Notes/Commercial Description:
The 'oatmeal' in the name is due the 5% oatmeal in the the grist of this brew. Oats give beer a real thick mouthfeel, something definitely desirable in a stout! Black malt and roasted barley give the beer its color, and coffee-like flavors. If you like thick full-bodied & smooth stout, this beer is for you!

Thanks to ketchepillar for this bottle through trade.
Pous a nice dark black with a lasting soft and creamy tan head. Smell is metallic, but nicely raosty and some ash, sweetness, and coffee as well. Taste is nicely balanced with coffee, soft oatmeal creaminess and a medium roastiness and light body. Drinks very easily, but not too thin, still. Pretty good, and I actually liked this one quite a bit more than expected. I felt it was pretty underrated.

Had this at the brewery, was served with a thick dark creamy brown with a nice tan head with good retention.

Smell was mostly dark roasted malts with a touch of coffee flavors coming out.

Taste was a nice mix of coffee, hints of bitter chocolate, and a slight sweet creamyness that I really enjoyed.

Mouthfeel was to thin for a beer like this and is the one aspect that holds if back.

Drinkabillity was good, in fact I planned to bring some bottles home with me from the brewere, but unfortanetly they were out at the time.

Old stout from the BOTM club from over a year ago.

Appearance - Pours a damn dark black into my SA Perfect Pint with less than a finger of head that dissipates almost immediately leaving literally no lacing.

Smell - Chocolate, coffee, and sweet malts. Overall, quite subdued.

Taste - More so coffee than chocolate. Also, there is a definite odd metallic taste that is extremely off-putting.

Mouthfeel - Lighter to medium bodied. Decent carbonation.

Drinkability - Yeah, not feeling this. The metallic taste is just so distracting I can't enjoy this beer. My drinking it now reminds me that this is how the beer tasted a year ago and age did not improve this (that is why I didn't review it then - I wanted to let it sit for a bit). Oh well...a swing and a miss.

Opaque black pour with a nice soft bubbly tan head...recedes fairly quickly to a ring around the top. Some nice lacing as well...no light is getting through here. A very nice robust ground coffee aroma intertwines with notes of dark chocolate and toasted oats. Big, impressive nose!

Smooth roasted, toasty oat maltiness mixes with some nutty coffee tones and hints of bitter dark chocolate on the way down. Just a nice, tasty oatmeal stout overall.

Mouthfeel has a silky smooth creaminess to it with just enough carbonation to make it lively on the palate. This is a stout that I wouldn't mind sessioning with and is a nice suprise as I just picked it up on a whim while I was in Iowa. Recommended.

12 oz bottle obtained from To Your Health (Coralville) in Janurary 2005 and consumed that same evening. Freshness date says November. Pours thick and silent with a half-finger brown head...and with a chocolate smell. Appears utterly pitch black, even when held up to a light. Smell has a nice blend of chocolate and coffee. Taste takes a while to take hold. Chocolate and coffee run around playing tag in my mouth. First one dominates, then the other. What an interesting experience. Hazelnut comes in late and the finish is dry and roasty. Body is medium heavy and carbonation is strong (too heavy for the style IMO). The flavors are really well-balanced in this beer. I find this to be one of the most drinkable stouts I've ever had.

A- Pretty darn near black with some brown highlights and a thick cocoa head that falls flat pretty quickly.
S- Aroma is mild of dark malt and sweet chocolate. Fairly sweet overall.
T- Quite sweet up front for an oatmeal stout. Sweet chocolate, a bit of cookie, a very light touch of smoke.
M- Smooth, medium body with low carbonation.
O- It's a perfectly fine beer, but not a beer that I'm likely to remember. Fairly tasty but relatively pedestrian.

Nearly opaque jet black hue, w/ a hint of hazy deep garnet when held to light. The light brown head settles quickly into a thin layer that leaves sparse islands of bubbles. Sharp, coffeeish roasted barley combined with chocolate malt dominate the aroma... dark caramel malt sweetness is intially subdued but becomes more assertive as the brew warms. Fruity esters are completely absent. The flavor is an appropriate extension of the aroma, although w/ a more prominent malt sweetness. An initial snap of roasted barley bitterness gives way to sugary caramel, then moderate hop bitterness and chocolate malt emerge, lending a bittersweet dark chocolate character mid palate. Light in body for style, but with sufficient dextrins for a smooth mouthfeel. Finishes somewhat dry, w/ roasted grain bitterness lingering. Colony is an enjoyable oatmeal stout, but doesn't possess any outstanding qualities. Although it lacks the "silky" quality of a good OS, the drinkability remains good.

Pours s deep dark cola color with a popping fizzy tan head on top. This "pops" away to nothing very quickly. No lacing. Smells of cocoa, roasted coffee, and warm breads. Decent.

Mouthfeel is a little too carbonated for an oatmeal stout. Not as creamy as I would have liked, but not harsh either. Flavor is of mild roasted cocoa, some bready malts, and some faint bitterness. All in all this is a pretty average beer. Not bad, but not that great.

