Ohio

3.63/5  rDev -10.6%
look: 4 | smell: 4 | taste: 3.5 | feel: 3.5 | overall: 3.5

Enjoyed this past weekend after the Sixpoint launch throughout Ohio two weeks ago. Been looking forward to the much-talked-about Resin Imperial IPA.

From a 12-oz tall thin can into a tulip glass. Reads “Best before July 30, 2012″ on bottom of can.

Appearance: Blood orange or rusty copper tone with a finger’s worth of thick off white head. Head is abundant even after a slow pour and looks like it was sprinkled with cinnamon. The body is relatively opaque for an IPA, actually. I find it hard to see my fingers on the other side of the glass. Lots of itty bitty carbonation bubbles in the body. Head retains very well. Some sticky lacing is left behind. 4.25/5

Smell: Dank hops. I can smell the pine from a mile away. This baby is pretty freshly hopped. Resin indeed. Smell is primarily piney and sticky. Undercurrent of citrus. A little grassy. 4/5

Taste: Very hoppy yet not overpowering. A well rounded attack of some mild fruits, a bit of floral, and of course a strong round of that truly sticky pine. A definite candy like sweetness underlies what is mostly hops. There’s a bitterness here that is sneaky but builds up quickly sip by sip. Aftertaste is fresh pine. Good taste but doesn’t wow me. More mild and well balanced than anything outstanding (though there’s something to be said for good balance). Just not entirely my thing. 3.5/5

Mouthfeel: I find it easy to get a “head start” on this brew with the sneaky bitterness, but things slow down halfway thru. Yes, it’s sticky. It’s fairly thick and syrupy for a DIPA, a bit too much so for my tastes. 3.75/5

Overall: Fairly drinkable, but high in ABV, so you won’t be smashing these (hopefully). A little bit of a “stingy” feel to it. A good beer but not a great one, at least for me. The taste, as it has been with most of my brief experience with Sixpoint’s brews, is balanced and “classical”. Solid, for sure, but not much more than that for me. 3.5/5

From a can stamped "drink by 7/13/14".

A. Light golden amber appearance with a white, frothy head of two fingers that ever so slowly recedes into a full covering skim. Lacing is perfect.

S. Dank, slightly soapy, whey-like malt - not much in terms of hop aromas other than a hint of pine.

T. Starts off malty with that whey-like flavor carrying over from the nose. Moves quickly to resiny pine. Finishes with building, lingering hop bitterness. Alcohol is hidden quite well.

M. Nice creaminess that doesn't get in the way of drinkability.

O. This is another great beer from Sixpoint that's not far off from Hi-Res in my book. Has a little less sweetness and more hop bite than Hi-Res making for a more classic tasting and easier drinking DIPA.

Best by 7/13/14.

A - Light golden ale with a huge thick head that stays there for several minutes. Lots of lacing.

S - Caramel malt and light pine from the fresh hops they dry hop with

T - Sweet, light caramel, grain, a light fresh pine taste as well. Doesnt taste super hoppy or complex but its smooth and easy to drink for 9.1%. Really dont taste much alcohol at all.

M - Medium-Full body. Really nice and smooth. Milk carbonation

O - A really smooth, fresh hop, easy to drink, light Double IPA.

Date on can says best before April 27 2014. Not so fresh, but a beer given to me from someone I know who was on a trip traveling in a state that carries Sixpoint beers (Score!)

A - Hazy bright golden when held to the light with lively carbonation and decent two finger white head. Leaves nice lovely lacing.

S - Dank Pine, caramel malt, tobacco, sweetness.

T - Sweet and bready, followed by a light piney bitterness that lingers.

M - Medium body and with a nice smooth body to it. Nice amount of carbonation that seems to keep the flavors moving across you palate correctly.

O - A really enjoyable double IPA that really is easy to drink for being over 9%. Wonder what it would taste like fresh, however the beer is really enjoyable. It goes down almost to easy, with no sign of alcohol. Another must try for IPA lovers, and I promise you will not be disappointed, cheers!
