Pours a very dark clear brown, tan film for a head.
Smells of brown sugar and roasty bready malts.
Tastes of cocoa, coffee, brown sugar malts, and a dry hoppiness in the finish.
Medium body with light carbonation.
Decent brown ale, good flavor and aroma. Not super memorable, but nothing much to complain about. Pairs pretty well with their food too.

This beers is one of the best to come out of this place. It is a nice deep coffee brown with an off-white head to that stuck around for a bit. Subtle Aromas of cascade hops are right up front followed by a light roasted note to it. Some sweet dark fruits maybe as well. The hops come out again in the flavor of the beer. Starts off dry and lightly carbonated, followed by some medium bodied roasty chocolately malt and the finish of a dry semi bitter beer with a nice balance of hoppy bitterness to finish it off. A well rounded beer, easy for drinking at anytime.

Edit 1/3/05: The brewer contacted me and apparently the take-home menus at the brewpub were incorrect. This beer isnt loosely based on a quad, but instead a Flemish brown. This beer much more closely resembles the Flemish Brown than it does the quad. The courant/date fruitiness fits in to the style and the "loosely" modifier still applies as the brewer said this beer didnt have the tartness of the original style. Ive adjusted my smell and taste scores up to take into account this new info.
Original 12/31/04: Ok, I will say that I really loved this beer. Ill start off with my original review where I was under the impression is was just your average English-style brown ale and finish up with style annoyances. Dark ruby, almost a little purple, with a head that laces nicely. Very mellow and with a light aroma. Theres a slight bit of roast in there, and a nice, warm nuttiness. A bit of courant or dried date is mixed in there. Quite possibly the best brown since Boyne River stopped brewing. Unfortunately, the brewery calls this a beer "loosely based on a Belgian quadrupel". That would explain the courant/date fruitiness, but this is far from a Belgian style. That really bugs me. I counted a bit off for calling this a Belgian-style beer when it doesnt carry any of the yeast-derived flavors expected from the base style.
