Swung by Fathead's with the family and trep after a disappointing WVU loss to Pittsburgh (eat shit Pitt).

Great bar atmosphere, despite the crowd that had amassed on the Friday afternoon. Huge brick wall lists the beers on tap (~40 when we were there), and the rest of the wall is decorated with brewery stencils. Ordered a Victory Harvest Pils, and then a Sierra Nevada Harvest Ale. Both were served properly.

The largest complaint we had was the service. We put our names in (party of 4) and parties of 6, 2, 2, and 8 were seated ahead of us. The hostess even called our name, only to rescind her offer and give our seats away to another group. Still, the projected half hour wait only took 50 minutes, but it did put a damper on the mood. The saving grace was that our server was good, promptly bringing our food and refilling drinks.

Speaking of food, I had the #5 sandwich in the US (as rated by Maxim magazine)-- Pierogi topping kielbasa sausages. Despite the huge size of the sandwich, I found it to be rather bland and dry. The chips were good, though, and everyone else seemed to enjoy their burgers.

Perhaps the best part about Fathead's is the upstairs beer store--Victory, Oscar Blues, Moylan's, Southern Tier, Green Flash, Rogue, Voodoo, and many many more breweries represented by the well-designed bottle selection. It is on the pricier side, however, as 6 beers (2 bombers, 1 single, 1 Ten Fidy, 2 Gordon) cost me around $25. And that was WITH the mix-n-match discount. Oh well. Still kicking myself for not picking up on some Pilzilla...it wasn't in the fridge, so I couldn't get the discounted price for it.

Hands down, my favorite bar in Pittsburgh. With Head Hunter always on tap, how could you go wrong?

Visited on a Wednesday evening. Place was very crowded. Sat at the bar.

V - Bright, a little bit loud, clean and new, a decent beer vibe, but just as much of a sit down and have a great burger place. Kids were not with me, but seemed kid friendly as well. 4.25

Q - Proper glassware, clean glassware, no complaints - 4

Ser - It was a bit slow at the bar, but when I had their attention everything from my beer to my burger arrived quickly. Of course, friendly and helpful. Just enough chatter. 4

Sel - A wide selection of Fat Head beers, with at least ten more from other breweries. This was a late June visit, but I was disappointed there weren't a few more heavy, roasty, high ABV beers on tap. 4.25

F - Had a burger. Fantastic. Good home made potato chips as well. 4

The service and food were terrible. They don't serve flights, so it's impossible to taste the wide variety of beers that they have on tap. It's typical of other brew pubs in its Vibe, but the overall quality of the experience was greatly diminished by the poor food and poor service as well as the limited numbers of beers that could be tasted.
The waitress had little knowledge of the beers on the menu.

Overall a very good experience; would go back in a heart beat.

Beer: They had about 40 taps; 20 guest taps and 20 Fat Head's beers. No flights but they are coming in another month. Good mix in styles, tried 2-3 very good ones, especially Head Hunter. Head Hunter bottles to go too which is awesome, and they do growlers.

Food: Huge menu, we had wings, a chicken sandwich, and perogies. All were great; great bar food.

Service: Awesome. Waiter was knowledgeable about the food and beer, gave helpful opinions, and came by to refill our glasses all the time.

Great place.

Fat Heads is a strange part of the beer scene in Pittsburgh. Nestled in a very "college friendly" area, it struggles to be a place that I would ever want to frequent.

The atmosphere was pretty decent. Looks and feels more like a restaurant than a taproom but there is a good amount of seating both at the bar and the dining area. We tried several times before to check the place out but it was packed to the gills.

Selection - While they have a large amount of Fat Heads beer on tap, they have a greater amount of other breweries on tap. It was just another reminder that it was a restaurant first, tap room for Fat Heads second.

I ordered a hamburger and it was very bland. The burger was cooked properly so kudos for that but the meat had zero seasoning. The bun was equally bland and while the burger was large, I would have preferred a smaller, more flavorful one.

