This place is a complete joke for any kind of store. I've been there once before I started homebrewing to get stocked up on everything I needed. Walked in and there was no one there except the owner behind the counter. I wondered around while he was on the phone obviously talking to a friend. I even walked up to the counter to wait for help and he just kept talking. I was actually going to give this clown a good bit of business? After about 10 minutes I walked out. Ended up getting all my setup at Beer Crazy in Urbandale. Waaaay better place plus they sell beer. I was there yesterday and he is expanding the store, its twice the size now. If you go to Heartland prepare to be ignored. Its almost like the guy doesn't want business. Do everyone a favor and sell your business to someone who wants to be there.

Bought my brewing equipment kit from this store. Comparable price as far as the equipment kit. Been back a time or two to try to find an ingridient kit to, but there wasn't a very big selection at all. The owner does need to definatly work on his customer service, (customer service is a big deal to me). Every time I've shopped at Heartland, the owner was either in the back room and unaware that I was there, or he was busy talking on the phone to a random person about a random thing. Been a while since I been back there as I do a good deal of my homebrew shopping at Beer Crazy, minus the occasional on-line shopping. Beer Crazy has alot better selection, customer service, and they're very helpful in giving advice.

I stopped by this joint in December 09. First off, the hops are sitting out on the shelf. do i really need to say more. Seriously, get a fridge. I wandered around the place for a bit, and noone came out to help me or greet me-weird??? The grains looked like they were dumped in a bin and the other equipment and other things were scattered about. The selection of everything else was average. I was unimpressed and will not purchase from here. Sorry for the fans...There are other shops in the area that are better...not great...but better.

This place is a joke. Extremely poor service. The owner of this store needs to learn a few things about customer service and could use a major attitude adjustment towards his customers. Especially in a small market like DM. Acting like a total pr!ck is not a way to win over a customer. Not impressed by the fact that there's animals crawling all over the store either. There's a much nicer place across town called New City Market. Very limited selection, but plan ahead and they will order anything you need. Very nice prices too.

Me and my roommate were long overdue for a start into homebrewing, so we decided to make a drive to Des Moines. This place had everything we needed to start out and more. I was a little bit weary of his customer service skills at first, but when the owner realized how much money we were prepared to spend, he suddenly ecame more than helpful.

The store is pretty neat. Has a few pets running around, and as an animal lover that is a bonus. Not quite as big as I was expecting after browsing the website and noting how much inventory is available. Nonetheless, this is a full-scale homebrew store, and everything you might need is available here.

Has a huge selection of ingredients for both wine and beer, plus a wide variety of recipes available for use. I forsee another visit to this place in the future, because my local homebrew store just doesn't cut it compared to this place.

I called ahead one Thursday in April 2005 to see if they had any 5-gallon cornie kegs I would need for an upcoming party. Yes, they did and yes they would be willing to stay open an extra half hour for me that evening (it was a 2 hour trip for me to Des Moines from Iowa City). When I arrived, I thanked the owner and he helped me pick out a couple kegs from his large inventory of them. He was also kind enough to stay a few extra minutes while I wandered around. Good lord, every inch of this store is packed with anything you'd need to make and dispense beer, wine, mead, cider, etc. At least a half-dozen different brands of malt extract (in both dry and liquid form) were available. Bulk grains of all sorts, 50 kinds of liquid yeast, an enormous selection of hops, half-dozen cleaners and sanitizers. Any brand or strain of anything you can thing of, he's got it. Need a cider press?...what size, they have several available. All of this is well organized and easy to find. In addition to the beer equipment and ingredients, he has a large selection of wine kits and all the extra goodies you'd need to make wine. Kudos to "Heartland Homebrew Supply" for offering a full-service do-it-yourself shop in Iowa's capital.
