12oz thin can. Best before 7/10/13 (surely a serious overstatement, Sixpoint)

Tasted side-by-side with Sierra Nevada's Narwhal. Perhaps an attempt to compare an imperial stout to a Baltic porter.

A: The lighter of the two, some light penetrates the tulip, revealing a dark brown hue topped off with a off-white crown that leaves some good lacing.

S: Serious toasty coffee aromas courtesy of legendary roaster Stumptown.

T: Sweet chocolate notes on the tongue, follow by the coffee. Great balance between the two.

M: Perfectly carbonated, this porter coats the palate with a nice, dry coffee feel. It is very smooth. Could it be the use of the Romano beans (the 3rd bean)?

O: A great porter that would have survived any trip across the Baltic Sea, and one that would have pleasantly surprised the recipients whether in Sweden, Finland, Russia, Estonia et. al.

As much as I liked it, I think I'm still partial to the Imperial/Double Stout style a la Narwhal. (967 characters)

A: Pours dark brown with a thick, beige head. Beautiful color that's noticeable when held up to light. Light lacing.

S: Mild coffee aroma, and hint of something unique that I'm assuming is the romano beans.

T: Coffee dominates the taste profile, with some warming from the alcohol. Chocolate/oak adds complexity, but is mostly hidden.

M: Warm, thin body. Medium mouthfeel.

Overall, the beer was better as it warmed up. Complex flavor, but mostly coffee and alcohol. I would have liked a little more of a prominent chocolate flavor, and a bigger body. I'd like to try it on tap. All in all, a good beer. (607 characters)

12oz can poured into a snifter. Best before July 10, 2013.

A: Pours a dark brown with a 1.5 finger light tan head. Leaves some nice lacing on the sides of the glass. Light gets through about an inch of this beer.

S: Immediately I can get the coffee from this beer. It has an authentic coffee ground aroma. Can also get some roasty malts and dark fruits. The bitterness from the coffee melds with the hops.

T: As the aroma lead you to believe there is a lot of coffee in the taste. Also a decent chocolate flavor. Hops are slightly noticeable on the backend balancing out the beer. I think the oak helps mellow out some of the booze.

M: Medium bodied with a slightly thin mouthfeel. A fair amount of carbonation. Is certainly warming but not too hot.

Overall a real tasty new brew from Sixpoint. Liking it better this second time, maybe my I expected too much going into it the first time. A little pricey but worth a try. (931 characters)

Bought the 4-pack at $14.99. So i am expecting a huge or an excellent beer.

Poured from the thin 12-oz can into a snifter. Excellent about two finger thick tan colored head that stays really well as a thin layer. Good retention. Thin dark brown colored while pouring and black and opaque inside the glass. Decent to excellent sticky lacing.

A coffee burst opens up and fills the nose when it is poured into the snifter. Though coffee is the dominant aroma, the strength withers off. Ground coffee. A lot of roasted malts come through as well. No booze. Low to none hop aroma. Strength is moderate to just about strong.

Taste is excellent as well. A lot of bitterness coming up from raw ground coffee and burnt up roasted malts. No booze come through but you know you are drinking something strong as the beer kicks in really well with first sip. A nice Russian Imperial Stout like taste. Finish is dry and very bitter. Coffee flavor is decent but not something i was expecting. I was expecting a lot more coffee than i tasted and smelled.

Mouth feel is medium. Moderate carbonation. A good warmth due to alcohol. Charred and burnt malts along with ground coffee provide a bit of bitter astringency.

Overall the brew is good but not $4 good. Should have been 10 -12 $ for a 4-pack. Packs the punch. Excellent beer to open on a weekend morning and to drink in lieu of Coffee. (1,382 characters)

Wan't overly impressed with Sixpoint's 3 bean. If I was blindfoldeded would of said a simple brown ale.
The beer was a desent chestnut brown in color with a smallish beige head. Carbonation could be seen around the edges.
Aroma was sutle roasted malts and cocoa nibs. Coffee aroma was absent.
Taste had a nice roasted malt taste with hints of coffee and nibs. There is a husky bitterness that crosses the palette. Finishes dry and clean really.
Feels and tastes thin and washed out for a baltic porter.
Pretty good but also pretty lame. (536 characters)

A-bslsck with a the tan head

S-smells like fresh roasted coffee. There is a hint of chocolate but I am impressed at how fresh it smells.

