Waterfront atmosphere is only thing that makes this ram a little better than the two in my neighborhood.

Nice location on Ruston Way, down by the water, close to some decent seafood spots but very busy, especially on the weekends. This place is ALWAYS busy!! Your typical Big Horn but more of college crowd than military crowd like the Lakewood location. You might get aggrevated at the teenage hangouts who like to stray around on weekends. It takes a while to get around and parking is not fun. Decent place but not a favorite by any means. Beer is decent, food is decent and eye candy is good, very, very good.

I like most of the Big Horn's I've been to except this one. The Big Horn's have their standard beers using the same basic recipes. The brews here are not very good and the seasonals are awful. I know each Big Horn has it's own brew master and the one here is not very good, at least when I went there in 2004. The outside patio with vies of Commencement Bay and Vashon Island are spectacular. I was there in the summer and the cheap resin chairs got hot and collapsed. The Manger came over and offered me a piece of pie for my trouble. Not a good Big Horn, try the one in Puyallup or Lakewood

It was snowing in Seattle, and the weathermen were strongly suggesting that if you were home, stay home. But as the snow appeared to be subsiding, I decided to venture out and drive down to Tacoma for some food and beer. It was a hellacious drive. One that made me wonder; have these people ever seen snow before?

As you might expect, the Ram Restaurant and Big Horn Brewery was practically deserted when I arrived on this snowy Wednesday night. It's a huge place, and there were less than a dozen customers throughout. When I walked in around 9pm, it seemed like they were getting ready to close.

This place is half sports bar, half restaurant and adorned with lots of sports memorabilia and a big shark hanging from the ceiling. A neon sign over the impressively oversized wooden bar exclaims "Washington's Tallest Bar." To the right of the bar is one of the largest, clearest projection TVs I've ever seen. Another five large flat panels surround the bar. This would have been a great place to catch last weekend's Seattle vs. Dallas wildcard game.

The music is good but could be louder. The menu offers a fairly wide selection of chicken, ribs, pasta, sandwiches, steaks, seafood, salads and "award winning burgers." Since it was late, I ordered 2 personal sized appetizers; wings and potato skins, and a Total Disorder Porter. The food is lame but certainly edible, and the porter is served in an ice cold 18 oz. glass (the only other option was a 24 oz glass).

After the porter, I ordered a beer sampler that included 3 oz servings of the Big Horn Light (marked as their seasonal), a Blonde, a Hefeweizen, Amber, Porter and an IPA. The Light is surprisingly good, as is the Hefe (with a sweet banana, spice aroma), the Porter (now that its not being served in a block of ice) and the IPA, which had a real pleasant orange citrus nose and crisp balanced finish.

As far as the atmosphere, it was hard to tell. The place bills itself as a family restaurant (where kids under 10 eat free in Feb), but it is clearly dominated by the huge bar area. I'm sure this place would be very different on a weekend night or a big game day

It was still snowing when I left, and the ride home was a challenge. The roads had become slick and littered with casualties from the earlier rush hour commute. But, overall I think it was worth it. At least the beer was good and the service was quick and friendly.
