Had this alongside a killer burger on vacation in NYC. I'm sure environment/context played a part...late summer evening, tired legs from long walks, that killer burger to sate gnawing hunger...even still, this brew was delightful all its own, offering loads of spicy rye, in concert with resinous hops, to satisfy and delight. Great prickly carbonation that only enhanced the refreshing nature of the brew. Great stuff.

This was a delicious brew. Malty Caramel up front with a nice hop bite on the end. A masterfully crafted beer. Very well rounded, very drinkable, but very complex. Absolutely brilliant.

Gorgeous amber hue with the richest and stickiest head I ever did see. Great spicy and bready aromas with some nice resinous notes as well. Flavor is spot on, like drinking a loaf of rye bread. Toasty hearty grain notes, spicy finish, long lasting bitterness. One of the richest and thickest bodies I've ever experienced, takes away from drinkability a little but an incredible beer none the less.

Trying to widen the styles I'm trying, or my taste buds will shrivel at all the IPAs/DIPAs I've been trying lately.

Very earthy, carmel-ly, with just a slight citrus flavor. Not very sweet, which is nice. A nice winter beer, for all the winter beer fans. And the Rye malt is really interesting.

Just cant see this being a style I'd ever consider "go-to", but I think Sixpoint does a fine job here.

Pours a cloudy copper/amber/reddish color with a big thick creamy 2 finger tan head that was full of bigger sized bubbles and faded very slowly, leaving good spotty lacing/rings and a layer on top.

Smells of floral hops, rye, dry grass, grains, some light caramel and earthy notes like dried hay or wheat. There’s a slight fruity sweetness mixed in the nose, but the grains and rye seem to come on the strongest.

The dry hopping noted on the can comes through as the flavor is more hoppy with floral and citrus hops starting this out, mixed with leafy herbal notes, caramel, toasted grains, graham cracker, grapefruit, woody or nutty notes, and then a bitterness mixed with the spicy rye and other hoppy spices like pepper. The aftertaste is like a piece of rye bread dipped in an IPA, and it’s on the dry side with a residual floral hop sweetness. The rye sticks around after the swallow and seems to dry out my mouth.

Mouthfeel is on the smoother side, with a medium body, average carbonation and a slightly bitter finish that trails off and leaves you guessed it, rye. I like this beer and have been drinking it for years. It is always good if you enjoy mixing it up and the flavor of rye, plus the can keeps the hops and rye fresh and mildly spicy. One of the top rye ales made.

From out dated can. No loss as far as I can tell. The appearence, aroma & taste have not suffered. The head was maintained throughout. It was lively on the tongue & there was no telltale "skunking in the brew. Toasted malt is what comes through under the nose & is solidified (or liquified) on the tongue to a very pleasent end. The labeling laudes rye as the star but I beg to differ. The brewers are first rate & withot their deft touch this could never have happened. I'm a traditionalist & this has opened up a new path for me. In the long run the flavor tires the taste buds, so perhaps a smaller can may beneifit the consumer, but don't let that stop you. Chill it, open it & enjoy it.

Poured this beer from the 16oz can. It has a light brown color body with a thick head. The aroma is spicy of rye and with a slight hop aroma. The taste has a rye forward flavor with a pine hop taste on the back of the tongue. Mouthfeel is smooth and overall a very tasty beer.

16 oz can served in a nonic pint.

Appearance: Dark honey color, nice lingering white foam. Attractive.

Aroma: Sadly, very little.

Taste: Orange marmalade, floral hops, a healthy amount of bitterness, but well-balanced. Complex and interesting throughout. Strong rye flavor (at least I think that's what rye tastes like).

Mouthfeel: Smooth, highly drinkable.

Overall: Worth picking up if you spot it.

16 oz. can poured into a Burley Oak snifter (Best by 5/21/14, just missed that)

A: Muddy brown color that has no lacing or head to speak of.

S: Smells like a pale ale with another flavor that must be the rye.

T: Decent enough but pretty plain for me, but I will chalk that up to the age. The rye comes out a bit more as it warms up. Subdued flavors that I will chalk up to the age also.

M: Watery with just a bit of carbonation to give it some texture.

O: Glad I got to try this, but it is most likely a shade of its former self. Not much flavor and barely any rye, which is usually quite a strong flavor.

Poured into pint.

S - Kind of smells like a booze bomb.no grapefruit....yeastiness....herby like and grass like hops...some simcoe..some pine... nothing too tropical.

A - dark copper color, not very see through and a one inch fluffy head. looks like a very heavy DIPA.

T - This beer is pretty good and alcohol is well masked. i have that lingering bitterness left on the back of the tongue but a very well balanced beer....not that much of a liquor bomb like i anticipated. Good...but not a stand out beer. id take a resin over this any day of the week.

