I had a sixteen ounce glass of this recently at on of my local pubs. I enjoyed it but wasn't blown away. It was before noon, it was oatmeal stout, so I kinda felt that I had no choice but to have it.

The color is very dark with a slightly red hue. Carbonation was a little low but was also very dark.

Aroma was somewhat weak but nice. Roasty, toasty with some general malt aroma as well.

Flavor was good, not great. Again, a little light.

Overall a very easy to drink beer, just not so interesting.

On nitro-tap at Brass Rail Deli on 9/3/09.

A - Dark earthy brown body with a tint of mahogany around the edges and a slim but creamy tan head that reduced to just a sliver but deposited tons of cake-like lacing around the glass.

S - Opens with an abundance of toasted oat character with hints of cocoa and fresh roasted coffee. A subtle waft of alcohol and a touch of licorice also emerge as the liquid warmed up a bit.

T - Initital flavor blends toasted oats and grainy malts with a semi-sweet chocolate character and a hint of coffee. There is also a bit of tar and smokey notes in the backend, but very faint overall. Finishes with an aggressive earthy, leafy hop bite and a slight metallic tinge.

M - Medium bodied with an oily but thin texture, yet the brew maintains its smoothness overall. Mouthfeel is a bit on the sticky side. Finishes with a good deal of bitterness and mild astringency on the palate.

D - Pretty solid oatmeal stout with quite a bit of hop character, especially for the style.

Poured absolutely pitch black with a massive off-white 'cascade effect' head from the nitro tap. Some light penetration along the sides at the bottom of the glass. Good head retention.
Aroma is a nice blend of malt, bready yeast, flaked oats, sweet chocolate with hints of roasted coffee. The aroma became so much better as the beer warmed up.
The taste upfront is slightly sweet, with hints of bitterness becoming evident in the middle. The finish is a nice balance of sweet and bitter and is almost dry. The bitterness lingers just a little longer than the sweetness in the finish.
Almost full bodied and coats the palate really well. There was just that hint of sharpness on the palate, which I am assuming is due to the nitrogen. Makes me wonder how much more silkier and full bodied it would be if I had a regular version of this stout.
Left a ton of lacing all the way down to the bottom of the glass. Good mouthfeel and is very easy to drink. I can easily see myself have more than a couple of these in a sitting.
Definitely a winner from Sixpoint, and is highly recommended.

Got it on tap at the BTAH in NYC on 4-23-07. . . .

A: A Guinness-like pour from the nitro tap yielded a 1-finger creamy, tan head over a black body. Nice rings of lacing all the way down the glass.

S: Roasted malt, charcoal and smoke are immediately evident.

T: Like the nose -- roasted malt, burnt charcoal and milk chocolate. Finishes with a slightly bitter coffee-like flavor. Flavors aren't particularly strong, however.

M: Pretty smooth and appropriately carbonated. A little bit light in overall heft, however, and I usually find oatmeal stouts to be a little bit creamier.

D: Good. This one went down pretty easily.

Notes: the bartender at BTAH didn't know whether this was a porter or a stout (though she did pour it like you would pour a nitro-tap Guinness, so at some level she must've thought it was a stout or had been trained to pour it thusly). I didn't think it was strong enough to be a porter, so I was guessing at the time that it was an Irish Dry Stout. Knowing now that it was an Oatmeal Stout makes sense, but I usually find that Oatmeal Stouts are a little more creamy. Still, this was not bad at all, and I'd like to try it again knowing now what it is I'd be drinking. . . .

On tap at Teresa's Next Door

A-Pours a very deep, opaque brown, with no lihgt getting thorough at all. A fluffy tan head with nice lacing.

S-Lots of roasted malt, heavy coffee aroma and some dark chocolate.

T-Roasted malt and caramle in the front, then some sweet oats followed by a mild bittersweet chocolate, finishing with roasted coffee.

M-Medium bodied with a nice silkiness.

D-Very drinkable. I would enjoy a second.

Had this beer on tap at The Publick House in Brookline 2/11
This beer pours a black, opaque color with a finger of thick off-white head - very good head retention. Lacing is thick and sticky and present for entire sitting. The nose quite muted however there is scents of fruity hops and caramel roated malts, some slight undertones of chocolate. The taste was made up for the lack of aroma. Coffee, chocolate and a bit of a nutty flavor are the most present. Roasted malts and slight hops are also present. The beer is full bodied and creamy but not overwhelmingly filling, very smooth going down. Tonight was my first experience with Sixpoint and both samples are impressive!

