The name Schild Brau means essentially 'Schild Beer' in German. This is our flagship brew, a microbrew done in the style of the special beers of Munich. This beer is brewed in the style of a Vienna Lager.

Our beer uses these same malts to attain a perfect balance between malty sweetness and a firm bitterness.

Pours a good amber color, with good clarity, minimal head, this looks the part of a Vienna Lager. Aroma was lacking that vienna malt sweetness to look for in this style. Wasn't bad put off bad, but was just, meh.

Taste, smooth and the malt content seems to be just right, thin enough, yet chewy. Would have liked to have seen just a little more hop zest, 20-30 ibu, instead of what tastes like 10-15. But its probably more in the tradition of a good Vienna or oktoberfest. Plenty of that nutty caramel thing going on in the mouthfeel, but it just is too middle of the road for me.

Appearance: Straight pour into a becker glass. Not the correct beerware, but it will do. The color is a light amber/copper. One finger of white head developed and dissipated almost immediately to leave a spotted lacing and ring around the edge.

Smell: Mostly caramel and toffee, but there is a hint of chocolate to give it a little darker richness.

Taste: Mirrors the aroma and is very straightforward. Caramel, toffee, and a hint of chocolate. There is a subtle hop bitterness at the end of each sip.

Drinkability: Not much complexity, but it is tasty, rich, and very drinkable. As an Iowan I hate to say this, especially since this beer just won a gold medal at the World Beer Cup: when it comes to Vienna style lager, I think Trader Joe's Vienna Style Lager beats Schild Brau. By a hair, though.

S: Nut and mild nut but very weak in terms of aroma.

T: Caramel, bourbon and sweet malts...decent amber.

M: Medium and well carbonated.

D: Not my favorite but would drink again.

I poured a 12 oz bottle into a pint glass...

The liquid was a very light amber/ copper color with a thin white head. It smells mostly of sweet caramel malt, there is a hint of nutty malt and it's a little yeasty. I could taste some apricot, also toasted bread and sweet caramel candy. The body is light - medium and the carbonation kind of bites the tongue and it leaves the mouth sticky. The Schild Brau has very rich flavor for a lager, I would love to be able to get this on a normal basis.

Millstream's flagship Schild Brau Amber is a Vienna style lager. Deep copper in color, it pours lovely with a full head that sticks to the glass as you sip. The initial sip is malty and sweet (for a lager), with a gentle rolling bite of bittering hops. With another swirl of the glass and a sample sip or two, there's a spicy herbal aroma at the nose--I suspect dry-hopping--that opens up a small dinner party in your mouth ...not the Animal House type, but the cocktails and good conversation type of party. The layers are complex and interesting. Very clean, well balanced with an excellent body for two-row malt.

Quite simply, this is outstanding.

Pretty good beer. I was surprised that it's brewed in Iowa - the label doesn't seem to fit that. Interesting name as well.

Nice amber color, good taste and feel. A little bit of a bitter aftertaste. Almost no head at all when pouring. It's worth a taste.

My first Iowa Beer.

A: Very thin head on this one, something I've noticed in all beers from this six pack. Nice active carbonation though, THe beer is a slight orange/copper (or red, it's very light sensitive) haze with nice lacing.

S: Heavy on the nutty malts, I also get some caramel and some earthy hops. No yeast aromas, but the more I smell, the more bready it gets. But it isn't too strong, just intricate.

T: Still heavy on the nutty/caramel malt, but there is a slightly sharper bite, possibly from roasted grain, but more I think from hops. Still no yeast flavors, totally clean in that regard. As I drink more, it swings back to a residual sweet, toffee taste. There's a mineralness here as well that doesn't add anything good or bad, just a uniqueness.

M: Nice carbonation, medium body: good, but not too sharp of a bite.

D: sessionable (relatively), but interesting as well.

A - Light, crisp copper, orange color. Smaller than average, foamy, bubbly, active head. Below average retention with just a small patch of lace left.

S- A lot of toasted malt with caramel and toffee coming out strong. Also a bunch of apple and floral aromas comes out. Hints of toasted bread, but not much.