T-comes in similar to the taste of coffee over the smell of coffee, as we all know coffee tastes different (worse) than it smells. It's still an awesome flavor with just a touch of cocoa to it. It sure is tasty overall, tastes closer to real coffee than most beers I've had.

M-medium crisp carbonation with a dry finish

O-this is just a great beer. Baltic porter? Maybe not, tastes more like a strong English stout. There is hardly any abv in the taste, it's so smooth. I bought this not understanding what it was, thinking maybe it was an average brown ale, but I was completely surprised and satisfied with this beer. I suggest your try this if you see this. (803 characters)

12 oz can poured into a snifter

A- Pours very dark brown, Almost pitch black in the glass. A one finger of a ligher khaki colored head. Some alcohol legs on this one.

S- A little coffee, some roasted malt, a bit of cocoa. A robust and roasty smelling brew.

T- A nice coffee up front. A massive roasty character that takes over the palate. A bit of a dark and very dry chocolate. This beer really smells organic and fresh. There is also a bit of a hop bitterness in this beer. A very slight crisp wood character to this brew. A spicy and earthy hop note. A dry roasted finish. A somewhat clean beer that is well balanced and blended.

M- A big beer. Very roasty and dry. Not a very heavy body. Its nicely balanced and the alcohol is just strong enough to where its not noticeable.

O- This is a great beer. A unique and well made beer thats sure to please stout lovers. (873 characters)

I had this on tap at The Pour House in Westmont, NJ. In retrospect I should have started with it instead of finishing. It has an extremely heavy flavor and feel. Coupled with the higher alcohol content it was probably poor timing for me. It tastes very good and I would have given it a better rating, but I guess it was just too much for me at the time. (353 characters)

First had: on tap at Capone's, Norristown, PA

Served in a Leffe chalice (whatever), dark brown-black pour, topped off with a nice creamy cap of tan head; good retention, stratifying lacing. In the nose, dark malts, coffee, cocoa, very smooth all over. More of the same in the taste, more emphasis on sweet, less on roasty/bitter, dark malts, coffee (very nice), cocoa, caramel, cream. Smooth mouthfeel, medium-full body, full of flavor, and higher ABV extremely well-hidden. Great beer overall. Too bad it's a one-off. (519 characters)

Deep brown with a glint of ruby. Thin, but creamy head. Unfortunately that was the best part of the beer. I find the nose to have almost an artificial coffee smell (im sure they used proper coffee though) to me it smells young and undeveloped with very little roast character or astrigency. There are notes of toffee hard candy and faintly talcum powder and fusels. The beer is far too watery for my liking and a little too lively on the carbonation. the coffee and chocolate notes are there but the fall off the tongue too quickly. There is a little more astringency to the coffe than I had anticipated, which I like but this beer finishes too soon. Not much hopping comes through and the finish is a tad cloying. Not bad, but not what I expected for a 10% coffee, chocolate beer. Also not sure what the romano bean is doing. It just says adds complexity in the box so... (872 characters)

Clear chestnut brown with a dark khaki head that is quite impressive. Garnet highlights when held up. Decent lacing here and there. A bouquet of coffee and roasted grains greet my waiting nose, with healthy chocolate notes layered in the sweetness of light alcohol, mild cherries and burnt molasses. A hint of the oak gives faint vanilla. Taste is all the nose would have you believe and more. A double espresso with a mochachino chaser. The oak tinged cherry and vanilla flexing nicely. Some burnt sugary sweetness that flows into a healthy charcoal and hop bitterness in the finish. Feel is sublime with a rich full velvety creaminess. Carbonation is just the right proportion to keep it highly drinkable. A great winter beer that I would love any time of the year. (767 characters)

12 oz can, stamped on the bottom with "Best before 10Jul2013"

appears almost black but not quite. ruby highlights when held up to the light. khaki colored head that hangs around. nice aroma of black coffee, just a touch of chocolate. taste is well balanced between bitter roastiness and mild sweetness. medium body, higher carbonation. I think lower carbonation could have improved it.

