are a little more creamy. Still, this was not bad at all, and I'd like to try it again knowing now what it is I'd be drinking. . . .

On cask at Rattle 'N' Hum. Average mouthfeel, black with some decent head.Decent choice for cask . Balanced stout, a bit on sweet side but flavourful. Malting makes it a drinkable stout. Nitro would make it more creamy and maybe pump up the rating some.

I had this on Nitro tap at T Brendan O'Reilly's in Harrisburg. Served in a tulip pint.

A - The color has a moderate cascade from deep brown at the base of the glass to medium brown topped with a thick 1 inch band of nitro whipped light beige. The clarity is opaque and the head holds moderately well

S - The smell is a mix of deep roasted and caramel malts. The nose has a light sweet aroma similar to toffee with a mild char element.

M - the feel is good, but I feel the Nitro strips it of some of its body drying it slightly, but that isn't to say it lacks sweetness it has roasted character and mild spice and bitterness while the feel is dry as it finished

T - the flavor is good with mild caramel and sweetened coffee flavors and the slight piney bitterness from the hops lets the stout avoid being too sweet. The malt has a mild bitterness from the dark roasted grain and includes a light char effect in the flavor with toffee and dark toasted bread comes to mind

D - I was satisfied with this, but it is not my first choice in oatmeal stouts. I found the bitterness to be slightly high in hops and malt putting it slightly out of balance. The nitro treatment doesn't help IMO but I would order it again if on C02 to compare

Sixpoint Otis, oatmeal stout -nitro

Pint @ rattle-n-hum

A: black with a centimeter velvety head. Nice lacing on glass. Bubbles all long inside glass.

S: roasted malt charcter, some toffee/caramel.

T: smooth character, full bodied stout, enjoy the roasty coffe flavors, decent flavor profile, things seem to balance each other out and nothing is fighting for 1st.

M: smooth full bodied, nice carbonation, plenty but not too much. Makes it fun in mouth.

D: extremely smooth and drinkable. I'd have another if I wasn't meeting my boss later.

Growler fill from WF Bowery beer room. I feel like I should branch out but they are so close, have good prices, and good rotations.

A- Pours pitch black with a thick creamy mocha head that looks like a nitro pour with the bubbles looking like they are falling down the beer like a guiness, looks cool. The fine bubbled foamy head is retained for a long time. There is alot of fine creamy lacing on the glass. Eventually a thin creamy cap remains. When held up to the light you can see some fresh motor oil brown edges.

S- Heavy/dark biscuity maltiness. A very light cocoa and a whiff of etoh. Not too exciting.

T- A woody malty mix right up front, the blends into bitter hops & bitter roasted coffee. The bitter lingers til the end. There is a subtle liquid smoke flavor in there too. A nutty after flavor.

M- Fuul, smooth, creamy with a slight slickness on the tongue. Like a meal here.

D- The flavor is good- bitter, woody....but the mouthfeel is great- full smooth and creamy. Yet another very enjoyable offering from Sixpoint.

A: The beer is essentially jet black in color (only traces of amber are visible near the edge of the glass when it is held up to the light). It poured with a finger and a half high creamy beige head that has excellent retention properties; it slowly died down but consistently left a thin head covering the surface.
S: There are light aromas of roasted malts in the nose.
T: The taste is well balanced and has flavors of coffee beans, toasted oats and roasted malts. There is a slight amount of bitterness in the finish.
M: It feels medium-bodied, smooth and creamy on the palate with a moderate to high amount of carbonation. There is some dryness in the finish.
D: The beer is rather easy to drink and is quite sessionable for the style because it isn't very heavy.

Had this beer on tap at The Publick House in Brookline 2/11
This beer pours a black, opaque color with a finger of thick off-white head - very good head retention. Lacing is thick and sticky and present for entire sitting. The nose quite muted however there is scents of fruity hops and caramel roated malts, some slight undertones of chocolate. The taste was made up for the lack of aroma. Coffee, chocolate and a bit of a nutty flavor are the most present. Roasted malts and slight hops are also present. The beer is full bodied and creamy but not overwhelmingly filling, very smooth going down. Tonight was my first experience with Sixpoint and both samples are impressive!

A- nitro-pour into a pint glass. milk chocolate head about two fingers worth. Nice lace. Sticky.

