12 oz can poured into a snifter.
Pours very dark brown, nearly black, with a finger of off-white foam. Aroma is roasted, tannic, bitter, astringent stale coffee-like sensation mixed with unsweetened dark chocolate. As a coffee lover, this smells amazing, almost like cold-pressed coffee.
First sip is quite potent, with a astringent coffee flavor smacking the taste buds up front. That gives way to a hit of sweet cocoa flavor, but not much. There is also a long lingering bitterness on the tongue. Beer is quite viscous, and the 10% ABV is reasonably well hidden.
This is a very interesting, unique beer. I give kudos to Sixpoint for pushing the envelope yet again. That said, I feel this is a touch too bitter and unbalanced toward the coffee side to be truly great. At the current price point of $13+ for a 4 pack, I'll be passing in the future.