My experience was not a great one and probably will not go back. I wasn't impressed with the food or the beer and while the service was good, this isn't enough reason for me to return.

Right in the heart of Carson St, this place seems to stay pretty busy. Selection is solid, with about 10 Fat Heads beers on tap, and about a dozen from other breweries. The food is awesome! My friend and I ordered a burger and sandwich and they are huge! One of the best sandwiches that I've had in a while. I'd definitely come back next time I'm in town.

Great spot for some tasty brews and good grub. They have at least 10 of their own brews on tap with a mix of year round (Head Hunter) and rotating / seasonals. They actually had a 2013 Vintage aged Christmas ale in addition to the fresh one. They also have a nice selection of guest drafts. Backwoods bastard was on. Happy hour specials are great. half off their beer from 3-6 M-F so $3 pints of Head Hunter! It seems there is always a decent wait for a table here so don't show up too starving. But they take your phone number and text/call u when table is ready. I enjoyed the southside slopes sandwhich (kielbasa and a fried perogi with sautéed onions and cheeee) would definitely recommend. Their food selection is insane. so many options and all sounds so good.

The OG Fat Heads, been there more times than I can count. Good sammies, great selection of FH and other craft breweries, as well as arsenal cider. Service can be slow at times because its always packed.

Huge portion sizes of fantastic food really make Fat Head's stand above the rest! You'll have to wait a bit for a table occasionally, but that wait is worth it once you see their very large selection of beers. Their own beers are great and they carry a slew of other craft brews you can enjoy.
Check it out if you're ever down on the South Side of Pittsburgh.

Had a very nice time here this afternoon with the wife and kids. Not as kid-friendly as the N. Olmstead location, and a bit crowded, but we came in pretty much during the lunch rush. Excellent tap list. Great Fat Head's choices on tap (I had Sorcerer and she had Hippy Sippy), and a bevy of other great brews to choose from as well. Wide variety of styles. I thought the waitresses/bartenders/greeter were really nice, especially as we brought in kids and a 6 month old in a stroller (I guess we contributed to the crowdedness)! The food was good, and there was a ton of it. Overall, just a fun time, and a no-brainer if you are in the area and enjoy great Fat Heads brews!

Great selection and sandwiches, long waits for tables, rude staff, very drunk patrons, and the few times I was there it was mid afternoon ! Lots of kids, basically free roaming kids while there parents get drunk. On guy actually disciplined a kid by picking him up by his foot and holding him up toward the ceiling, while the crowd and staff roared with laughter, not for mature craft beer, shame because the potential is there

Fat Head's has the most consistently interesting tap list in the city. I can't really think of anything that would even be close. They seem to have really increased their own offerings, with around 10 of the draft lines for at least the last 6 months. Frequently top selections like IBUsive and Barrel-Aged Battleaxe are available, but it seems impossible to go wrong with a Fat Head's brew as long as it is a style you like. There are a bunch of styles that I have become interested in just by trying them here. They do a very good job of bringing in other interesting drafts too, and unlike a few of the competitors in and around the city they seem to do it within normal distribution channels. It can get crowded, and there isn't much room in the bar area. The food selection is extensive. It wouldn't be healthy to eat there too often, but you can't find better tasting bar food in my opinion.

This review is based on a single visit, though the experience was a good one and anticipate going back whenever possible. Atmosphere was friendly, patrons were friendly and polite and wait staff
cordial and knowledgeable. We got there at 2:30 pm and was told a 45 to 60 minute wait which ended up being only 30 minutes , by the time we left at about 4 pm it was wall to wall, can't even guess what the wait time was. Food portions were huge and all at our table enjoyed their meals. Beer selection was very good and varied. I tried their IPA and Imperial Red Ale and they were very good to excellent. Recommendation is a must visit when in the Pittsburgh area but expect a wait, as one would expect!

