Alright, 3Beans by Sixpoint has been a much-touted beer, so when I saw it at a local liquor store, I had to buy it. It comes in sleek, cool-looking 12 oz. cans, which Sixpoint calls "nano kegs" (not sure if I'm on board with the slightly gimmicky name, but whatever). Poured into my Beer Geek Nation tulip glass.

Appearance (4/5): Almost completely black, extremely dark brown, with a khaki head of foam that towers three-plus finger above the body of the beer.

Smell (4.5/5): Serious coffee/espresso notes, bittersweet dark chocolate, roasty, complex and pungent. Very nice. As it warms up, I get more milk chocolate character in the nose.

Taste (4.5/5): Right off the bat, you're hit with major coffee bitterness, some bittersweet dark chocolate follows the nose, and no alcohol heat at all. Very roasty and dry like you'd expect a porter to be. There's a lingering chocolatey taste that sticks around for a long time. Really keeps that palate working.

Mouthfeel (5/5): 3Beans packs an incredible mouthfeel. It's creamy and thick from the beginning, and it's almost chewy at the end. It has finish for days; it's making me salivate, there's so much residual flavor and intense bitterness. Appropriately low carbonation level works well with the creaminess.

Overall (4.5/5): Sixpoint 3Beans is an exceptional beer. This brew isn't special just because it uses unusual ingredients; it's a masterwork of intense flavor and carefully considered implementation of ingredients. I must emphasize, the mouthfeel is something to behold..this stuff goes down like a chocolate shake. This is the best beer of Sixpoint's that I've had. Wonderful.

Draft at The Pour House in Westmont, NJ.

Pitch black with a two finger beige head that has good retention, slowly fading into a lasting ring.  Streaks of spotty lacing left behind.

Roasted dark malt aroma with lots of coffee bean character along with dry oak and dark chooclate notes.  Deeply roasted gourmet coffee with toasted oak, oatmeal and dark chocolate.  Subtle lactic presnce.  I was expecting more coffee in the nose.

Fuller end of medium body with a dry, bitter and robust coffee presence that lingers over the dark malt profile into a bone dry finish.  Some dry oak and dark chocolate flavor complimented by espresso bean and burnt toast.  Subtle lactic presence and subtle sweetness balance things out.  Lots of coffee flavor but not a one dimensional coffee bomb.  Dry and acrid but easy to drink because the high abv is nicely masked.  Not a bad beer but not very interesting either.

Enjoyed this on draft at Aunt Chilada's in Hamden, CT. Served in a snifter because of the high ABV. Appropriately named because you can actually taste all three beans. Very strong. Very tasty.

This was my first time finally trying a Six Point brew. Can't wait to try more varieties.

On draft at Capone's.

The beer has a brown cola body with a thick, creamy, beige head. Ample lacing coats the glass. the aroma is coffee beans all the way. The flavor is big time coffe. Chocolate covered espresso beans, roast. Medium bodied and creamy on the palate. Alcohol content hidden beautifully. Perhaps this beer is one dimensional, but if you enjoy a big, rich coffee stout, you should seek this out. Yum.

On tap at Kickbacks in Jax. Poured into a snifter. Beige head, moderate to low retention on a dark ruby, almost black body. Clear oily, sticky lacing. Aroma includes roasted malt, cocoa puffy chocolate, coffee and vanilla. Taste closely follows the aromas. Medium mouthfeel, NO alcohol noted on aroma or tasting. Insanely drinkable considering the abv. Really, really a tasty beer, borderline genius.

I had this on tap at The Pour House in Westmont, NJ. In retrospect I should have started with it instead of finishing. It has an extremely heavy flavor and feel. Coupled with the higher alcohol content it was probably poor timing for me. It tastes very good and I would have given it a better rating, but I guess it was just too much for me at the time.

First had: on tap at Capone's, Norristown, PA

Served in a Leffe chalice (whatever), dark brown-black pour, topped off with a nice creamy cap of tan head; good retention, stratifying lacing. In the nose, dark malts, coffee, cocoa, very smooth all over. More of the same in the taste, more emphasis on sweet, less on roasty/bitter, dark malts, coffee (very nice), cocoa, caramel, cream. Smooth mouthfeel, medium-full body, full of flavor, and higher ABV extremely well-hidden. Great beer overall. Too bad it's a one-off.

On tap at When Pigs Fly. In a snifter the beer was a very dark brown color with a medium-sized cafe au lait head. There were sheets of lace.

Primarily coffee aroma, but also some chocolate.

Strong coffee/espresso taste. Dark chocolate. They complimented each other really well.

Great beer with real depth. The chocolate kept the coffee from being too bitter. Another one of those easy-drinking beers that you need to be careful of, given it's high ABV.

Served on-tap in a 12 oz. hexagonal glass at Eli Cannon's in Middletown, Conn.