S- very soft aroma, light chocolate, light roast, light cream, very subtle.

T- again, it is a delicate tasting stout. Small flavors like the nose, a milky sweet aftertaste. Hops hit at the end too. It's unbelievably creamy thanks to the nitro.

O- Nothing mind blowing but I got to say, despite its mellowness, I'm actually really digging this.

Appearance: black in color with a 1" tan colored that slowly fell to a thick surface foam. Some nice lacing developed.

Smell: roasted malts and some chocolate tones are mild but pleasant.

Taste: roasted malt with some softer chocolate, coffee, and oats. Bitterness is mild.

Mouthfeel: medium bodied beer. Lightly crisp to start, smooth and light dry late. There is some softer creaminess to this beer too. Aftertaste is relatively short.

Drinkability: easy to quaff this stout and a few of these can be had in a single session. Nice balanced flavors makes this an enjoyable version.

My first cask growler--let's see how it goes. Poured into an American pint glass.

A--Pitch black with no head, just a few bubbles like you'd get from water if you got it too fast from the faucet. Looks like a glass of black coffee sitting there, which takes some getting used to...

S--Smells like coffee, too, and that's not just because I'm mentally primed for it. There's also some sweet smoke and even slight, slight hops.

T--Sturdy, sturdy stout--my goodness does the black malt hit you. There's also considerable hops here, as the roof my mouth is positively singing from parched out roasted flavors. As far as flavor goes, plenty of pipe tobacco, followed by bittersweet chocolate, a bit more coffee (though less than the nose), and as you travel back a bittering dry hops. Smooth, balanced construction, but where's the oatmeal? Lacking seriously in that department, and while I never expect traditional from Sixpoint--the hops presence here, for example--they should at least /sort of/ reflect the style.

M--This might be the best part of the beer, and the real ale component only boosts it. Super creamy and rich, a thick without being heavy feel that's almost pitch perfect stout.

D--What's the ABV, like six percent? Hell yeah I'll have another! The smoothness of the mouthfeel and the dry back end of this brew make it easily sessionable, especially in December about-to-snow temperatures.

On tap at Craft Ale House.

Appears a murky dark brown with a cascading tan head that quickly leads to a fluffy cap. Plenty of scattered lacing is left around the glass.
Smell is of roasted nuts, toffee, molasses, brown sugar, coffee, citrusy hops, and cocoa.
Taste is of the mentioned aromas with more of a chocolate covered toffee flavor coming through.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied, gritty, chewy, nicely balanced between sweet maltiness, and bitter hops.

Poured a deep brown color with an averaged sized off white head. Aromas of roast, oats, roastiness, and chocolate. Tastes of the same oats, chocoalte, roastiness, coffee, and caramel.

A - Dark, nearly black/brown in color. Poured with no head at all (poor service, and not a reflection of the brew)

S - Some malty sweetness, and roasted characteristics. Nothing that really stuck out as an oatmeal stout, but stout nonetheless

T - Definitely sweeter on the malts, and the oat flavors come through. Roasted rather than smokey. Some hop dryness toward the end

M - Medium MF, and closing in on a more viscous nature.

D - Pretty drinkable for the style, and the sample was easily quaffable.

Overall, this was not an overly complex take on the style. However, it was a solid take IMO. I would recommend it, but not above a few other brews in the category.

On tap at Rattle N Hum, poured into an imperial pint glass. Deep dark almost black hue with purple on the edges capped by a creamy off white head with excellent retention. Nose is light with hint of roastiness. Taste is full of roast malt, light flower balances nicely. Mouth is light and creamy. Yeah!

Black color with a beige thick head with good retention.
Aroma of toasted grains and citric hops.
Flavor of roasted malts, chocolate and a good deal of hops. Notes of caramel and pine. Dry and bitter aftertaste with a long lasting residual roastness.
Very smooth body with a mild carbonation.
Very good stout, nice tweak on the hop addition.

Pours a black color with a huge pillowy toasted khaki colored head that just didn't want to settle. Beauty.

The aroma is quite hoppy. Nice blend of floral and grassy hops. The mellow oatmeal malt lets the hops showcase themselves.

The flavor is a good mix of roast and hops. There is a light roast and smooth nature to the oatmeal malt. Perhaps a hint of coffee. The hopo profile is quite fresh and grassy also brings a touch of lime.

