Best before 10/13/13.

Appearance: Opaque orange and honey hue with a fluffy three finger off-white head. Looks at home in a tulip glass.

Aroma: Orange citrus but not too in-your-face. Something slightly dank in there as well.

Taste: Starts with moderate bitterness and develops an orange nectar hop flavor with some definite earthy tones in there as well. There is a juicy element to the hop character that is hard to place but the effect is hard to miss. Given the name and description on the can I was expecting Resin to be hot and piney but the end result good. I was also expecting somewhat of a malt bomb but the grain takes a bit of a backseat and allows the juiciness from the hops to rule the palate. And it only gets better as you get further through the beer. Each time it hits your palate it becomes a more and more defined flavor. The 9.1% ABV sneaks through as a heat in the back of the throat. Easygoing finish and a hot aftertaste with some bitterness lingering.

Mouthfeel: Medium in body with very smooth carbonation. The juicy factor of this beer makes it highly drinkable and not nearly as cloying or sticky as the name would suggest. Almost refreshing at times.

Final Thoughts: I was worried buying this beer because I had no idea how old it was (despite a 'best before' date). After reviewing Resin I look into it and find out that this one was canned in February. Glad I didn't know it was so old at the time of the purchase because it has held up quite well. Would I drink it again? Sure, especially if Sixpoint switches to a 'canned on' date.

12oz can into a tulip glass
Best by: Oct 13 2013

Thanks to Finatic for sending this one over as an extra!

A: Pours a hazy apricot orange with 3plus fingers width of slightly off white colored head. Moderate retention but it dissipates down fairly quickly. Leaves tons of cool honeycomb lacing.

S: Grapefruit, citrus rind, resinous piney hops, floral. Sweet malts bring it all together.

T: Follows the nose, except even more citurs forward with grapefruit, lemon zest, more subtle orange. A big degree of sweet malts balance things out nicely, there's almost a sugary sweetness. Piney bitterness lingers on the finish.

M/D: Full bodied, carbonation appropriate, ABV very well masked, drinkability well above average. Nice mouthfeel.

O: Overall, a very good DIPA. Strong hop notes, but very well balanced. Very good from top to bottom. Well done.

Poured from a 12oz can, best before 13 Oct 2013, courtesy of Greywulfken. Presumably pretty fresh -- thanks! :)

A: Pours a mostly clear deep golden color with a finger of fluffy white head that dissipates to a spotty film sustained by sparse bubbling. Lacing is spotty but plentiful down the glass.

S: Great aroma of fresh, earthy and citrusy character explodes from the can upon opening and ramins strong in the glass. Upon warming, alcohol begins to show through in the nose, but the predominant aromas of hops and sweet malts remain strong. A nice smelling beer.

T: Sadly, probably my least favorite part of this beer, and not aided too much by the dryness of the mouthfeel. Strong and sharp citric bite up front leads into a little malt sweetness balancing out a ton of bitterness. Hops provide citrus character, a flavor I can only describe as green (in a plant way), and an almost onion-like flavor. On warming, alcohol also shows through strongly. The dryness of the finish compounds with the bitterness to leave an otherwise crisp finishing beer less refreshing than I was hoping it might be.

M: Nice medium body fills the mouth aided by reasonable carbonation that could be a little stronger. Fairly dry on the finish. Nicely crisp.

O: A good beer, but not one I'm itching to revisit. The hop profile in this beer is unique among IPAs I've had, and I think with fair reason. It is really close to being nice and refreshing, particularly for a 9abv beer, but the bitterness and dryness really left me wanting more refreshment than I was getting.

Poured from a 12 oz can into a footed tulip.

A: Dark golden hue. Lots of rising effervescence. Pours a 1+ finger, bubbly whit-ish head. Settles pretty quickly leaving a distinct foam blanket, and a thick beer ring. Pretty nice spider web lacing.

S: Pine resin with a bit of a floral character. Simple yet pristine.

T: Really bitter and piny and just a little sweet balance. Like the nose.... simple and pristine.

M: Syrupy and bitter. Mouth puckering. Dry finish.

D: Sip and savor. The character will dictate it.

Atmosphere is pretty strong. Nice hue, lots of carbonation, great head, and some very nice lacing. Floral pine resin in the nose. Bitter syrupy pine with a slight sweet tone. Simplicity is sometimes the best. Overall, this is a really good quaff.

If drinking a liquid onion sounds good to you then this beer is right up your alley. The beer looks and smells like a typical IPA, with assertive hops, bread and a mild fruity aroma. The taste is completely different however, overpowering onion flavor. Pretty gross really. I finished it, but won't be getting this again.