This brew was served from the tap at Rattle N’ Hum in New York, NY. It arrived in a Rogue pint glass, showing a jet black brew, with flecks of ruby throughout when held to the light. This beer looked syrupy. It held a one finger head of medium brown bubbles, leaving sticky, spidery lacing after retaining nicely. Carbonation appeared average, and no haze or sediment was noted. The aroma opened with mustiness, grainy sourness, grassy hops, and chocolatey char and smoke. Light vinegar came out with warmth, along with a steely vanilla vine and raw coffee bean. Our first impression was that the flavoring was pretty mild, but the smoky malt base was nice. As we sipped, bitter roasted grain, sour lactics, light molasses, and huge smoke started things off. The middle peaked with smokiness, and a bittering bite of roasty grain. We finished with grassy hops and sour grain, while the smoky, chalky, drying chocolate malts and molasses continued from before. The aftertaste breathed of drying grain, more earthy hops, and a charred/smoky meat or fish character. The body was medium to full, and the carbonation was lower. Bone dry astringency streaked along the mouth, followed by a light smoke and coating booze to cut the dryness. There was a significant warming feel, more and more with each sip. The abv was appropriate, and the beer drank easily.

Overall, what we enjoyed most about this brew was the nice coloring, and thick smoke to the malts. Negatively, however, the nose was a little light, and the flavoring, other than that wild smoke, was too. We were hoping for a better balance, and more solid flavors to mix with such a strong component as the smoke.

On cask @ D.B.A. Greenpoint

Pours a dark brown almost black, with a small white creamy head that fades fast. Aroma was of roasted coffee/smoke with a chocolate finish. Taste was nutty, roasted coffee, smokey and some malts. Mouthfeel with creamy and smooth. A very well balanced beer, another winner from Sixpoint, i can't get enough of their stuff

On nitro-tap at Prime 16. Pours a pitch black color with over an inch of frothy, tan head. Some lacing. Aroma is a sweet chocolate and coffee mix with some smokey roasted malts. The taste has more of the sweet oatmeal than in the aroma. Light and sweet coffee as well as chocolate. A bit of smoke towards the finish. Silky, creamy mouthfeel thanks to the nitro. Damn drinkable. This beer really shines on the nitro tap. Overall, worth seeking out.

A: black, tons of thick khaki head. Nitro pour yields the best head consistency and overall viscosity. Huge, thick rings of tan lace. Gorgeous!

S: unexpectedly hoppy in the nose. Chocolate malts are there but hard to pick up. Any hints of other aromas are far too faint to perceive.

T: dark and roasty malts greet you first, then a creamy milky sweetness takes over before the hops bring it home for a dry finish. Surprisingly hoppy for a stout, but it works.

M: nitro + stout = perfection. Huge, silky body with a 100% chance of creaminess. Bliss!

O: a solid stout with a unique twist. I'll say it again: *all* stouts should be served on nitro. Props to Spitzer's for having 3 nitro taps!

"Otis" was on tap at Capone's around 4/25/2009, but I decided to take this Sixpoint home with me in a growler. I decided to pour all of the servings into a small 9 oz. Great Lakes Snifter.

The color of "Otis" can be deceiving at first. When I first laid my eyes upon it, it looked to be an ink black color. When I held it into the light, I found out that it was more of a murky dark mahogany brown color than a black color. Sitting on top of this dark brown brew was a minimal tan colored head of foam. This small head of foam had pretty good retention that left behind a string of foamy tan rings and a few blots of lace around the glass.

The aroma of this beer was lightly roasted with the scent of roasted walnuts, a hint of roasted malts, a gentle whiff of roasted coffee, a touch of chocolate, and then this roasted aroma finishes up with some floral hops.

While the aroma was roasted, the taste was more dry. The taste was still roasted, but to me it was more dry than anything else. The taste of this Oatmeal Stout contained dry roasted malts, oatmeal flakes, a touch of dry roasted coffee beans, a spatter of yeast, and a few dry roasted nuts at the end.

The mouthfeel was light to medium bodied with a dry aftertaste of roasted malts, coffee beans, roasted nuts, and a drop of yeast.