This place has great beer and food! The sandwiches and burgers are fantastic and they have a great selection of beer along with their own line of beer! Head Hunter IPA is a must when you go here. It is an excellent IPA! They have an assortment of food to order. If you ever visit Pittsburgh, PA head down to South Side for Fat Head's Saloon! You won't be disappointed!

Amazing selection of food. I've never had a bad meal here. It's around $6.00 for a beer on draft which is a little high, but could be higher, however the Fat Head brews are great. Try the southside slopes sandwich, also the chicken parmesean soup is so good if they have it when you go there.

Place was busy when we arrived. (Around 5 on a Saturday night). Bar area was filled but bartenders were still available. Beer selection on tap was varied and all unique and many more on bottles. Food was decent (pub food) but I didn't really go there for the food. Head Hunter was very good. I look forward to going back.

This is probably the go-to beer spot in Pittsburgh located right on the main bar street on the south side.

Really nice selection of their own beers that is complimented by a similarly nice selection of other beer from the likes of Great Lakes, DFH, Troegs, SN and others.

Had wings which were very good as was the service. This is defintiely worth a visit if you are in Pittsburgh, especially if you have never had Head Hunter IPA.

This bar is also a very good size so there are no issues getting a seat here.

I've been going here since the mid 1990's, and we still try to make it at least once a month. I've seen a few celebrities make the trip to Fatheads over the years (saw Russel Crow there a few years ago, and the waitress said he was there the day before, but he liked it so much he came back the next day).

The beer selection has always been over the top. There are two chalkboards over the bar with the draft listing, which lately has been including a lot of Fat Head's Brewery choices (which are typically world class options). They also always have something on "cask". If you haven't been living under a rock, you have likely heard of Head Hunter IPA, and they almost always have it available on tap. And the bottle selection is no slouch, either. The beer menu is updated often, and they almost certainly will have something to suit your tastes and mood.

As if the beer selection itself isn't enough to get you in here when in Pittsburgh, the food is wonderful. The burgers are some of the best I've had (although another Pittsburgh option for burgers is Burgatory, which are good as well, but no where near the beer choices). The wings are also great - they offer both traditional wings and char-grilled wings. I am a heat freak and love the Char Grilled Caribbean Killers. In the traditional wing arena, the Spicy Parmesan wings are amazing as well. There are plenty of other options to choose from outside of the burger arena, and I've had many of them and disliked none. You should be warned - the sandwiches and everything else served here are HUGE. You should bring an appetite, and maybe skip the extra appetizer until you see how full your plate will be - save the extra $$$ for another brew!

The service is consistently great, particularly considering how busy they usually are. But, you will inevitably have to wait 30-60 minutes for a seat if you come on a weekend. That said, they have somehow kept much of the wait staff for years (one lady that works there has been serving us since we got engaged in 2001). In all the years we have come here, there have been maybe 2 times we were disappointed in the service (which says something, considering we really do go here 10-15 times a year).

Finally, there is a six-pack shop upstairs in which you can get some beer to go and some Fathead's paraphernalia. The beers up there are relatively pricey, but most places that offer beer to go do charge a premium.

If you are in Pittsburgh and want to find a place the locals go to, this is it. You can find parking back a street (go down 18th off of Carson and there is a pay lot right there). If you are going to be there for a while, you might want to drive along the road parallel to Carson and see if you can find a spot - but be warned the locals sometimes block off spots with chairs or cones. All that said, if you are in from out of town, I highly recommend getting a cab and making a night of it. There are a metric F*ck-ton of other establishments all around the South Side of Pittsburgh, and you can walk to all of them - just have the driver drop you off at 18th and Carson.

Fat Head's in Pittsburgh, PA is the place to be for good food and good beer. The Saloon is crowded on game days. The atmosphere is fantastic. The Head Hunter IPA is just outstanding. The service is good and the food is excellent. A great Pittsburgh bar and a great experience.
