Ok, I wasn't expecting much in the way of a beer selection on my recent trip to Grand Forks, but BA led me in the right direction. There are now 2 location in GF, the newest is on 20th ave s between Washington and Columbia, the opposite end of town from Gateway. The new one has a bigger selection of beer and wine. This place was clean and well layed out making it easy to find things. I started off looking at the loose bottle selection, the standard Belgian (Chimay, Tremens) and German (Weihenstephan, Hopf) Corona. The highlight was Rouges DBL Dead Guy, yum. Over in the 6-12 pack case I was pleased to to find a good selection from Bells Brewing from MI, Boulder Brewing, Avery, Leinenkugle, Summit Brewing and Schells Brewings large selection. These were great to see, coming from the west coast most of these can't be had so it was a great treat. I didn't care about the prices but they seen to be reasonable. The staff was nice and friendly. This is a stop I will make every time I go back.

Pretty much the only place to find craft beer in this BMC wasteland. Was able to find Bells, Summit and Goose Island stuff not available in CO, so it wasn't a total loss.

Good ole' Happy Harry's, there to save me from oblivion when temporarily located in ... er, oblivion.
Found myself in Grand Forks for the night, brother went to UND so know of a few places around town. Happy Harry's was one of them, and so stopped by after work to pick up my start of the night. Nice decent place opposite Mecca... er, Ralph Engelstad Arena off hwy 2 on the north side of town.
Good and decent folks run the place, didn't ask much of them but they were naturally nice and helpful. Selection for round here is great, for a guy from the city decent and of good quality. Had some Belgians, a healthy selection of craft, refrigerated singles, mix 6 shelf, in all a good selection to be had. Saw some Scotch Silly, made me smile and think back to my recent trip to Belgium. Always good when a store in Grant Forks Nodak can remind you of Belgium.

Let us start with the positives. This is the best bottle shop on the I-29 between Winnipeg and Fargo and if you're looking for a spot to get some US craft when on a short trip down from Winnipeg. They have a small selection of singles for $2 or $10.50/6 organized by type. There is decent selection of refrigerated bombers with Rogue, Boulevard Smokestack, Summit, New Belgium, Boulder, Abita and many others... 12 packs and 6s are also in the fridge, and some imports are found including Rochefort 6, 8 & 10 ($7 though?). Service was attentive, though lacking in knowledge and fixed their mistake quickly when I brought it to their attention.
Now the negatives. I found a Summit IPA expired 10/10 unrefrigerated. I can't imagine that will turn people to craft, old IPAs. The selection of imports was dismal, and primarily the stuff you can find even in sports bars. The BMC was huge, and the craft was an obvious afterthought. Compared to my shops back home in Winnipeg where I decry the lack of selection, Happy Harry's made me want for home... The only thing thy had going on was way more US craft selection than I am used to seeing at home (but a fraction of bottle shops in Minneapolis).
I am glad it is there as it is the best of a bad lot, I would just like it to be better...

I went to college in Grand Forks so I became acquainted with Happy Harry's as my first bottle shop. At the time I only cared about my Miller Lite, and they had that, and lots of it, but it wasn't until much later than I appreciated what it had and offered to a Beer Advocate.
The store is large, well organized, and has a nice atmosphere for browsing. Prices are pretty typical, and the selection is as good as it gets in North Dakota, though that doesn't say much.
You should be able to track down Goose Island, Bells, Boulevard, Deschutes, Rogue, Sam Adams, Sierra Nevada, and your typical Belgian Fair, but don't expect much else.
The staff is friendly (it is North Dakota after all) but I've never really gotten much help and I've been looked at like an alien more than once when asking a brew-centric question.
You won't go home empty handed. If you are ever stuck in the cold grip of a South Canada winter this place will come through in a pinch.

Great store for Beer/Liquor, always remember to check whats on sale. The store usually has 1-2 premium beers on sale per month. They have plenty of great imports, but nothing too extravagant. All of my beer is bought exclusively at this store, its the best location in town. The prices are fairly reasonable, once again pay attention to sales. Also, if you ever have a request for a new beer, drop them an email on their website, my buddy asked for Orval last fall, and 2 weeks later they had it in store.

Happy Harry's is really the only place I've been in Grand Forks for Liquor. That said, It's got a lot of things that a boy from Winnipeg would want and can't get in Canada. The stock was pretty standard as far as micros go, but it was good. American Breweries that were well represented were: Sierra Nevada, Rogue, Redhook, Big Sky, Sam Adams, Boulder Beer Co., Summit, and a few others I can't recall. Import Highlights were Rochefort, Westmalle, Orval, Sam Smith's, Ayinger, and lots of Unibroues. The only complaint I had about this place is the layout seemed a bit confusing, with Micros on opposite ends of the store making me have to walk back and forth a few times while I was making the hard decisions about what to bring back to Canada. Other than that, a decent shopping experience, and one I'll do again in the future.