12oz can into Captain Lawrence tulip. Huge thanks to BA mob2332 for giving me a can of this beer!

*Special note: beer brewed with Stumptown's overpriced, overrated coffee.

Appearance: Big tan rootbeer float head. Pours black. Looks good.

Smell: Definitely get the fruitiness mentioned in other reviews. Not much coffee. Cola-like effervescence.

Taste: Mm, I remembered from Gorilla Warfare that Sixpoint knows how to construct a unique, good coffee beer. More of the same here; great coffee-mimicking astringency on the back end, cutting through the dark chocolate, oaky vanilla and slight fruitiness. Vanilla note is not in your face, but it's substantial enough to contribute a lot. Not very much outright coffee flavor, unlike Gorilla Warfare (though Gorilla's coffee is better than Stumptown's so this is a win/win in a way). Alcohol well hidden.

Well above average robust porter. Oak was a great idea; doesn't dominate, and provides a great counterpoint to the chocolate and roasted malt bitterness.

Mouthfeel: Full side of medium bodied. Nice creaminess, almost milky. Dry finish matches the flavors.

Overall: Solid beer from Sixpoint. Doesn't really hit the spot for people who want a strong coffee / beer balance in coffee porters, but luckily I'm not one of those people. Not necessarily a home run, but there's many elements that are superbly done, and the overall experience is satisfying. (1,408 characters)

Pours a nice, reddish tinted dark brown, fluffy tannish tinted head. Smell of bitter roast and ground cocoa bean and espresso bean, light nuttyness, mild sweetness and some berry notes. Taste dials down the scent a bit, notes of dry, bitter, heavy roasted coffee and cocoa, mild berry notes, earthy and grainy, dry oak, some vanilla, minimal sweetness. Fuller side of medium, dry and lingering fruitiness. Solid selection, smoother cocoa and coffee notes preferred but makes this interesting. (492 characters)

Poured from the can into a snifter. Served at 55 degrees.

Pours dark, almost black with a light-colored, thick, foamy head that slowly dissipates to a thin ring around the edge of the glass. Nose is coffee and a sweetness that reminds me of Chinese red bean paste. Mouthfeel is thick, but carbonated.

Primary taste is dark and roasted, with a mildly astringent aftertaste. The coffee is not as prominent here, but there's a spicy sweetness reminiscent of cinnamon toast. Further into the glass the red bean taste is more prominent and the chocolate starts to peek through.

Overall, this is quite good. It's atypical of the style, but quite interesting. With the possible exception of Resin, this is the best canned Sixpoint I've had. (737 characters)

Poured from can into a snifter glass

Appearance –Pours a deep-deep brown color with a small one finger tan colored head. When held up to the light hints of ruby red can be seen shinning through the brew. The head of the beer fades quite fast leaving a small film on the surface and only a very light level of lacing on the sides of the glass.

Smell – The aroma is strongest of a roasted malt and coffee smell. Mixed with these smells are some lighter notes of a toffee sweetness as well as a bit of cocoa and an earthy hop.

Taste –The taste begins with strong roasted malt, cocoa and some coffee flavors. There is a light sweetness of a caramel and vanilla flavor in the beginning of the taste. The sweeter flavors begin to fade more as the taste advances however with some flavors of oak and some light nutty flavors taking their place. Toward the end, the coffee flavor intensifies and is joined by some hop flavors of an earthy variety as was detected in the nose. These flavors, with the lessening of the sweet, end up leaving a roasted and bitter flavor to linger on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – For a 10 % abv brew the body of the beer was rather thin in terms of its thickness and chewiness while the carbonation level was a tad on the higher side. Neither the thin body of the beer or the higher carbonation level suited the flavors or the style of the brew well.

