I've been going to the Green's on Piney Grove Rd. for quite some time now. Wes and Joseph have really worked hard over the years to transform this store into what it is today. They've got a growler station with eight taps which rotate often and tend to include a few rare kegs a week. They like to have brewery reps "take over" the station and host special events frequently as well, which they tend to sweeten with "double punches" on frequent growler fill cards. They also have a Randall (3.0) they pull out from time to time to put an interesting twist on the classics... sometimes it's organic whole cone hops that were grown locally in Columbia, sometimes it's Maraschino cherries and orange slices... these guys are the good kind of crazy.

The service at this store and the prices (almost always lowest in town/the state) are what brought me here years ago. The service and ever-growing solid selection are what have kept me. Barring recent distributor issues which are outside of Green's control, the guys at Piney Grove succeed at bringing in new domestic and international (particularly Belgian) brews as well as keeping the classics well stocked. Kudos to Wes and Joseph! If you live in the Midlands or happen to be passing through, make time to check out the Piney Grove Green's!

Reasonable prices/selection!

The staff here is pretty knowledgeable and helpful although I caught some lip from the Wine guy at the growler station just giving me a hand, at one time...but thats another story.

Bring cash or disclaim your card is debit for the cash prices at the register.

Usually there is at least 1 or 2 good offerings at the growler station for quart to half-gallon fills and usually are reasonably priced.

There is a cold cooler for the green's on assembly street where much import beer is located, also the premiums, and the piney grove store has a heap of goodness just on the sales floor @ room temp.

Everyone is willing to help, the seem to know much of the subject or they find whoever does.

Basically, you cant go wrong up in here give or take a dollar here and there at the surrounding beer stores...

hit em up!

This store was the saving grace of the last leg of returning from the beach in NC on our way to GA. The kid was screaming in the back seat and thanks to a couple of BA's (urbancaver and arvjunk) was able to get directions to this southern gem.
The atmosphere was of a alcoholics dream land. Rows and rows of booze. Mostly BMC stacked up in the front of the store with a wall of lined up coolers. After a second, I noticed the shelves of beer and skipped my way over to them.
At first glance my thoughts were "holy fudge, there is a lot of Imports, where the hell is the local loot" then I took a step past the first two aisles and saw the next three. There they were, 4 aisles of great stuff. I was able to find a beer for a trading partner that I have been trying to get for him for months. So very happy with the selection.
As far as service, didnt need any, didnt ask for any, didnt get any. The lady checking me out was courteous and pleasant. The prices to me were in line with other stores of this magnitude.
Will definitely seek this store out again whenever I am any where close to in the area.

Green's has been my go-to spot for all my beers needs since moving to SC 4 years ago. They have a very knowledgeable staff that can help direct you whatever style of beer you may be looking for. They have an awesome 8 growler station with taps rotating every week, the selection of bottled beer is massive and with new arrivals every week can sometimes be hard to keep up with. No matter where i have traveled I have not found a beer store that can match the selection or quality of people that Green's Piney Grove has to offer.

Can't really say enough about these guys. Love this place!

Located off the Piney Grove exit off of I-26, this is my favorite location and by far the best in Columbia.

Being a relative noob to the craft beer scene, Joseph and Wes have been extremely helpful in answering my questions, guiding me towards the beers I like, despite my lack of experience in beers to compare to.

They have a great wine selection, which takes up one side of their store, but the other side is all beer and it is a beautiful thing. Lots of singles, foreign and domestic, sixers, whatever you're looking for....really great selection for a beginner into this (almost too much) but it's really opened my eyes to several delicious beers and styles.

...but the gem here is the growler station. They have 4 taps currently (another station going in this week, I believe, bringing the total to 8 taps!!) and the kegs they get in are from local breweries, as well as all over the country, and cross the gamut in styles. I look forward to getting the weekly email from Joseph, letting us know what is coming to the growler station, what the "Rare Keg Of The Week" (that never makes it that long) is, and what swag or reps will be there. They have tastings on Thurs and Fri, and often have reps in the store as well. I've personally met with the Bells and Stone reps the last time they were there and enjoyed the chat.