T - Similar to the nose with a lot of toasted caramel malt and plenty of apple. Some spicy, earthy hops along with some herbal and floral hops as well. They definitely play second fiddle to the caramel malt though. Some mineral and toasted bready flavors come out, but they are definitely an after thought. Some grainy and earthy/nutty flavors mid to finish sip.

M - Lighter side of medium body with around average carbonation. Fairly crisp with a sticky feel.

D - Pretty drinkable beer with a decent mix of flavors. Pretty standard for the style.

Notes: An average/middle of the road beer. Not bad but not outstanding. A lot of malty flavor with a decent hop flavor.

I know I like bock brews the best, but this brew is my top favorite brew from Millstream Brewing Co. (their bock beer trails in a close second). At least once or twice a year, my wife and I visit the Amana Colonies when we visit her sister, of whom lives in Cedar Rapids (not too far away from the Amana's). We always go to the colony where there the brewery in located, which I think is in Middle Amana. Great beer!

I really enjoyed this beer. Looks great, dark amber color with nice head. Great taste and flavor, very drinkable for any beer drinker. Being in Iowa, I need to try some more Millstream beers. This was the first I've had and I look forward to trying others.

Thanks again to Nick G. for the Iowa beer hook-up.

Pours a nice clear copper color with a quick dissolving head of off-white. But pretty good bubbling though.

The aroma is grainy and dry caramel malts with maybe a little astringent, just cut gardening plant hop aroma for balance.

The taste starts caramel, crystal, and biscuit malt. Then moves to a somewhat musty hop middle. But the nice grainy, malty flavors ring true throughout the whole flavor profile.

The palate starts malty and ends malty. But the middle has a weird, musty hop palate that doesn't bridge the gap between sweet and bitter very well. All and all a nice session lager that I wouldn't mind buying again.

A - Orangish brown, a touch darker han expected. Big, foamy, khaki colored head. Moderate lacing left on the glass.

S - Clean, somewhat sweet aroma. Earthy and floral notes come through as the beer warms.

T - Light sweetness backed by an earthy hop note. Floral tastes come through more and more as the beer warms. Hints of caramel.

M/D - Light to medium bodied and very crisp feel. Very easy drinking.

Appearance: Amber, good head.

Smell: Floral.

Taste: Mild sweetness, floral hops, a little metallic in the end.

Drinkability: Not bad, but not great either.

I had several of these in Iowa over the holidays from the sampler pack and it was by far my least favorite in flavor. Those were drinking straight out of the bottle vs. this review, where it was from a glass, made a huge difference. From the bottle, not palatable at all, very metallic. From the glass, the floral and malt sweetness comes through and hides most of the metal. Decent beer, not my favorite style.

Thanks goes out to tedpeer for this one.

Pours a nice clean/clear golden amber color, nice carbonation, nice little fizzy off-white head, with some sticky lacing left behind. The nose is malty, with lots of caramel. The taste is sweet, malty, with some caramel. Medium body. Drinkable, this is a nice one to drink.

Received as an extra in a trade with drhinehart- thanks a bunch!

A: pours a mildly hazy orangeish amber with a nice looking fluffy white head, good head retention

S: smell is breads, yeast, caramel malts, and a slight sweetness on the finish

T:taste starts with a touch of malty sweetness and is followed by deeper bready notes with a little yeast on the finish, some hints of tea flavor and a slight citric zest... flavors seem to be appear in the opposite order of the smell

MF: pretty spot on for the style, nice medium body that holds up the bready flavors well

D: this is quite quaffable and enjoyable. The flavors are subtle but there seems to be a decent amount of complexity for such a light beer This leaves a nice flavor in the mouth which will keep you coming back for more. This typically isn't my style, but I found this version to be quite enjoyable

very light malts, not much on nose at all

a slight sweet pear up front that quickly turned bitter and then malty through the finish. very nice.

fairly full bodied with a nice medium carbonation.

not bad at all, pretty easy to drink and a nice flow of flavors that complimented each other.

Had on tap at the brewery.
Pours a lovely amber color with a creamy white, long-lasting, head.
Subtle malty aroma with toffee and citrus undertones.
Nice balanced flavor with good, but not overpowering, maltiness.
Mouthfeel is decent, but could be a bit fuller.
A very drinkable beer, especially sitting out in the brewery's beer garden.