It wasn't a bad Oatmeal Stout, but "Otis" didn't really do anything for me. It would have been better for me if it was more roasted than dry or have the dryness level match up with the roasted level. I would more than likely pass this Sixpoint up if I ever saw it again. If you've never had, it's worth a shot at least once.

A - Served with a black body that showcased a two finger, tan head...the head slowly crept to a solid one finger cap...chunks of lacing were left behind

S - A nice roast presence was coming across giving off coffee and chocolate hints...the nitro softened the nose a bit, but the aromas could still be picked out

T - All of the components play well together...the chocolate flavors come across as sweet, milk chocolate but also leave hints of roasted, dark chocolate...the rolled oats smooth things out, while the sweet caramel adds the sweet level...there is a faint hop presence at the end that ties everything together

M - Medium bodied...smooth, slightly creamy, coats the palate

O - This Oatmeal Stout took nicely to the nitro...all the classic flavors were present and represented nicely...a solid Oatmeal Stout

on tap at Blind Tiger

A- nitro-pour into a pint glass. milk chocolate head about two fingers worth. Nice lace. Sticky.

S- very soft aroma, light chocolate, light roast, light cream, very subtle.

T- again, it is a delicate tasting stout. Small flavors like the nose, a milky sweet aftertaste. Hops hit at the end too. It's unbelievably creamy thanks to the nitro.

O- Nothing mind blowing but I got to say, despite its mellowness, I'm actually really digging this.

A_Pours a dark brown with a smallish tan head. There are various bubbles that cling to the inside of the brew.

S_Mild roasted aroma with a good chocolate component to it.

T_the same roasted malt and chocolate come forward in the flavour profile. Nicely bitter in the front and the back with a fair dose of sweetness in the middle to accentuate the chocolate aspects.

M_A bit too thin for an oatmeal stout and lacking that silkiness needed in the style.

D_A decent but not great Oatmeal stout.

Review taken from notes.

This beer pours a very dark brown color, almost black. It has a nice finger of creamy tan head on it. The head has good retention, and it leaves behind some scattered lace on the glass. The nose is of dark roasted malt, chocolate, toffee, light hops, and cream. It smells really nice. The taste follows the nose pretty well. There is a nice roasted malt flavor and bitterness. There are some flavors of coffee, dark chocolate, toffee, and mild hop flavors. The finish leaves some lingering roasted malt and hop bitterness on the palate. This has a medium body, that is leaning toward full, and good carbonation. It goes down smooth, and it has a really creamy feel to it. There is some sweetness and a nice roasted malt bitterness that balances it out. The roasted bitterness lingerings on the tongue for a bit. This has good drinkability. It has really nice flavor and great feel to it. It is quite creamy. Overall, I really enjoyed this beer, and I would buy it again. I recommend trying it out if you come across it. Cheers.

Deep dark brown, thick tan head with decent retention and fair lacing. Found both the aroma and flavor on this one to be a little more skewed to sweet chocolate and coffee than the Diesel Stout by Sixpoint, but still had an overwhelming amount of toastiness and dry grass finish. The body also was very very thin for a stout, but a tiny bit thicker than the Diesel.

Pours a cloudy brown. Topped by a thick, brown head that fades to a persistent quarter-inch layer, and leaves sheets of lace. The aroma is strong and sharp initially, an unexpected nosefull of resiny hops. Underneath a roasty, chocolate character appears.

Roasty upfront. Fruity in the center: chocolate, dates, and other dark fruit. The coffee notes in the finish build to a strong hop bitterness. Thick with the nitro-tap smoothness, which honestly, I'm not a fan of. I think it makes beers feel thin no matter how full-bodied they may be.

A good oatmeal stout with an unexpected dose of hops.

On cask at New Beer today. Having my way with a jug of it at the moment.

Filled completely to the top, I go easy into my rounded pint glass.

Black & brown & very still. Head was small to begin with at the store, got about a third of quickly dispersing dark tan head.

Sniffing along... sweet roast, woody-ness, baking flour, a bit of a citric tone right at the end.

First off, just a trace of carbonation left after getting filled barely four hours ago. Though it adds to the already smooth creaminess that the oatmeal provides.

Taste is milder in coffee/roast flavors then it was fresh out the cask. A delicate bready/sugar cookie sweetness relaxes things, waiting on the slightly lingering citrus/coffee-ish/tinny bitterness that comes into the finish. Simple & delicious.

