Black in color but when held up to the light has a brown hue around the edges of the glass. Coffee and mocha smells radiate from the glass. Chocolate flavors are dominant but there are some mocha and burnt undertones floating around. Bitterness is very low. Almost feels like drinking a thick chocolate milkshake with some complexity. Very interesting brew indeed.

Pours a dark black but the head just didn't materialize, lacing will coat the glass however. The smell is of prunes and deep dark chocolate, hint of roasted marshmellows. The taste was lacking any definition, while hints of mocha and cream were detected nothing stood out and taste seemed to cancel out. No real flavor. Medium bodied and nice and creamy. It is not bad but for all the hoopla surrounding this by the locals, not what I expected.

Sampled @ Elliot Bay, West Seattle, April 2007
Despite being quite black in color, I can see hints of ruby through the sides as this beer is brilliantly clear. The aroma is quite dry with toasty malt notes, rich malt, chocolate aromatics and even notes reminiscent of espresso in the finish. Underneath this is a touch of burnt fruit aromatics as well.

The taste is a bit sweeter than expected, but still, solid black coffee notes tend to dry out the finish. This has quite a light mouthfeel to it that makes this quite an easily quaffed brew. Flavors of burnt berries and burnt raisins are noticeable underneath the dry, roast grain character. A fairly tasty brew.

After several tastings of this beer over the years I just gave up. Everytime I taste it, there is a difference. Chocolate one day, roasty the next. Only consistent thing is the color, deep black with a small dirty bown head. Its an average Stout and it is filling. Two of them and I was a goner, ready for a nap.

A solid, all-around stout, with strong roasted character and abundant roast barley flavor atop an undercurrent of molasses-like sweetness and assertive bittering. A citrus hop aroma unfurls above a head of light tan suds and a body of shadowed mahogany. Worthy and robust in every dimension. And not shy.

Tried at the brewery 11 Sep 2009.

Very dark coffee brown color. Mild roasty aroma, chocolatey sweet, touch of vanilla. Starts lightly roasty, very chocolatey. Underlying smokiness. Body is almost milky. Finish is coffee and vanilla.

Almost like a mocha. The No Doubt Stout onion soup is also quite good. Guest reviewer K says 'Two thumbs up'.