Poured from a bottle to a pint glass. Pours to a copper color with a nice, fluffy off white head. Aroma is mainly malt, some caramel. Sweet taste, caramel, kind of bready with a slight bite at the end. A very tasty beer. Medium bodied with the right amount of carbonation. Overall a pretty good beer.

Poured from the bottle into a pilsner glass, beer is a clear, copper color with a thin but solid off-white head. The nose is readily apparent and is of lightly toasted, slightly sweet amber malt. No hops to speak of. The taste has the same feel; lots of caramel and lightly toasted grain (victory perhaps?), a bit bready and hops to balance but no real hop presence. The mouthfeel is light in body with an almost creamy carbonation and a slightly dry finish. Certainly a drinkable beer, this could be an easy session beer.

On tap at the cedar rapids airport (it's nice to see craft beer on tap in such a small airport.) Supper clear copper colored beer with a slightly fluffed, off white head. There is some sudsy stickiness but it dissipates quickly and ends up as a thin coating across the top of the brew.

Smell is almost non-existent. There is a mild sweetness but not much of anything else, although it is pleasant.

The taste is of muted grains and has a light coppery metallic flavor which is reinforced by a delicate bitterness. That description is better then it really deserves because this beer is not just mild it's a borderline ghost. If it wasn't for the carbonation I doubt it would have any taste.

The mouthfeel is not very refreshing and is kind of rough. I do like the carbonation because it redeems this brew from being almost undrinkable. This one could use more of everything, more hops, grain, nose, flavor, you name it. One word can describe it... boring. It's a girlfriend beer.

A: Amber with a slight chill haze and active carbonation. A fizzy cream head starts small and quickly settles to a thin sheet. Leaves a small amount of lace.

S: Lemon and sweet caramel stuck the most to me. There a small amount of fresh cut grass as well.

T: Quick bittersweet. Caramel sweetness and a pepper bitterness create this sensation. The sweetness hits first, but the pepper bitterness soon follows. The pepper becomes more pronounced in the finish were it's joined by a faint metallic flavor.

M: The medium light body is dry and feels over carbonated.

D: This is a decent beer. It didn't tug at my heartstrings, but I still enjoyed it.

Decent offering of the generally bland "amber" non-category (which oft-times gets shuffled into "Vienna Lager." Well-balanced, with a nutty, bready sweet flavor offsetting a moderate amount of bitterness. Defintely a step beyond the "Fat Tire," "Killian's" breed of this entry level style; with a more forceful front edge and a thicker mouthfeel. Enjoyable enough, but nothing to set the world on fire.

Poured into a mug.

A: Pours a clear ruby-brown color with a thin, fizzy white head that dissipated rather quickly.

S: Rich caramel and toffee aromas with an underlying nutty character. Big malty sweetness with nary a whiff of hops to be found.

T: Pretty nice toasty notes to support the aforementioned malty character. Pleasant tasting, but not particularly deep. I love the tastes it has going on, but I wish there were more.

M: Lighter side of a medium body and lower carbonation. This beer seems to strive for a rich, chewy feel, but never quite gets there. Finishes pretty clean.

D: Easy drinking with this one. A maltier all-night beer for some.

Not a bad start, but this beer seems like its crying out to be something more. I enjoyed the bottle I had, but I wouldn't fancy a second.

Pours a nutty, caramel color with minimal head and a likewise big, sweetly malted and nutty nose! Flavor is great, sweet honey and rich malt. Nice mouthfeel, quite syrupy for a lager.

Overall a surprisingly tasty lager, not at all what I was expecting. Very enjoyable!

A - orangish-amber in color with a small head
S - Has a sweet malt aroma
T - I really like the sweet bready malts on this beer. It has a real nice caramel sweetness to it as it lingers. Has a touch of bitterness to it at the end. It Definitely fits the marzen label, although they don't specifically call it that.
M - It has that crisp lager flavor with a fairly light body that is well representative of the style.
D - I enjoy this beer and it drinks as well as any marzen that i've had the pleasure of drinking. I am eating some buttered popcorn along with this beer.
