Aroma: Blistering citric hop aroma up front. Notes of orange pith and lemon zest overwhelm the experience. Background chocolate and cocoa notes appear as the beer warms and is agitated.
Appearance: Black center with leather brown edging. Huge rocky and sudsy tan cap. Head retains well.
Flavor: Earthy and slightly citrus hop flavors up front. Background cocoa notes with a touch of milky sweetness. Balance is clearly to the American hop bitterness. Finish is clean, crisp, and dry.
Mouthfeel: Medium-light bodied with high carbonation. A touch of roasted grain astringency. No alcohol heat.
Overall impression: Nowhere near the complexity, mouthfeel, or malt profile to be a stout. More aligned with a Black IPA. A good beer but not an American Stout by any parameters.