Drinkability is just plain easy. Easier then Brownstone on cask. This "IS" cask though. I am only allowed so much of that.

How about running this stuff through a randal stuffed with toasted marshmallows?

A - Dark, nearly black/brown in color. Poured with no head at all (poor service, and not a reflection of the brew)

S - Some malty sweetness, and roasted characteristics. Nothing that really stuck out as an oatmeal stout, but stout nonetheless

T - Definitely sweeter on the malts, and the oat flavors come through. Roasted rather than smokey. Some hop dryness toward the end

M - Medium MF, and closing in on a more viscous nature.

D - Pretty drinkable for the style, and the sample was easily quaffable.

Overall, this was not an overly complex take on the style. However, it was a solid take IMO. I would recommend it, but not above a few other brews in the category.

Had this beer on tap at Bobbique's in Patchogue NY. It pours a black, opaque color with a thin off-white head and good lacing. The aroma is of fruity hops and caramel roated malts.

The taste was mostly dominated by hop character, with the oatmeal roasty/sugary flavor playing second fiddle. To be honest, the hops dominated the flavor a bit too much for my liking. Notes of coffee and chocolate are present, but barely. Mouthfeel is full and creamy, and the beer is quite drinkable. Overall the beer is a quality brew from a quality brewhouse, but it doesn't keep within the style very well. I would have liked to see more oatmeal charcater in the flavor. Still, it's worth a try.

On tap at Rattle N Hum, poured into an imperial pint glass. Deep dark almost black hue with purple on the edges capped by a creamy off white head with excellent retention. Nose is light with hint of roastiness. Taste is full of roast malt, light flower balances nicely. Mouth is light and creamy. Yeah!

The beer looks silky smooth and dark with a nice head that is retained through the session.

This beer smells extremely hoppy for an oatmeal stout. The smell of malt is mostly masked by the hops.

The taste is hoppy as well, not expected in this style and it actually doesn't work so well.

Its hard to pick up the quality of the malt and expected easy drinking oat goodness as the hops prevent the true quality of this beer from coming through.

I am not able to get past the fact that this beer is way over hopped for the style. As I stated above, I can see there is a a good beer in here, brewed with quality ingredients, but the hops are hiding most of what I am looking for.

10oz straight from a firkin

A-pitch black, a few ruby highlights on the edges. Small tan head.

S- roasted malts, cocoa, oatmeal, and Sixpoint yeast.

T- cocoa, French roast coffee, a bit of black licorice, brown sugar and oatmeal.

M- medium to full bodied, a bit slick and creamy from the oatmeal. Dry on the finish, which I don't really dig all that much.

O- it's Sixpoint, so it's quite good, but I'll still take Diesel.

Growler fill from WF Bowery beer room. I feel like I should branch out but they are so close, have good prices, and good rotations.

A- Pours pitch black with a thick creamy mocha head that looks like a nitro pour with the bubbles looking like they are falling down the beer like a guiness, looks cool. The fine bubbled foamy head is retained for a long time. There is alot of fine creamy lacing on the glass. Eventually a thin creamy cap remains. When held up to the light you can see some fresh motor oil brown edges.

S- Heavy/dark biscuity maltiness. A very light cocoa and a whiff of etoh. Not too exciting.

T- A woody malty mix right up front, the blends into bitter hops & bitter roasted coffee. The bitter lingers til the end. There is a subtle liquid smoke flavor in there too. A nutty after flavor.

M- Fuul, smooth, creamy with a slight slickness on the tongue. Like a meal here.

D- The flavor is good- bitter, woody....but the mouthfeel is great- full smooth and creamy. Yet another very enjoyable offering from Sixpoint.

Brief review from notes a little while back. Served on tap at some bar in Billyburg.

A: Poured a deep space black, with a small tan head. The head recedes into a patchy cap and leaves some lacing.

S: Pretty sweet and a little roasted. Some chocolate in there. Nothing special, but pretty good.

T/M: Pretty nice. A definite toasted oat taste, complimented by chocolate malt. A little sweet for everyday drinking. This is one of the smoothest stouts I've ever had. It goes down like silk. It's plenty thick and has low but active carbonation.

D: Another solid dark offering from Sixpoint. It won't blow you away, but it's damn solid.