Long story short, great location, awesome staff...if you're looking for beer, come in and ask for Wes or Joseph. They always seem to be there and are more than willing to help you out.

I have visited this Green's location a few times in the past while traveling through the Columbia area and just have never gotten around to giving them some review love! Great selection and I always seem to be able to knock a few beers off my wants list with each visit. Store is very clean and organized and they seem to employ a very knowledgeable staff. The local beer geeks have a hot spot in their backyard and I would recommend any out of towner's swinging through Columbia make a quick pit stop!

the guys at the store are awsome! Wes & Joseph are well versed in quality beer. They will steer you right every time & they strive to get us the good stuff. The growler station ROCKS! Now with tastings one thurs. & fri.
great selection of craft brews!
very well located, right off I-26 @ st. andrews exit. the traffic getting in at times is a mess though. thank goodness they have two pull ins on opposite sides of parking lot.
Keep up the good work guys! keep spreading the word of good craft beer in the midlands!
looking forward to the expansion on the growler station!

Easy access from I-26; this store sits on an unattractive parking lot almost on the interstate. Warehouse atmosphere.

This is by far the best Green's as far as beer selection I have ever been to, including 2 stores in Atlanta and one in Greenville SC.

In addition, they sell and fill growlers. About 4 taps but interesting and varied selections when I've checked.

Lots of variety in cold 6- and 12-packs in the back.

Huge international selection of singles, including many top 100 beers. Some BA and Rate Beer evaluations posted on the shelves. Nicely organized. Exceptionally friendly, helpful and knowledgeable worker there during my last visit.

This is my favorite store in Columbia. I visit here everytime I am in the area. They are one of the only retailers, maybe the only one, in Columbia to offer growlers of beer.

The staff are generally knowledgeable and accomodating. BA member khiasmus works there and I tend to chat him up on my visits.

Selection is great. Today, I purchased some really fresh Sculpin as well as one of the Terapin side projects and a growler of OBP Toasted Coconut Porter. The growler station is hit or miss, in my opinion, but just having the option is always nice.

I have been coming here for years and love this place. If in Columbia, one should certainly check this place out. Anything available in SC will be available here.

I lived in Columbia for years and never went here and now I could kick myself. This place is amazing! Great selection! The place is very clean and they have almost anything you could ask for. The best thing about this place is how nice the staff is and how everyone, even customers, are outgoing. I spend 45 mins in one aisle talking to a guy about tenfidy, home brews, and hiking the AT. It's been 2 years since I've visited friends up here, and now I have a big reason to come back. A must for anyone driving through Columbia on I26.

Got my first opportunity to stop by this location after passing it MANY times on I-26. Big thanks goes out to Joseph for hooking me up. Thanks again man! This is by far the best Green's as far as beer selection I have ever been to. We have one here in Greenville and the beer selection is laughable. This location is EPIC. Went to pick up two growlers only and left with a case. Oops. The beer is laid out nicely in the back right of the store and is quite easy to spot from I-26. Will definitely be stopping in when I pass by from now on. Nice work guys!

Wow.... what a beer store. I had no idea. It's the place to stop in Columbia. Talked to Wes, that is very knowledgable. I was very imperessed with the slection and price. Well displayed, clean store with phenomial hard to get brews. Many Founders, Rockers, Terrapin, Bruery etc.... to grab. I'll be in Columbia quite a bit and this will be my store to check things out... Great place.... One of the best beer stores I have been to. Belgian slection was huge and there are tons of mikkeler selections to chose from. Can't wait to save uo more money to stop by again.... Great store and I'm a big fan of Wes, one of their beer specialist. Thank you!