A: Very dark brown to near black in color with a very thin veil of espresso colored carbonation which quickly faded, leaving a glassy sheen over the brew.

S: Sweet and roasty with lots of bitter, charred malt aromas, herbal, earthy hops and a distinct bittersweet cocoa scent.

T: Rich, sweet and robust, this is a very well-roasted and strong Baltic Porter. The fresh coffee and chocolate flavors are immediate, but the secondary hints of tobacco, vanilla and hazelnut are an unexpected treat. Dark, roasted specialty malts lend a bit of spizy, herbal fruitiness to the palate in the form of raisin before washing back with a sweet, bitter finish and singe of alcohol.

M: Full-bodied but very drinkable without becoming cloyingly sweet. A very nice sipper.

O: This heavy-hitting, uber-flavorful Baltic Porter may clock in at 10% ABV, but it's dangerously drinkable on its own and could be even better with a chocolate or berry-accented dessert. I'm glad I got to try this limited-run, dark, strong specialty brew; seek it out!

Enjoyed on tap at the Armsby Abby. Served into a tulip.

A - Poured a deep rich dark brown almost black pour with a very nice one finger mocha head that faded to leave light lacing and a thin thin blanket. Solid appearance for such a higher ABV baltic porter.

S - The nose is nice with good, rich coffee and light bourbon. Smells nice, however, there is ALOT of roast malts here. Almost burnt roast aspects. And hints of dark fruits....hmm...

T - It starts with fainter coffee, light vanilla barrel notes and bourbon. Starts off quite tasty infact. Once this starts to warm up more though it becomes something else...awash of astringent burnt malts and dark fruits (figs, plums) this goes from a nice light coffee and bourbon porter to a mess.

M - Mouthfeel isnt bad, slightly creamy, easy to drink with the 10% hidden nicely.

O - Overall I liked this beer, until it warmed up. Became pretty bad infact once it warmed, where did those dark fruits and incredibly burnt flavors come from?

One of the base beers in my recent trade with madnismo, shared one of these tonight with my Tuesday night friends.

2 finger tan head... pretty good retention and okay lacing atop a very dark brown beer that still shows nice ruby highlights at the stem.

Nose is an enticing mix of cocoa, coffee and hints of oaky vanilla.. dark caramel sugary essence helps carry and marry the aromas.

Bigger vanilla bloom on the palate that doesn't show in the nose... plenty of cocoa, coffee is lesser than the nose... dark roasty malts also don't show as much as expected... a sorta nutty malt moves in with the vanilla/caramel mash-up and produces an easy drinking brew.

Body is surprisingly light given the 10%... good carbonation, but still thick and coating... very drinkable... deceiving.

Tried this 4/1/14, so my review my be a lot lower than most.

A: beautiful dark brown, with nice 2 finger tan head
S: nice sweetness, tabacco smell, not getting the coffee nor chocolate that most people describe
T: taste like it smells, no coffee, very little chocolate, solid porter, little boozy
MF: great part of this beer! great carb, nice and light on the tounge
O: A pretty solid beer. doesnt taste or drink like 10%, but it is really good. I am sure it was better fresh with the huge coffee arome and flavor people describe. Would have liked to get this fresh, but what can you do. very solid though!

A - Jet black, nice 2 finger tan colored head that settles to a cap that stays and laces the glass on the way down.

S - Amazing! Coffee, chocolate, earthy burnt notes. Chocolate really pops in the nose more as it warms.

T - Balanced, of all the coffee beers I've had this one brings the most balance. Coffee and chocolate are both there, both imparting bitterness. Char notes work themselves in and a sweetness to malt body round it out. It finishes with some bitterness from the coffee and chocolate and some hop flavor that comes out in the finish.

M - Smooth, lighter in body than you'd expect, some sharp carbonation that is unexpected but works and a rather dry finish.

O - I'm going to miss this beer. Sixpoint, bring this back! This is an amazing coffee/chocolate porter that hides it's 10% punch. It's balanced, it's different and it's amazing.

One year old can purchased from Beers of the World in Rochester, NY.

Pours a dark, opaque brown color. A lighter brown mocha-colored head forms, about one inch, with nice strings of lacing down the glass.

Aromas include dark roasted malt, strong nutty coffee, chocolate, all sorts of great rich things on the nose.

The flavor is similar. The coffee flavor is quite prominent, and pretty intense- it's of the bitter and nutty variety, with a bit of sweetness near the end that's reminiscent of hazelnut. The roasted malt also provides a nice bitterness, with some dark chocolate as well- cocoa powder like, and mild. No real hop flavor.

Medium bodied, very creamy, low carbonation.

A great baltic porter, and a truly great use of coffee here, it stands tall.

Pours dark brown with ruby highlights. Has a one finger tan head, with good retention and spotty lacing. The aroma has dark roasted malt, cocoa, and coffee.

