Appearance: Clear mahogany liquid drains from the hand bottle, creating a modest and short-lived head that leaves splashy lacing - as this was hand bottled some time back (can't remember who sent this to me as an extra), I will give it the benefit of the doubt, scorewise

Smell: Hazelnuts, walnuts and brazil nuts, with a dusting of cocoa powder

Taste: The nut blend jumps out in front, with the hazelnuts most prominent; quickly, a boozy blend of cocoa, vanilla and dates joins and adds complexity, both before and after the swallow; sweetness is restrained in the finish, allowing all of the complex flavors to shine without distraction

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation; some warmth in the gullet

Drinkability: Not as fruity or as sweet as most dubbels, this beer impresses with its nutty complexity with a cocoa dusting that approaches a liquid Nutella dimension

Another in a series of hand filled bottles courtesy of NutBrown. Thanks Alan!

I'm serving this near room temp.

I got a small hiss when I popped the cap so I started pouring. It looked like there was to be no foam but by the time I finished filling my New Belgium goblet, there was about an inch of it. Not much foam, yeah, but the lacing was surprisingly good. It was bottled Jan. 2nd and I waited after I got it. Pretty impressive.

The smell some sweet malt with some very nice dark fruit notes and yes, *some* alcohol. The fruit part of this deal has an air of plums and raisins about it and when I concentrate on them and the malty features, the alcohol is quickly forgotten.

Taste wise...this Dubbel is remarkably sweet. That comes from the sweet malt but I think the fruit also is geared towards the sweet end...but, when I swish the brew in my mouth, I get a hint of some nice tartness; so, not all the fruity tones are coming across as sweet after all. Nice.

I'm also getting a bit of spice the more I sip. Light peppery notes and a very cinnamon like flavour that isn't the most obvious flavour here but I'm pretty sure my palate says it's there. This is more complex of a Dubbel than my first sips told me.

It has a medium body with very light carbonation but it(the carbo) does give me a light zing during the swallow.

Drinkability? This is certainly a stronger example of the style than most that I've tried but dag nab it, the alcohol just doesn't get in the way as much as I thought it would and that's a good thing. Very tasty and very enjoyable. I give it a big thumbs up!

Plum body with reddish tint. Spicy aroma of nuts, plums, slight booze, spices, some roast. Active carbonation on the tongue, slight roast, alcoholic booze disguised in plum outfit, burn toward the finish that lingers and ashes in the remains of the taste. (Cigarettes and smoked ham anyone?) Nah, I don't smoke, the aftertaste gets to me.

Dark brown pour, with a finger of tan head. Decent lacing. Black cherry, alcohol, plum, cocoa powder, and maltiness all present in the nose. The taste yielded all of these flavors, but the sweetness of the malt and chocolate needs to be toned down just a bit, as does the alcohol burn at the finish. A little strong for a dubbel. Definitely feels more like a tripel, or dare I say a quad. All in all a good beer, with potential to be outstanding.

On tap at Sixpoint week, Rattle n Hum:

A: Surprisingly nut-brown dark, ranging into ruby, hazy, with a modestly sized, dark head

S/T: It's a tad boozy and a bit tart, but it's also got a great spice to it. Probably some rye involved, a very good malt presence for a dubbel, and the fresh herbal hops round it out.

M: Great. Full, with a nice long finish.

D: It's a bit on the aggressive side, felt more like a tripel, but who cares, it was amazing.

(From notes)

A - Dark, dark brown color with ruby hints; thin slightly off-white head. Pretty dense looking.

S - Plums; sweetish maltiness; a little vinous

T - Dark sweet fruits; almost a little dry if that makes sense? Vinous where others in the style lean toward a bit sweeter/sugary

M - Medium MF; not sticky; very subtle carbonation

D - Hugely drinkable for the style and the dryish nature upped this portion of the rating for me. Interesting and satisfying.

Overall, a very good but different example of the style. Has good originality, but doesn't venture too far. Would definitely recommend.

Deep caramel, toffee and chocolate, spices intertwined to make this Double Trubble. Thick and rich flavours blend together so nicely, easily drinkable. I am especially happy that there is no detectable hoppiness to this brew, even though it is advertised Sixpoint uses Saaz hops in this recipe!!

Gorgeous looks, thick beige head and beautiful ring lacing compliment the tulip. Aromas of chocolate covered almonds, walnuts, and a touch of confectionary sugar. Crisp carbonation wipe the palate with raw nuts; almonds, peanuts, pistachio, and cashew. Further exploration reveals spice character reminiscent of pecan pie with a hint of brown sugar. A crisp dry finish closes the door on a wonderful dessert. This one really showed off on bottle in comparison to its draft brethren. An excellent interpretaion on a classic style.

Growler fill from Capone's...
Appears a dark, chestnut brown with a light tan head that seems to stick around. Scattered bits of lacing are left around the glass.
Smell is of black cherries, raisins, cocoa powder, and crushed cashews with a spicy, phenolic yeastiness.
Taste is of the mentioned aromas with plenty of "dubbel-esque" flavors pulling through with spiced raisins and cocoa dominating the flavors.
This one reminds me a bit of General Lafayette's Dubbel. Good stuff.

On tap at Capone's.

Poured a deeper amberish/brown color with a smaller sized off white head. Aromas of toast, chocolate, lightly earhty, yeastiness, and some tart cherries. Tastes of chocoalte, dark fruits (raisins and plums), lighter yeast, and lighter spices. Lacing left on the glass. Alcohol content well hidden.