Poured into an English pint it produced a one-finger head of moderately thick foam that came down to a fairly solid surface froth with very solid lacing. Color is clear dark amber with hints of dark honey and toffee and an appearance of solid carbonation. Aroma is a nice mix of malty, hop pine, and spice. It’s interesting to note that when I first drank this beer, I was unaware of the rye component to the brew, however, after reading up on the background of the beer, it actually comes across quite clear on the nose. Sometimes beer and liquor descriptions cause you to perceive things that are described in writing but aren't quite there in the glass, and sometimes they cause you to suddenly notice something that was there all the time. So, caramel and crystal malts seem to be there helping to produce a strong toffee aroma; the rye brings in an herbally, grassy, peppery-spice note; and the hops contribute a very, very light floral pine quality. All in all a sweet and appealing nose. Sip is sweet and malty up front with caramel, toffee, and mild hints of butterscotch alongside some grassy notes from the rye. Mid-palate sees the bitter notes come on strong - bitter hops, mild white pepper hints, and bitter cocoa. Back of the tongue and swallow see a strong bitterness matched with sweet cola, roasted pear, and toffee sensations. Finish is short and somewhat unimpressive, dominated by a generalized bitter dryness subtlety under-girded with rye notes. The balance is towards the bitter in this ale, and yet this is nonetheless a solidly constructed beer with enough smooth malt backbone to keep it from becoming a tannin bomb - in fact, it’s dangerously drinkable. Carbonation is a bit strong, but works perfectly in this case by breaking up some of the malt-y sweetness in spots. If I had to credit one thing that makes this such a superior beer it would be what a smooth and velvety mouthfeel it has, specifically in terms of the malty side of the equation. All-in-all, this is one terrific, subtlety complex, and dangerously drinkable brew. Furthermore, it's really interesting to see a brewery go in a different direction than super-hoppy IPAs with a rye beer.

The beer comes in a rusty brownish dark amber with a one finger head.

The aroma has a good amount of piney hops, some spicy rye and caramel malt as well.

The flavor follows with a wonderfully clean piney hop character along with some significant caramel malt and pop of spicy rye in the middle. The finish is pretty clean without being extremely bitter, although leaving some piney and leafy bitterness.

This is a well balanced drinker. There's a wonderful combination of hops, sweet malt, spicy rye, medium body, full flavor, yet without being too bitter for the palate and easy drinking.

Pours copper with a large head.
Nose shows tropical fruit, including mango, papaya and lychee. A fair bit of sweet malt too along with a spicy rye bready note.
Harsher flavours, not as sweet as the aroma would suggest. More bready and toasty notes. A fairly aggressive bitterness in the finish.
Nice moderately high carbonation.

Special version brewed at Adnams (at 6.3% abv) for Wetherspoons. A copper coloured beer with a slightly offwhite head and a citric, mostly lemony, nose. It begins with a warm, sweet lemony flavour similar to Jack D'or brewed by Pretty Things before a more leafy hop flavour takes over backed by a rather savoury biscuitiness (I guess that'll be the rye). It leaves a pleasant oily residue on the tongue, meaning the big hops really linger. It was a pity I only had time for a half pint (particularly at £1.79 per pint).

Hazy copper colour with a big, foamy, off-white head. Great head retention and lovely, rocky lacing.

Oily, resinous hop aroma with touches of pine. Light rye, phenolic-like character. Sweet malt to back it up.

Rich rounded malt character with clear and evident rye character then a big hop bunch. Tons of bitterness that creates a balancing kick. Nice flavour that really is righteous.

Medium body with moderately high carbonation. Solid.

A rocking beer. Excellent, big hop flavour balanced by a nice rye malt flavour.

Glorious brewer delivering in a glorious 16 oz can. If you're gonna sell 4 packs at 6 pack prices, please put your beers into 1 pint cans as these bright folks from Six Point do. Bravo!

Appearance: It's not clear, it's a lemon ice tea colored cloudy body with a light tan head and a ton of lacing. Nicely carbonated.

Smell: The great outdoors, a big damp field. Would like more but gets better as it warms.

Taste: Nicely complex; starts w fruit jam and rye bread; pine and grass/hay hops; and a long long rye finish that takes off from the sweet start into a long, dry, spicy finale. Great finish on the beer, makes you want to rinse and repeat. Also ice tea like.

Mouthfeel: Medium carbonated, bodied and rich. Nice tingly finish. Leaves you in a great place. Very appetizing, would enjoy with hearty meals. (stew, beef, lamb meat balls, fish stew, strong cheese, etc).

O: Sixpoint does it again. I put them on the podium with Stone, Ballast Pt, Smutty Nose.