The feel is light for a stout and it has light carbonation which lead to bit of a lackluster feel. Roast and hop bitterness in the finish.

A nice hoppy stout. The hops dominate over the malt in this one.

Brief review from notes a little while back. Served on tap at some bar in Billyburg.

A: Poured a deep space black, with a small tan head. The head recedes into a patchy cap and leaves some lacing.

S: Pretty sweet and a little roasted. Some chocolate in there. Nothing special, but pretty good.

T/M: Pretty nice. A definite toasted oat taste, complimented by chocolate malt. A little sweet for everyday drinking. This is one of the smoothest stouts I've ever had. It goes down like silk. It's plenty thick and has low but active carbonation.

D: Another solid dark offering from Sixpoint. It won't blow you away, but it's damn solid.

On-tap at Rattle-n-Hum in NYC.

Pours black with a one-finger, frothy off-white head. The head recedes into a thin layer on top leaving decent lacing.

Smells of lightly roasted malts with a good deal of sweetness from the oats. As the beer warms mild dark chocolate aromas waft out.

Tastes similar to how it smells. Smooth roasted malt flavors up front sweeten midway through the sip. Hints of dark chocolate and lighter hints of coffee also enter into things and carry through to a mildly bitter ending.

Mouthfeel is good. It's got a nice thickness with soft carbonation.

Drinkability is good. I didn't have a problem finishing my glass and could have another.

Overall this was a smooth oatmeal stout however I would have preferred to try it on a normal tap rather than the nitrous. That being said, either way it's served it's worth a shot.

On nitro-tap @ the Devil's Den (Philadelphia, PA) on 5/1/10. Served in a pint glass.

Pours black, with a finger of rich mocha head. This stays thick and foamy from the nitro-pour, leaving heavy froth all down the sides of the glass. The aroma smells of chocolate roast, flaked oats, and some green citric tones. I'm getting some nice smoky textures coming out of those roasted notes. Nice full feel in the nose here.

The sweetness of the taste is very smooth in the mouth, with chocolate, caramel, and oatmeal all showing themselves. This is well balanced by a pervasive roasty nature and some spicy hops in the back of the profile. There's a good bit of dry roast and bitterness that drives the finish. The mouthfeel is medium bodied, with a smooth and creamy feel. There is just a touch of sharpness to the carbonation but this drinks absolutely great here on nitro.

There's nothing to complain about here. This is just a solid Oatmeal Stout with plenty of flavor and a super silky feel that helped along a good bit by the nitro. I could have easily downed a couple of these. Very sessionable overall.

A - Served with a black body that showcased a two finger, tan head...the head slowly crept to a solid one finger cap...chunks of lacing were left behind

S - A nice roast presence was coming across giving off coffee and chocolate hints...the nitro softened the nose a bit, but the aromas could still be picked out

T - All of the components play well together...the chocolate flavors come across as sweet, milk chocolate but also leave hints of roasted, dark chocolate...the rolled oats smooth things out, while the sweet caramel adds the sweet level...there is a faint hop presence at the end that ties everything together

M - Medium bodied...smooth, slightly creamy, coats the palate

O - This Oatmeal Stout took nicely to the nitro...all the classic flavors were present and represented nicely...a solid Oatmeal Stout

On-tap at the Spinnerstown Hotel. Served in a tulip glass, this beer appeared pitch black with a very short head. I really thought this was a great, albeit aggressive, take on the style. The flavor and aroma are full of big chocolate flavors up front with roasted barley around the edge. The malts are followed by a powerful citrus hops kick that provides a great bitter contrast to the cocoa notes. This is easily one of the best oatmeal stouts I've ever had.

On nitro-tap 10/28/2011 at Track 84 in Warwick, RI, served in a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a dark brown color, with a large dense beige head that fades very slowly and leaves a very thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma is faint but contains roasted malts, oats, milk chocolate, coffee, some dark fruit and vanilla.

T: The taste starts out with a hearty roasted malt character followed by creamy flavors of oats, milk chocolate and vanilla. The hops presence is decent for the style and provides a good balance. The after-taste is slightly sweet.

M: Crisp and very smooth, medium body, light-to-medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

D: Tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, decent kick, good representation of style, this is a good flavorful stout to drink for a while.