I was headed to Total Wine to purchase my beverages for vacation in the NC mountains, until I found Green's on BA. Based upon the reviews, I was initially very excited about what I'd find. And Green's lived up to my expectations. 2 full isles devoted to American craft/micro. I also noticed 6 of the 7 Trappist beers, with healthy selections of each (if applicable); and a huge selection of Europeans. But I was after the micros not available in N FL. I found New Belgium, New Holland, Founders, RJ Rockers, Bear Republic, and many others. I was impressed by the selection, and the price seemed spot, if not more inexpensive than what I am used to. The folks working seemed interested and willing to help. And the location right of I-26 makes this a no-brainer stop on these trips through Columbia.

Bar none, this place has the best selection of beer in the Columbia, SC, area and probably the best across the entire Carolinas if you ask me.
They don't have this kind of selection anywhere in the Charlotte, NC area as far as I know.

The staff is knowledgeable and courteous. They help you find what you want and what you need. Management goes way above the call of duty when it comes to the growler station as there is always a style you would enjoy! Rare keg Thursdays, I mean really rare AND creative! They have a passion for beer and it shows.

I almost forgot their FREQUENT BUYER program on the growlers. Get a free growler(max $9.99 value) after buying 10 growlers at any cost!

I say 'inexpensive' because their prices are probably better than 99% of any others, including a cash/debit discount. Keep in mind that they sell everything from 'natural light' to 'Chimay' so be prepared to pay for what you get. There are some expensive beers out there.
Definitely worth a try if you are in the area.

EDIT: Dang, that might even be my car in the picture! Probably not, but I do spend too much time there... can't help it :) Too many goood beers!

Quite simply the best store in the state. I have been finding myself making the hour and a half drive down more and more frequently as of late, mostly for rare growlers, and imports. The store is just sublime. I think i know just about everyone that works there and everyone is beyond helpful. There are the store that gets everything, prices are better then anyone else and I can always find something new. Hard to believe that a store this great exists in the state. There is no excuse not to stop in here if you are in the state, period.

This is the best place to get your beer at in Columbia.

They have pretty much everything you can find in the state and the selection has grown by leaps and bounds in the year and a half I have been going here. You can find a lot of the locals here including Coast.

I haven't bought any bad beer here before and I think this has to do with the staff. Some of the staff has no knowledge of beer at all, these tend to be the cashiers and some of the people walking around in the wine section of the store. This is offset by two guys in the beer section. I've seen one of them in the store every time I've been in there so any questions I have they answer. They even provide me with opinions on things I haven't had before and have admitted when they do not know much about a particular beer. They also send out a weekly newsletter via e-mail that details all their new beers, what is currently on the growler station and what their Rare Growler fill will be for the week. This newsletter is great and has definitely sent me to the store unexpectedly.

Finally I would like to talk about the growler station. This thing is great! They have 4 beers on at a time. On Thursday's they have a rare growler fill(Lagunitas Hairy Eyeball, Sculpin, Hopslam, Oak Aged Wake n Bake are just a few examples). I believe this is the only place in Columbia that offers growler fills and I love it! Only 2.99 for a growler and then the cost of the fills varies from 7.99 to 15.99(I think?) They also have started a reward program where you can get a free growler after buying 10 growlers.

If you are in town just visiting and want to pick up some locals this is your store, if you live here and want to find some fresh beer this is your store. Like I said in the beginning this is the best beer store in Columbia!

Not only do they have the best selection in the area, they also have the best prices by a long shot. They often get many rare beers in and have amazing prices on them. The rare beer Thursdays are always great, and amazingly priced. The managers there are also very knowledgeable and friendly. If you have a question they will have an answer for you. You can tell the place is run by a couple of beer geeks that share all of our passion for great beer. My go to spot for great craft beers. The only problem is it is hard to leave there with one or two things because there are so many other things there that i want.

(From notes)

I have to say that the selection here was pretty damn good, but I was hoping to see a bit better of a regional/local selection of brews. In any case, I was still able to find quite a few nice US and European brews that I haven't seen on the shelves in NY/NJ just yet.

The single selection (of 12oz.) could have been a bit better as well, but the bomber selection was pretty outstanding.

I only have the Total Wine nearby this location to compare for the area, but I have to say that Green's was better for overall selection, and plus they do growler fills, which is pretty cool.