The first thing I tasted is burnt coffee, which is mot pleasant. There is also cocoa and dark roasted malt. Not very complex or special.

Medium bodied with average carbonation, and a burnt, bitter coffee aftertaste. Nothing special here. Glad I only picked up a single can.

A-Pours a deep brown color with a beige/toffee colored head that leaves a fair amount of lacing on the sides. Head is medium-thin and retains well.

S-Huge roasted coffee notes followed by sweet molasses and a hint of cocoa.

T-Bitter, roasty coffee hits the front of the palate as it fades into a burnt bready taste with a boozy bite.

MF-Medium to full bodied with slight carb. Not as rich as I'd like it to be.

O-A damn good porter. Probably my favorite so far, but I have not had a porter in a few months so I'll have to try some more. Roasted coffee notes taste exceptional and the bitterness is rounded out well with the faint molasses taste.

When purchasing, the guy behind the counter mentioned he really enjoyed this beer, and seeing the rating had me with high expectations. They were confirmed with my own tasting, a very enjoyable mocha coffee flavored porter, even if perhaps it is slightly potent.

The beer poured quite nicely, dark brown with a durable creamy tan head and significant lacing. The smell was not overpowering, but what was there was as one would expect: coffee, but also included a toasted nut scent and a hint of a little spiciness, maybe from the alcohol. I fluctuated between 3.75 and 4, as the smell seemed to become more apparent as I drank the beer.

The taste washes over the mouth with a coating of sweetened coffee (perhaps with a splash of cream), with a smoothness that hides the carbonation feel (note: I did let it warm a little before tasting) that is producing/maintaining the head. This beer is more malt than bitter, which I prefer in a darker beer, more often than not. The bitterness that is there reminds me of the bitterness of an English-style IPA/bitter, but to repeat, is subdued.

As I often seem to notice, the alcohol taste/burn is a little more present when the beer is colder [than suggested for the style]. There is a little bite at the end as the beer comes to temp, however.

Brewed in the style of a Baltic Porter with three beans added: cacao beans, coffee beans and romano beans. Released as a one off and since retired by the brewery. Available in 4 pack 12 oz. cans and limited draft.

Poured from a 12 oz. can to a tulip glass. Served north of 53º Fahrenheit.

(Appearance) Pours a thick, creamy mocha caramel head of a sudsy frothed consistency over a dark cola brown body. Carbonation is sparse and energetic. Retention is very good, lacing is light and spotty. Very nice appearance. 4

(Smell) Strong aromas of sweetened coffee and robust dark cocoa up front. Medium roasted malt with a sweet, tart and approachable body. Mild acidity is a welcome expectation for the style. Potency is high. 4

(Taste) Mildly acidic coffee bean with a , finishes tart, boozy with a husked grain lingering with a flat coffee and cocoa bean finale. A bit harsher around the edges over the aroma, arguably less enjoyable thus. 3.75

(Mouthfeel) Slick, oily and acidic. Carbonation adds a touch of creaminess and froth. Body is medium/heavy for the style, heavy overall. Alcohol presence is medium/high. 3.75

(Overall) A very unique beer that does a good job at integrating fragile bean flavors, although against the profile of a boozier Baltic Porter, the profile may be a bit distracting. 3.75

Dark brown pour with a creamy two finger beige head with great retention and crazy lacing. This nose is very malt forward with lots of sweet roasty coffee notes along with hints of vanilla, mocha, caramel, brown sugar, and some subtle hazelnut. The taste follows suit with lots of fresh roasty coffee up front along with hints of hazelnut, vanilla, caramel, brown sugar, cocoa, and brown bread. The mouthfeel is thick and creamy with above average carbonation and a bittersweet, slightly dry finish. The ABV is very well hidden. Overall, a very flavorful and easy drinking interpretation.

This is a great beer and my only regret is that I could not try it prior to the expiration date running out. It makes for a perfect winter beer and I wish that they would make it into a regular beer.

Olfactory: Unfortunately, because this beer was not stored in a refrigerator the smell retains positive coffee and toffee smells but does not have the power it likely once had.

Appearance: This beer looks like a heartwarming winter beer and has a head that excites. If you don't pour it out very gently then it will spill out of a standard pub glass.

Taste: Silky smooth with everything that you would want from beer that went through bean, coffee, chocolate, and oak barrel brewing. First, let's just appreciate the labor that went into this one time production beer. Next, imagine those flavors.

Lastly - go out into some snow, maybe snowboard, ski or go for a slay ride, and appreciate that the biggest mistake made by the Sixpoint brewery was releasing such a wintery porter in the middle of summer when it could not be appreciated for the atmosphere that it provides.

Poured from a can into a stemless wineglass. Best before 7/10/13 and this is 11/29/13 so I'll keep that in mind.

