Growler from FreeBridge.

Shiny orange gold body, slightly hazy, topped by two fingers of whipped foam. Nice dripping stretchy lace.

Inviting aroma of oranges.

Solid firm semi-sweet foundation forms a true base. Plenty of juicy fruit. Nice snap at the swallow. Low level bitterness.

Smooth medium plus mouthfeel, just a hint of good prickliness.

A solid enjoyable IPA featuring a hop that doesn't get a lot of attention right now. I continue to be a Sixpoint fan.

Fed up with sweeter and more delicate fruit-hop flavor and aroma are ya? Well then, Sixpoint's Spice of Life-Columbus edition has got your back.

This absurdly hopped ale pours with a heavy haze of presumed yeast and hop matter. Hazy straw in color and appearances, the beer looks like white grapefruit juice. And the comparisons to the grapefruit is just beginning. The beer constructs a creamy white froth than clings desperately to the glass and does so in abundance. Aside from the exorbitant haze, the beer impresses on all other fronts.

Sharp aromas of grapefruit and fresh-cut grass leap from the glass and into the olfactory senses with a strong and pungent girth. The timid malt bill is hardly recognizable underneath the onslaught of hops, but simply informs the nose with light bread/grain, and citric sweetness.

Flavors are every bit as one-sided as was promised by the nose. As soon as the beer hits the front of the tongue, the sharp bitterness of white grapefruit juice and muddled grasses wafts over the mouth with a sudden and surprising attack. Very light breadiness allows a starch flavor and thin grain sweetness to buffer ever so lightly against the hop flavor and bitterness in such a way to give impressions of fruit juices and fuller bodied teas.

The gregarious bitterness allows the astringent textures of leafy matter to follow as the beer sheds its early creaminess and concentrates its sharpness and hop derived acidity with palate stripping and throat clutching bite to resonate deep into the gullet. Even its moderate alcohol is no match for the obnoxious hop additions.

Citrusy bitterness is usually identified in American hop varieties, but this Columbus-infused ale shows that this British hop can do the same. Sixpoint sells it's character to perfection!

Pours a hazy apricot color with a half inch off white head that lingers.

Aroma is fairly malty with subdued citrus tones and tea-like hops.

Flavor is fairly bitter, grassy, and gives the impression of what chewing on a lawn might taste like. Grapefruit and apricot citrus background is supported by significant bready caramel malt. Notes of wheat are accentuated.

Body is moderate with moderate carbonation and a slightly astringent finish.

Apparently I'm not a huge Columbus hop fan. Good bittering hops but not a lot of flavor character.

Enjoyed on tap at the Prohibition Pg. A good IBU forward IPA based on flavour . Easy drinking. Bold in your face carbonation and flavour explosion that stuns/freezes the palate. More malting would improve drinkability and mouthfeel. Still good stuff coming out of sixpoint.

Serves on tap at While Foods. Appearance is cloudy gold with razor thin white head. Sticky lacing left behind. Aroma featuress caramel Malts with pine hops which are very mild. The taste has a nice pungent Columbus hop profile with notes of grass and pine sap. Great balance on the flavor with a nice amount of bitterness, clean aftertaste. The body is light with high carbonation. Overall, very tasty, just lacking in aromatic qualities.

Straight pour from 750ml swing-top growler to an oversized wine glass (HF stemware). Purchased the same day from the Syracuse Real Food Co-op. Thanks Jeremy (bentonquest)!

Appearance (4.5): Basically perfect, to be frank. The body is a beautiful honey / golden orange color, and pretty hazy but not opaque. The head rises to a solid two fingers of bone-white foam and bubbles, fading slowly to a haze on the surface, leaving big spots and legs of lace. Really super.

Smell (4.5): Sweet citrus: pineapple and lemon, some mango, that sort of aroma. Very nice, very aromatic—moderately pungent. Some resin mixed in there, too. Any malt sweetness blends seamlessly with the sweet citrus of the Columbus hops here, which is excellent.

Taste (4.0): Not surprisingly, the hops come along first here, with a pungent but not overpowering citrusy, pithy bitterness, with a good dose of that funky, “catty” flavor you get with Simcoe, Columbus, stuff like that. Somewhat dank, too. The malts stay out of the way—they’re simple and bready, truly playing a supporting role here while the hops do their thing. The bitterness hangs on in the finish for a while, steadily but slowly diminishing. This is pretty damn good.

Mouthfeel (4.0): Carbonation is lush and soft, and expansive, too. It’s cuddly and friendly, velvety even! The body is slightly oily, on the light side of medium-, but sturdy at the same time. Surprisingly quenching, too—a nice touch.

Overall (4.0): No question about it, this is a hop story. Which makes sense, of course, for a single-hop IPA. Ideally there’d be a more complex malt character and some diversity in the hop profile, but in this case it comes with the territory: showcase one hop variety, and just keep the malt from distracting from anything. And for that, they really did an excellent job. Fortunately, Columbus is a great hop by itself, so this is a great IPA by itself! Sixpoint really does nice work with the Spice of Life series, and this is an excellent addition.