Millstream Back Road Stout

Dark murky brown with a sticky tan head.
Smells roasty, with chocolate and black malt notes.
Some dry bitterness opens up as this warms, but otherwise this beer is run of the mill...
Little chalky feel, with some oily action and a dry roasty finish.
Overall...  This isn't bad, but it isn't really too great either.

A - Dark black with a hints of walnut and dark ruby hues on the edges. About average sized, smooth, creamy, dark tan/cafe colored head. Decent retention with a nice thin, creamy layer of lace.

S - Wow, lots of coffee and a good amount of roasted oatmeal aroma. Also a good amount of dark cocoa along with some caramel malt.

T - Plenty of dark and milk chocolate and coffee along with some slightly roasted malt and oatmeal. Slight sweetness with only a hint of roasted bitterness. Not quite a sweet stout, but somewhere between a sweet stout and a regular one, with it a bit closer to a regular stout. A touch of caramel malt. Lingers with a not too bitter roasted flavor. Just vague hints of hops and dark fruit.

M - Medium body with about average carbonation. Fairly smooth and slick feel.

D - Good amount of chocolate and coffee that provide a slightly roasted bitter flavor but also a good amount of sweetness. Keeps me drinking, especially big for the ABV.

Notes: A nice easy to drink stout with plenty of nice stout flavors. Not overly bitter, nor overly complex, but well balanced and tasty. This is a very nice, basic, easy to drink stout. Not outstanding, but good.

A - Purple-black with a small but extremely dense brown head comprised of thick whipped luscious cream. Lots of really creamy lace sticks to the glass, and swirling builds he head up quite a bit. Looks soft and pillowy.

S - Creamy chocolate mouse and thick chewy fudge. Cookie dough ice cream with dark chocolate chips. Some firm nutty notes keep things grounded, and some autumn leaf hops add complexity.

T - Coffee with tons of cream and sugar, dark baker's chocolate, cookie dough, and cashews.

M - Ridiculously smooth and silken, full bodied, and creamy....almost airy like whipped cream before settling it's full weight on your tongue.

D - Good stuff! Nothing to complain about here. This smooth drinking stout does everything right an nothing wrong. I like the cookie dough ice cream notes...I don't think I've ever mentioned that in any other review.

Black with a 1 1/2 finger creamy tan head with good retention and lacing. The smell has coffee, oatmeal, raisins, and some dark chocolate. It smells like an oatmeal raisin cookie with a cup of coffee.Where the chocolate fits in with the rest is what I don't know.

The taste has coffee, dark bitter chocolate, and a little caramel. Somewhat sweet, with a good deal of bitterness from the coffee for balance.

Smooth to drink, which is not surprising for an oatmeal stout. Medium bodied with average carbonation and a bitter finish. I have had better oatmeal stouts, but am always glad to try each oatmeal stout I can find. Worth trying if you have the chance.

On-tap at Black Forest Inn; served in a mug.

Seal brown liquid with faint auburn and rufous highlights around the edge. Desert sand foam with creamy lacing and excellent retention.

Lovely dark roast malt aromatics suggest coffee and chocolate.

Deep chocolatey roast malt with hints of coffee and cream and vanilla on the palate. ABV is well hidden. Smooth sweet oat cakes, ganache, and toasted bread crusts into the finish.

Medium-bodied, creamy (thanks to the oats), and velvety.

A simple but excellent oatmeal stout, perfectly balanced.

Came from the Beer of the Month Club. Poured black in color (can't see through it) with a very small tan head; smelled of coffee, mocha, caramel and oatmeal. A heavy beer with very little to no carbonation, that goes down creamy and smooth.

Tastes of roasted malt, coffee, toffee, caramel, a hint of vanilla and mocha flavors; slight hint of grains, which I assume to be the oatmeal. A very malty and enjoyable stout for those who like coffee since the roasted malt flavor dominates this brew. Has a grainy feel to it where the malt/oatmeal almost feel like it's leaving a residue, yet it's a dry finish. Good tasty stout that goes down easy, like water. It's worth trying this beer.

Dark brown with the usual Millstream fizzy and short-live head. The aroma is full of sweet chocolate and roast with a bit of oatmeal. The flavor is fairly big, but comes across as a bit thin. The body is really watery for the style and unsatisfying despite the flavor being pretty good. This brewery’s best beer is definitely the John’s Generations, an excellent witbier.

Black body with a rich, tan head. Coffee, charred grain, and chocolate in the aroma. The taste reflects the aroma with the addition of bitter black walnut and hazelnut and a very faint vanilla presence; terse hop bitterness. Medium-heavy feel; slick and oily with a semi-dry finish.

This felt more like a dry stout to me. It's packed with dark, welcoming warmth. Plenty of roasted character in the smell and taste and it finishes with a complex offering of delicate malt sweetness and dry hop bitterness and feel. Very nicely done.
