Pours a pale amber colour, with slight bubbling. Head is white, a bit thin but decent. Lace is OK. Nice enough.

Smells weird. Honey and boot polish. Sweet, oaty bread. Bit funky. Odd.

Taste is quite bready, yeasty. Dry, with some rubber notes and more honey, and a touch of oat. Some crisp apple, but not much else crisp or really fresh. OK though.

A bit of texture. Bit of body. Still a bit stodgy for a lager.

Nice enough, but could be crisper for something called 'the crisp'.

Appearance: A touch darker than your adjunct pilsner, it's crowned by a fairly fluffy head. Good head retention.

Smell: Hops, some biscuit malt, and a little bit of skunkiness that you're going to expect from a German-style pilsner.

Taste: Fresh, ultra-dry hops and a touch of malt. This isn't my favorite style by any means, but this beer tastes refreshing with its floral flavors.

Mouthfeel: Near perfect, the beer truly is crisp without being overcarbonated. It's sessionable despite being flavorful.

Overall: Absolutely the best pilsner I've had and likely to please the IPA fans who are normally wary of malty lagers or pilsners.

12 oz. can poured into pilsener
(best before May 3, 2015)

L: yellow and very cloudy for a pilsener, meaning about 75% clear; incredible 1-inch head of ultra-white foam that is super sticky and is now lacing something fierce off a massive collar; brew clears up a bit over time, and as it does, you can see plenty of the lager-like/pilsener-esque bubbles ... the clarity issue is the only minus here, otherwise perfect

S: now THAT is dry-hopped ... unmistakable green/grass/flower smell sits on top of this thing nicely; very sweet considering the hops are showcased so well; some grain and malt are in there, but they're very subdued ... grain might be corn or sour rice -- malt is cracker-like

T: bitter ... 44 IBUs here taste like 88 ale IBUs ... the lager is delicate enough to let the hop taste show itself all the way in a bitter floral note that has some grass in it but tastes mostly like a pile of lilac or rose petals mashed to a pulp; some malt sweetness showing here and there, but this is virtually all hops; tastes much more bitter than the sweeter nose

F: light but well-carbonated for a nice fullness

O: immediately reminds me of Prima Pils, and it's almost so American-ized that one could argue we need a new style: the American pilsener. very bitter, very floral and almost no malt presence to balance it ... i hear dry-hopping is mainly for the smell, but it sure bitters up the taste in most dry-hopped beers I drink. that is definitely the case here.

but if I'm missing the good bread malt balancing notes and if I'm going to dock points for a lack of clarity, I also have to give The Crisp full points for being fantastic at what it wants to be -- a super-hoppy pilsener with American hop flavors. I get why people love this brew, and it's one I'll likely revisit.