Overall – Not likely one I would go too again. A little too bitter and astringent at the end with the taste and the feel a bit off for me. OK, but for the cost not really worth it. (1,562 characters)

Poured from a can into a snifter, the beer appears thin on the pour, with a chestnut highlighted dark brown coloring and a clingy, frothy, off-white head that starts around an inch and slowly settles into a filmy coating. Aromas of creamy, smooth, blended and balanced vanilla and chocolate, with an undertone of bitterness from both chocolate and coffee. Very well blended and complimentary aromas as you consume. Flavors of rich, dark roasted coffee and bitter cocoa nibs right off the bat. Wow...this is damn tasty! Creamy backbone of vanilla and oak support the rich and bitter forefront attack on your tastebuds, and there is a strong, solid, boozey tail-end flavor that bleeds into the aftertaste. Some earthy and woody highlights help to add depth to the overall character of the beer. Creamy and slightly boozey aftertaste, with a lingering mocha charateristic. The lighter body lends itself to a clean, slightly dry finish. Great beer. Well crafted and very well balanced. Bravo! (988 characters)

Straight pour from a 12oz “slimboy” can to a Cigar City snifter; freshness date of July 10, 2013 printed in black ink on the underside of the can (“BESTBEFORE10JUL2013 05280K+” or something along those lines).

Appearance (4.25): Very nice looking pour, with two fingers of cappuccino-colored foam topping a largely clear, kind of cola-colored body (or maybe root beer, something darker). Moderate retention with some pretty great lacing, showing off thin collars, scattered legs, and a couple sheets of lace.

Smell (4.0): The nose boasts a really nice, cold-brewed coffee aroma and unsweetened chocolate; the malt body is really very understated in the nose. The chocolate is not the sweet/bitter confection you normally think of, though—this is very earthy, with almost a fruity character.

Taste (4.25): Pretty much nailed it. All coffee (bitter, but light-roast and kind of floral/fruity) and that earthy chocolate character mixing with a relatively light malt base, more toasty and brown than charred and black. But there’s a pretty notable citrus zest-kind of bitterness in the finish, maybe the hop character? Adds a weirdly fruity dimension to it all. Alcohol is largely hidden, but it definitely has a warming feel to it. The malt has a dark, sweet, bready character to it, like cocoa powder was mixed into a banana bread batter; bit of a cola-ish aftertaste follows through with its own wave before the finish. Whatever is going on here, I like it. Really opens up an interesting balance between coffee and fruitiness as it warms.

Mouthfeel (4.25): Creamy carbonation that prickles modestly on the finish but foams up nicely going down, complementing a lighter-feeling body with a distinct creaminess to it. Very interesting balance being walked here.

Overall (4.0): This beer is unique, I’d say. It offers a very interesting balance between coffee, chocolate (but chocolate in a way that feels different), malt, and some other aspects as well. The alcohol is noticeably present, but suitable and welcome for the size and character of the beer. But what’s really great is that this beer really opens up into something different and thoroughly enjoyable as it warms. Flavors re-arrange, the feel transforms, and it just becomes something different and definitely tasty. Recommended. (2,315 characters)

Clouded mahogany pour with a crop of lightly tanned head resting on top. Fades into a thicker film with spotty patches of lacing all over the glass.

Cocoa powder and hints of dark chocolate in the nose. Coffee beans, roasted dark malts and a touch of vanilla with a soft warmth.

Softly sweet up front with cocoa and dark chocolate. Hint of bitterness with roasted coffee beans leading into the thick malt backbone. Light hint of oak, a little nutty, hint of vanilla and caramel. Finishes with some lingering coffee acidity and alcohol warmth.

Fuller medium body, well carbonated, chewy and sticky on the palate. This is easily one of the better canned Sixpoint offerings of late, and I really wouldn't have pegged this at 10% abv. (766 characters)

Poured from a can into a tulip. I've been looking forward to trying it.

A- Dark brown, with a tan 1-finger head.

S- Coffee dominates the aroma, with a bit of chocolate and molasses.

T/M- The primary taste is of coffee and bitter roast malt. Chocolate is moderate but comes out more as it warms. The beer gets way better as it warms in general, actually. Not much on the hop side. However, throughout there is a burnt bitterness. The overall effect is like a mocha made with scorched coffee, and the burnt flavor really hurts the drinkability. More of a sweet balance comes out as it warms, but not completely. Body's rather thin for the style.

O- Not a disaster, but it doesn't quite work for me. I won't miss it when it's gone, and that's coming from a major Sixpoint fan. (780 characters)

Served in a pint glass.

