Poured from the can a deep mahagony with well defined half finger light tan colored head,a little lighter in color than most I have had from the style.Aromas of dark roast coffee,bitter chocolate,and earth,it seems quite dry and no alcohol sweetness.Starts out with deep coffee roast with underlying unsweetened chocolate,mild molasses-like sweetness that quickly gets hit with a healthy dose of piney hops in the finish.This is a hopped up Baltic Porter,one of the dryer and complex of the style I have had,it's just a little sharp in the feel but this is pretty damn good.

On the nose it smells oddly like a bonfire; the oak, cocoa and some very roasty malts come through with might. Along with this melody is earthy coffee.

This beer definitely takes some time to breathe. I was struggling with it at first, its flavors and taste were very reserved but with some time it opens up.

Upfront on the palate it is full of coffee, chocolate and roasted malt. As it slides through the mouth the coffee comes out a bit more and as it progresses towards the back of the mouth it turns into liquid chocolate with a touch of oak and vanilla. The finish is bitter and boozy.

The mouthfeel is absurdly thick and creamy, absolutely amazing.

Well balanced and not as sweet as I expected. A really nice beer.

Pours a semi-opaque dark brown with a fluffy tan head. Smells like the inside of my coffee bean hopper. Yum.

Rich notes of cocoa, french pressed coffee, and dark berry skins. Snappy hops. Alcohol is huge, maybe a bit too huge. I might sound like a diabetic saying this but I could have used a touch more malt. Or -- a decrease in alcohol. This is a bit too boozy. I really like the overall flavor, though, and find besides the alcohol, it has a nice hop balance. The booze, coupled with the bitter coffee-wearing-a-hops dress finish, is a bit harsh on the palate.

Medium-full bodied. Dry, prickly finish. And as for the identified style here on BA, I first thought this was maybe an Imperial Brown of some ilk.

Sixpoint is solid and so is this brew. I don't know if I'd buy more than one at a time, though. One is probably enough for now.

12oz skinny can poured into a Sixpoint resin snifter.

The beer pours a nice, deep cola brown color, almost black. A big, cloudy, frothy bone colored head sits atop the beer, about 2 and a half fingers high that has moderate retention and leaves some decent lacing behind. Intense coffee on the nose, lots of roast with some dark chocolate behind it, touches of vanilla and lots of thick, rich, dark grain that is quite sweet. Lot's of bitter, roasted coffee and dark chocolate on the tongue, very intense, a bit harsh at times with sweet vanilla, oaky flavors that bring out the malted grain. The acidic finish is there, but it clashes a bit with the sweet flavors. The body is lively, bubbly, carbonated well with a lightly acidic finish that is fairly smooth.

Verdict: A very intense beer from Sixpoint and possibly too much for me. This is really a palate killer when I wasn't expecting it to be. I'd hoped for a soft, sweet, silky beer that highlights the adjuncts but got something that was punishing and brutal.

Thanks to Momar42 for the 12 oz can! Poured into a Duvel tulip.

A: Pours a very dark brown color. The head is a two finger mocha shade. I'm fairly impressed with the retention given the gravity, and the lacing left down the glass is beautiful and consistent.

S: There's a good amount of chocolate and coffee on the nose. The coffee seems to take on a hazelnut quality to it; always a good thing here. A bit of booze come through to the nose, as well.

T: Alcohol is far more prevalent on the flavor profile, unfortunately. Most of the booziness is concentrated on the opening flavors. The finish, however, sees a surge of lightly roasted nuttiness that I enjoy somewhat, along with some more heavily roasted coffee. Some umami notes tie this together - actually, a lot of umami notes tie this together. Other notes of hazelnut and toasted oak appear, giving it some good complexity. Ultimately, I think the savory qualities are a bit too strong for their own good.

M: There's good creaminess within the texture, but it's a bit more carbonated than I like from such a creamy feel. More damning is the fact that it doesn't go down particularly easily, likely from the prevalent alcohol.

O: I think this could have kicked ass if it were, say, 8% and just a touch sweeter (not cloying, though). As it stands, it feels too much like hard work drinking it. Not bad at all, though - certainly a unique take on a 'coffee and chocolate' brew.

This doesn't fall into the traditional baltic porter category for me. The chocolate and coffee jump into things and mesh with the typical characteristics in a pretty good fashion. It all seems to fight for dominance though never wins. Feel is good. Drinkability is good. I can dig it.

Thanks to st9647v3 for this slender 12oz can.

I'm always a coffee beer skeptic. They sound great in principle, but often remind me of stale coffee. How will this fare?

First of all, I love the can. I like cans generally, and this slim profile even more. It's pretty in the glass, too; swirly like a nitro beer, with a tight tan head. It smells like expensive chocolate and stale coffee. And that's the rub. I would have loved this without the coffee. There are decent caramel notes in there, too.

The taste backs the smell 100%. It's full and sweet and bitter and full of good chocolate, and doused with stale coffee. Heavy sigh. I would love this beer without the coffee. I still like it, but still.

EDIT - 09/2013: Had it again, and found the coffee to be much better, resulting in a better beer overall. Updating scores to reflect.

Poured from a skinny tall boy can into a Samuel Adams perfect pint glass.

A: Darker brown color with light escaping from the edges. Normally aggressive pour leads to a full two finger head that's latte foam colored. Very good head retention and the lacing clings to the side like glue.

S: Full flavored coffee (not burnt), espresso, cocoa and some grain. Excellent nose.

T: Better on the tongue than on the nose. This tastes like a perfect iced mocha made with cocoa instead of chocolate. Lots of espresso, some vanilla and a touch of bready yeast.

M: Perfectly carbonated, sharp finish. Good mouthfeel.

O: A superb brew. I went into this not expecting a ton but hoping to really like it. I was supremely impressed.

Poured out of a 12 oz can into my tulip.

A – Deep brown to black on the pour. Huge two ringers of bubbly, frothy tan head that left nice rings down the glass and had good retention.

S – Very nice chocolate smell. Coffee, vanilla and mocha.

T – Strong coffee flavors like an espresso. Much lighter chocolate taste then the smell would suggest. Light notes of vanilla throughout. Caramel flavors at the end and a deep breath of alcohol lingers after each taste. You can really feel the ABV. Also finishes with a nice roastiness, a touch of smoke and a bite of malty bitterness.

M – Medium bodied. A touch thin on the palate though it does have a creaminess to it.

O – Very nice tasty brew. The ABV is present but not overwhelming. It has a nice complex taste and warms nicely. Definitely a sipper.
