look: 4.25 | smell: 4 | taste: 3.75 | feel: 4.25 | overall: 4

It's a pretty beer, nearly black with a pretty thick body and just a hint of orange-brown in the cracks, so to speak. The head is medium brown, thick and chunky, almost two fingers tall. It rests heavily atop the beer and falls slowly down to half a finger or just less when it ultimately settles. It drops a steady and strong lacing down the glass.
It's an aromatic beer that pretty much shows off what it claims. Coffee is up front, fresh, with some cocoa present in notes of bitter chocolate and creamier milk chocolate. It's earthy, there's a whole lot of roast running all the way through that offers a bit of char in it, and there's a sort of berries/dark fruits note underneath.
The taste pretty much follows suit, but there's something to the additional bitterness I can't quite finger. The charcoal note combines with it and seems to bring out just a little note of something acrid. Otherwise, there's just a bit of herb mingling with the coffee and chocolate, and the tang backs off a little while something more floral comes out slowly.
It's got the advertised smoothness, though for all the beans I'd expect a more silky touch. It is creamy and quite lush, though, and it doesn't lack as the full body rolls on the tongue with a smooth and easy carbonation offering just enough of a bite with a focus working toward that velvety feeling. Alcohol adds a prickle but not much more, and it blends well.