Appearance: A deep dark brown that comes off almost opaque but it definitely isn't, the off white tan ead is sublte considering my hard pour maybe 1/4" dropping quickly.

Smell: can you say coffee? because thqat is what this beer is about. Smelling it makes me want to swallow the whole glass. it is light but it's a smell you won't forget.

Taste: What a rich porter, almost feels like a borderline stout but much more smoother with its heavy coffee feel. Like coffee without sugar you can instantly feel the bitterness, but like as off they added cream to it it comes off so smooth.

Mouth: Medium, with a bitter feel at the end that is almost perfect. Has a slight slight dry finish to it but don't stress it. This is what makes beer, beer!

Overall: I first have to thank Mike at the Superstar Beverage (Deer Park, NY) for convincing me to get this gem, this beer is incredible. I normally resist to grab porters just because of the fact I prefer stouts but this one is a strict win/win situation. It costs a notch more than most Sixpoint beers but it will definitely not disappoint. Salud! (1,123 characters)

A: Very dark brown, but not quite black yet. Still a little translucent. Forms a moderate sized tan colored head that leaves a lot of lacing on the way down.

S: Aroma is pleasant, but a bit muted. Caramel, roasted malts, chocolate, black coffee, and a light sweetness.

T: Taste is much like the aroma. Roasted malts and coffee seem to dominate with a blend of bitter-sweet and milk chocolate. Mild very clean sweetness, almost sugar-like. Then an acrid wooden flavor on the finish.

M: On the heavier side of medium. Weak for the style. Medium carbonation. Mild bitterness, but a bit of odd chemical astringency on the finish.

O: A decent beer, though one with a few flaws. Personally, I find it to be more of a flavored brown ale than a Baltic Porter. Good flavors, though the beer seems to have pulled too much from the barrel. (836 characters)

On tap at When Pigs Fly. In a snifter the beer was a very dark brown color with a medium-sized cafe au lait head. There were sheets of lace.

Primarily coffee aroma, but also some chocolate.

Strong coffee/espresso taste. Dark chocolate. They complimented each other really well.

Great beer with real depth. The chocolate kept the coffee from being too bitter. Another one of those easy-drinking beers that you need to be careful of, given it's high ABV. (455 characters)

A: The beer is very dark amber in color and has a light amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a finger high tan head that died down and left a thin layer of bubbles on the surface, a thick collar around the edge of the glass, and a coating of bubbles down the sides of the glass.
S: Light to moderately strong aromas of coffee beans are present in the nose, which also has some hints of chocolate.
T: Like the smell, the taste has lots of rich flavors of espresso beans, but there's surprisingly not that much bitterness due to a good balance of cocoa flavors to provide some underlying sweetness. There are some slight hints of roasted malts and faint hints of alcohol in the finish.
M: It feels rather medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: Considering its strength, this beer is very easy to drink because the alcohol is masked very well (except for some hints of it towards the finish). I really like the balance between the coffee and chocolate because it really seems to provide a perfect mix of bitterness and sweetness. (1,069 characters)

Pour dark brown with a brownish creamy head. The head wasn't very long lasting, perhaps less than a minute.
The aroma was typical of a chocolate or coffee porter/stout, but not as pronounced. There was a hint of citrus in the bouquet.
The first taste was light, semi-rich , mostly in chocolate, but as the beer went down, I could detect the coffee. This was also fairly carbonated for a porter/stout.
The second and third sips were the same, started with chocolate ending with coffee... Cant figure out where the third bean came into play.
This is a definite porter/stout for those that do not like the real heavy almost zero carbonated stouts (which I love)... Still I would have this one again.
I'd like to compare this porter with several well known Russian Imperial Stouts. More carbonated and lighter then the heavy stouts

The more sips I had, the more pronounced the chocolate was. Real smooth and lingering.

Snowy night here in the Northeast. Just finished with my snowblower and thought I would treat myself to some stouts. The 3Bean was the first I had. No question about more coffee this time around. Everything was almost perfect. Very soft and big in my mouth hitting every sense there. Aftertaste was just as it started, a nice soft chocolate but mucho cafe stout/porter. After I tasted this one, I went on to the next (which will be seen updated) (1,371 characters)