Poured into a sam adams glass, great, off white to tan, head developed with nice retention and lacing. Aroma was malty and herbal with some hop and lemon notes. Appearance was a haze, amber to copper color. Tasted a sweet malt to start with some herbal notes and went to a hoppy and bitter finish, good stuff. Mouthfeel was creamy and full with a nice bitter and dry aftertaste.

Pour brown and a bit hazy. Kind of looks like a dark iced tea. The smell is ok. Kind of a little sour smell and some hops. Nothing bad or good about it. The taste is pleasant. Kind of graining and a touch sour. It's a good mix and pretty smooth. Overall, this is a decent beer that has a place on a fall night.

Brown redish orange hue. I bought a 4-pack for only $6 (half price in NYC) because the box was a little beat up so I guess the store wanted to get rid of it. I didn't even realize it was a rye beer until I cracked a can.

This bear has grainy nose that is sort of flat. The only thing is, I'm not sure that the smell could be any better, but it works with the taste.

My favorite thing about this beer is the mouthfeel for sure. It gets a little sour around the edges of the tongue and just kinda stays there. It has a pleasant and lasting aftertaste.

Pours medium amber with a big off-white head and some lace.

Well hopped and spicy grain notes. Some good toasted malt in there as well for aroma.

Big pine hop and toast malt note up front. Malt has a spicy kick that is balanced well by the hop profile. Sugars exist, with a little caramel, but this one his more brown bread crust and grain husk than anything. Hops big in the finish with the malt.

Medium body, good firm carbonation.

Big winner. Tasty and complex.

I had a few of these 16 oz cans at August in the West Village. It poured a red/brown with a beige head. The smell gave off light hints of malt, caramel and rye. The taste was something roasted, perhaps coffee. I struggled to find a ton of rye, but that was a good thing. It allowed the subtle floral hops to shine through. The carbonation was lively. This was well balanced and does not go overboard on the hops.

Love these Sixpoint tallboy cans. I almost skipped right over this thinking it was one of the others when I saw it on the shelf. Glad I picked it up. Pours coppery with a decent head. Lovely smells and tastes- lots of gently spicy rye and toasty malt that lends the beer a nice sweetness. Slight hints of chocolate that you get in rye sometimes. Not an uber rye like the founders, more restrained, and a bit sweeter and softer, but oh so balanced. Delicious.

Pours copper brown with a slight haze, perhaps from chill. Plenty of bubbles making their way to the top. A soft, fat beige head of foam that fell slowly enough to leave good lace and a thick ring. Constantly refreshed with each tilt of the glass. Nose is fragrant with citrus and with bold rye. The hop qualities are floral and there's a bit of spice character on the nose as well. The malt smells breaddy and sweet. Taste follows the nose all the way. The citrus greets the palate a bit tart and then takes a nice bitter to the mid palate. The malt is full and has plenty of bread to carry the spice of the rye and the hop qualities to the back palate where they settle with a good bitter. The honey sweetness of the malt is modest and there is excellent balance between all the bold flavors and the fullness of the malt. Body is rich but drinks pleasant and light. Ample carbonation.

Many people shy away from brown ales because they find them boring or bland. Well this beer will change all that. The hop qualities keep the palate interested and the gently sweet malt keeps it satisfied. The rye makes this beer. It is so well done and really shines with it's touch of sour alongside a perfect citrus tartness. Bold refreshing and brawny.

16 oz. can poured into Cisco imperial pint glass. Best before October 9, 2013.

A - Pours an autumn brown with red highlights. A few fingers of head last for quite a while before receding to reveal a nearly complete lacing.

S - A very aromatic combination of nutty bread, spicy rye, and citrus hops jumps from the can as soon as I pop it. Some sweet honey BBQ malts finish off this wonderfully fragrant nose.

T - Follows the nose closely. Full flavored with roasted malts, bitter hops, and a recognizable rye bite. Very well balanced. Sweet, spicy, bitter, bready.

M - Rich body with some prickly carbonation.

O - I was very impressed by this beer. I don't typically favor rye beers, but this had tremendous balance. Complexity of flavors that all came together perfectly, with nothing out of place. Bonus points because I love the pounder can format. I will be revisiting this one frequently.

A- This beer pours a dense walnut brown body that glows at the base with strands of microbubbles leading to a sticky thick head that has some nice lacing.

S- The yeasty ester aroma is almost bubble gum in character with a dark dry toffee and grain spice to follow

T- The slight sweetness leads to an earthy spicy to a full on green herbal hop flavor that lingers in the aftertaste with some roasted malt notes popping up. The dry finish helps enhance the malt character.

M- The medium mouthfeel has a gentle crisp fizz in the finish.

O- This is a nice dry rye beer with a good balance of dark malt and dark hop mixed in.