A- Pours a nice dark coffee black that has the slightest amount of light coming through on the edges. A small light tan head that dissipated to a thin film. Seems to have some thick viscosity to it with sound and look of the pour.

S- Getting a lot of caramel and salt water taffy with some molasses. The ABV is definitely there. Coffee seems like it might be fading a bit.

T- Coffee really coming through more on the taste. Then a big alcohol flavor and on the back comes the salt water taffy and molasses.

M- Nice full. thick viscosity. Surprisingly crisp, could that be from the lager yeast used in a Baltic porter?

O- Got a 4-pack of this for 4 dollars on sale. Noticed it's best by date was 5 months ago but figured I'd give it a shot. The alcohol seems to be taking over and would like to try fresher some time. Still, as it is, a nice beer with complexity.

From the can labeled Best Before 10 Jul 2013. I am sampling this on November 27, 2013, which is beyond that date. Good looking Porter-like pour of dark brown with a moderately lingering beige head.

The aroma is chocolate and coffee mainly. But there is an interesting cherry-like ester going on as well. Mild earthy hops. OK sweetness. No booze for 10%.

The body is creamy and a bit better than medium.

The taste tends to play down the coffee and chocolate aromas of the nose in favor of a dark malt, earthy, fruity character. Oh yes, the chocolate and coffee do not disappear entirely but they don't present themselves as much in the flavor as they do in the aroma. 10% ABV and the alcohol is not detected. Decent Porter.

Poured from a 12 oz can into a Brewer's Art goblet with a moderate hand. Bottom of the can is marked Bestby10Jul2013. Yeah... but this is in a can and 10% ABV. I think we're going to be ok, here.

A: Mostly opaque, very dark coffee bean brown with a ruby tint. 1 finger of light caramel head with a bit of rocky depth. Good retention. Lots of lacing. Very fine looking brew.

S: Rather sweet, roasted malt. Brown sugar. Toffee. Dark cherry. A unique scent I can't put my finger on... Maybe it's the ancient Roman beans or what-not. Not a whole lot of coffee or chocolate to my surprise.

T: Nice, bittersweet coffee/chocolate up front and throughout. The hops gradually increase their presence and complete the dry, fairly bitter finish at the back of the mouth. Roasted malts and dark chocolate. There is a burnt sugar presence, but the beer is not nearly as sweet as the smell would suggest. Coffee/chocolate is dominant, as expected, and of rather good quality. Overall, taste is a bit one-note (or maybe two-note is more appropriate), but it plays well.

M: Moderate carbonation with a slight prickliness. The body is fairly full, which makes it a bit smoother.

O: Tasty brew, especially if you dig the union of coffee, beer and chocolate. The coffee and chocolate accents are very nice. I do enjoy how the taste transitions from a slight sweeter, coffee/chocolate bitterness at the beginning to an assertive, somewhat piney, hop bitterness at the end. Cool beer.

Roman Beans, eh?

3Beans has a body the darkest of browns like a Nubian Queen. A mocha head forms immediately and is instantly creamy coming to a rest with a thick, sticky ring and a puffy floating cap. The cap leaves sheet lacing caked down the glass with each drink. This is a damn fine looking beer, rich, velvety, and dense.

The aroma is bold. Lightly roasted malts are the foundation. Dark, bittersweet cocoa is pretty heavy handed. I'm not quite sure what Roman beans smell like but there is an earthy quality floating around in the periphery. Freshly ground coffee emerges, and grows, as this one warms becoming one of the dominant factors. Not bad but a little run together.

Mild roast with a touch of lactic sweetness that's reminiscent of heavy cream are first and foremost in the flavor. Coffee comes along mid palate and pushes through to the finish, it's well integrated. Bittersweet chocolate, an earthy component (I will assume this is from the Roman Beans), and a hodgepodge of dark berries bring up the rear. The flavor comes together better than the aroma.

The weight feels appropriate as it hits the tongue but becomes a little more viscous and sticky than I'd like. It's not overpoweringly sweet but there is a little too much stick, in my opinion. The feel is silky though and there's a touch of roasty bitterness on the swallow.

I've had my eye on this beer since the day I'd first seen it. I'm not sure why being as Sixpoint has never shown me much in the past. 3Beans falls in line with the rest of Sixpoints offerings I've sampled, it's good but with the selection today I won't be picking it up again. A four pack is more than enough for me.

Can: Poured a dark clear brown color beer with a generous light brown foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of sublime coffee notes with well-balanced caramelized malt notes. Taste is also dominated by great coffee beans notes with almost no astringency or overly dry notes. Malt backbone is solid with good caramelized notes and no overly dry roasted malt notes with light residual sugar notes. Body is lighter then I was expecting for a 10% ABV beer with great carbonation and no apparent alcohol. I find it hard to distinguish the porter and thought this was more akin to a strong brown ale with loads of coffee.
