A - It's hard to catch a whiff from a beer when the darn head wont collapse! This seemingly ever-lasting cap of dense tan foam takes an eternity to plateau, disintegrating away from the edges while leaving immovable, chunky lace above the midnight chocolate brown beer.
S - Robust and forthcoming, Diesel has a powerful aroma of roasted malts and American hops starting with dark chocolate-covered raisin and chocolate-covered coffee bean while trailing off with sharp snap of pine needle and sticky lupulin resin. A wonderful aroma, however hop-forward.
T - Hops overwhelm the malts leading me to question whether I would truly consider this a hoppy stout or go straight to American Black Ale. A waft of smoke settles around notes of burnt toast and dry cocoa with an overarching earthiness of pine cone and pine needle derived from American hops. It's actually rather simple and straight forward!
M - Dry roasted malt provides a gritty background but the beer's medium body has a smooth overall texture that finishes dry and bitter thanks to the plethora of hops. The lack of fullness and focus on hop bitterness further suggests American Black Ale.
O - With each passing sip, I continue to enjoy Diesel but become quickly convinced I'd be hard pressed to try and pass this black hoppy beer off as a stout to any of my stout-loving friends. It's a great beer packed with roasted malt and pine-y American hops but the focus strays from the malt, which merely provides a backbone, to those bold hop additions.