My only real complaint is that I wasn't offered service at any point, but then again, I didn't go looking so not entirely their fault. Definitely worth a stop if you're in the area.

This Green's is much better than the one on Assembly. The one on Assembly is more convenient, location-wise, but everything else at the Piney Grove store blows it away.

First of all, it has a growler station. Four taps, two of which are high gravity. At last check (2/21), they had Red Brick's Winter, Left Hand Milk Stout, Southampton Double White, and Founders Dirty Bastard. It's like three bucks for a new growler, then seven for a low gravity fill and ten for high gravity.

This Green's has way more bombers than the other. Plenty of six packs, refrigerated or warm. They also seem to be pretty on top of new releases...if you want something new, this is the place to go. Very knowledgeable staff.

They also sell glassware, which is a huge plus. They've added a ton of logo glassware recently.

Best beer store in Columbia, and it's not far behind Charleston Beer Exchange for best in the state.

This Green's location seems to have a little more beer than the one on Assembly St. The best thing about this location is that they fill growlers. They usually have 3 or 4 different things tapped. Beer is divided (for the most part) into American, Belgian, English, and the rest of Europe. Most of their selection is unrefrigerated but they do have some things in a cooler against the back wall. They have a good selection of cases as well. They sometimes have a few nice glasses for sale.

Prices are good and discounted is you pay cash.

This Green’s is like a wholesale warehouse of wine and beer. More wine than beer but it is definitely starting to come into its own for beer too. Cases of beer fill the place so it is a definite for a party. Also as far as cases go it has a greater selection than their other location on Assembly St. and the parking is a lot better too. I like the Green’s on Assembly better for their selection of singles and the Worlds Best Beer Room that stores the beer at a more adequate temperature. Both are great locations. The staff is always friendly and willing to learn about beer as well as school you too.

This place is pretty large and the selection is spread out all over the store like it would be in a warehouse. There's also a very large fridge in the back that includes most of what you'll find on the floor.

The service seems to be okay. I didn't have anyone offer to help me but the place was pretty crowded and I saw employees helping others which was more important anyway because... hey I'm a BA.

The selection was fine for a South Carolina store. They offer pretty much anything you'll find in state. They however aren't too big on singles (their biggest flaw by far). They only singles they sell are 500 or 750 MLs for the most part. Occasionally, I've found a gem or two hiding on the shelves here but for the most part, they sell the same stuff you'll find in state at a better price.

This place is worth a trip if you're in the area.

This Green's was a little bit of a let down for me. It's selection was ok, in that it did have some good craft/imports, but the other beers just out numbered it. In the other beers, that means micros/imports that can be found anywhere else. The highlight was definately the service. I noticed several employees helping others find a good beer or wine for Thanksgiving. It did have a large section of beers in the a fridge section that scaled the entire back wall. Overall it was a little bit of a let down. Normally this store has some better selections.

Living in the Irmo area, it was very nice to see both a Green's and Total Wine (see another review of an area location) open with a "one-two-punch". Within a few months, what was a usual 30 min drive to downtown Columbia to purchase crafted brew, turned into a 10-min drive to two prime venues.

Green's has a large selection with a nice selection clearly separated by country of origin. A very nice side feature, it the option of buying either "room-temp" or "refrigerated" versions of many of the same crafted beers. Always a plus when your running short on time.

The prices here are quite in line, and many times less than what can bought at near-by locations.

The staff are quite helpful, and many times know as much about the brews, and they do about the wines.

Green's on Fernandina is a very large place, almost a warehouse. The layout is different than the one downtown and the selection is somewhat different as well. The Fernandina location seems to be more of a sixpack and case type of store.

The prices at Green's are always amazing. Some NC beers are less expensive in Green's than you find them in NC. The service is typical and not especially helpful, but the selection is very good for a SC store and I often stop in to see what they might have that is new. Often they will get an odd Belgian in that I have never seen before, perhaps because of the lower ABV or just that SC has a few of the importers for those brands.

If in the area and looking for a place to purchase beer, Green's should definitely be on your list of places to stop by.
