Style | ABV
American Pale Ale (APA) |  5.70% ABV

Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
Pale Ale's are turning into hoppy monsters, but our Iowa Pale Ale is more mild and about balance. It has enough bitterness to match the maltiness provided by the pale malt base. It gets its citrus zing from extensive dry-hopping with Cascade hops.

Appearance: A golden-copper beer with a tan head that rose up to a little over a finger. A ton of loose, fine sediment escaped from the bottle and floated around, suspended in the beer. A thin layer of bubbles lingered on top of the liquid for the entire time.

Smell: Very bready and yeasty right after the pour. Some light hops rose up after the beer had settled. Before I had taken a drink, I was distracted by a phone call and the beer sat for another ten minutes or so. When I returned to it, it was a little smokey with some sharp, dark fruit.

Mouthfeel: Creamy and mouthfilling. There was a strong fuzziness to it that was probably caused by all the sediment in suspension. Medium bodied.

Taste: A dry, cracker-like maltiness was joined immediately by a crisp hops bitterness. A little sweet vanilla hovered underneath. The bitterness sharpened on the finish and was joined by a little cherry. The hops lingered for a long time into the aftertaste.

A pretty good "pail" in my opinion.

12oz bottle poured into a pint glass. This beer looks great with a huge head that lasts the entire sitting. There is great lacing. The color is deep golden and is actually quite cloudy. This APA has a mild smell and it's taste is matched with a fairly balanced, mild hoppy flavor. There is a hint of bitterness at the finish.

At the end of the day, this is a nice beer that is a bit milder than I would expect from an APA. Of course, the brewer's notes state that the mild flavor was the idea for this brew. Overall a solid beer that is easy to drink. It is well constructed, but does not particularly stand out. Even still, it is worth a drink if you are in Iowa.

12 oz. bottle, with no apparent bottled on date present. Traded my cousin two bottles of Rogue Juniper Pale Ale for two of this beer, while staying in Iowa for the weekend. A local Iowa brew that I can't get in Illinois; sounds good to me. My first encounter with this brewery.

Poured into a clear balloon snifter glass.

A - Pours one finger of creamy off-white / beige colored head on top of a bright orange colored body.

S - Smell is of bitter citric grapefruits, light pine, a hint of grainy malt, cereal, and a nice familiar floral / herbal juicy hop scent. A bit soapy on the finish. A fairly simple aroma, but it hits it's mark, for me.

T - Taste brings more of the same: dirty earthiness, herbal / leafy / fruity hop presence, grapefruit / piney bitterness, and some caramel malt presence. I like the balance between the malts and the hops.

M - Feel ends dry, with citric bitterness lingering on the palate. Nice carbonation.

Overall, a nice easy drinking pale ale, with the right kind of flavor that the local goods should deliver. Easy drinking, sessionable, light bodied, and with a rewarding 5.70%, this is definitely a beer I would try again next time it's made available to me. Recommended.
