Package: 12oz. crowned brown heritage bottle; somewhere between a stubby and a longneck. Common date scale along side is not notched (all too common lately). No ABV information. Pleasant green label with grist mill logo.
Cost: Acquired via trade
Presentation: Shaker pint at ~50º
Appearance: A tad lighter than normal for an oatmeal stout. Admits some light, giving it a aint tea-like glow. Generated a generous, but loose cream-colored head; that resolved quickly down to a stout ring.
Smell: Nice but faint aroma, with some nice roastiness and a likable cereal note.
Taste: Reasonably full, considering the faint aroma. Gently roasted flavor with some sweet graininess and a recognizable oatmeal fullness. A mild fruity dimension also makes itself known. Finishes cleanly but a bit quickly, with a diluted sensation.
Mouthfeel: Starts off very creamy and reasonably full, but does sort of collapse into a more watery state. Seemingly consistent with their other beers (qv.). Interesting in that I feel similarly about some of Ithaca Brewings beers (especially the brown ale). Very silky, persistent carbonation. Very interesting in that the carbonation is so good, while the body is a bit on the weak side. Tough to rate.
Drinkability: A beer that is likely to please a wide range of people. Very smooth, easy-drinking and satisfying, but complex enough for serious beer drinkers.
Backwash: Quite an interesting beer. Labelled as a lager, you would hardly know it but for the slightly diluted body and perhaps the simple flavor profile. Still, it provides a good deal of flavor and enjoyment in a tight, refined package. A fine local choice.

This stout is an oily near black, some brown just showing through the thickly dark body. The brown head is small and frothy, compact and strong as it sits at roughly half a finger for most of the duration, making a moderate show of lacing.
This is a sweeter stout, less of the big roast than many and countering most of the dryness. There's a light note of coffee, but coffee with so much creamer it drowns out the bitterness fortunately and the depth and strength less fortunately.
It's pretty tasty but held back just a little. It has a light roast, some coffee flavors, even a note of oats such as don't come out in an oatmeal stout, and cream, but it's not allowed to reach its full depth and potential. Still, I'd definitely have another.
The smoothness the style is known for is achieved in this beer, with little roast coming from dryness but having enough heft and just enough of a drier aspect to give it the balance and character it needs.

Black body with a rich, tan head. Coffee, charred grain, and chocolate in the aroma. The taste reflects the aroma with the addition of bitter black walnut and hazelnut and a very faint vanilla presence; terse hop bitterness. Medium-heavy feel; slick and oily with a semi-dry finish.
This felt more like a dry stout to me. It's packed with dark, welcoming warmth. Plenty of roasted character in the smell and taste and it finishes with a complex offering of delicate malt sweetness and dry hop bitterness and feel. Very nicely done.
