Pours out a coppery amber with three fingers of craggy off-white foam lasting a minute, no lacing left behind. Medium-thin body, medium carbonation levels.

Smells mostly of floral and spice hopping with medium strength orange peel and a strange cooked asparagus aroma blended with a caramel malt. Despite being a relatively fresh bottle, it tastes overwhelmingly of an acrid moldy / rotten swamp mud sort of character which was an instant dealbreaker-level flaw. Further analysis aborted, drainpoured.

I recommend staying away from this one.

Millstream Hop(2) Double IPA, Amana, Iowa. No information given, but this on the side of the bottle carrier….um, no, it's too long. Maybe I'll scan it. Oh, and we learn that it is 7.5% ABV. So, let's open it up and find out what's inside.

Deep burgundy coloration, rich, creamy off[white head above.

Aromatics: complexity abounds, rich, malty, pungent. Hops are present, but muddied and indistinct. There are no typical hop aromatics associations at play. Instead there is chocolate, dark fruit, plum and fig and cherry, and oak.

Taste: Hip hops hit at first, a blast of bitterness, then up rises sweet malt to smother it and coat it in chocolate and caramel. I can taste it some on the tongue, but it goes nowhere. Sweet subsumes all.

This really doesn't feel like a double IPA at all. Alcohol is high, yes, but, hops aren't as pronounced as they ought to be, and malt mucks it up. I'm happy to entertain varying and contrasting interpretations of this still very new style, but this one doesn't thrill me at all. I'll finish my 4-pack and forget about it. About $11 down the drain, and here's hoping they improve it some if they try this again.

A - Body is quite dark for being a "pale" ale. It is a deep mahogany color. Just a 1/2 finger of coarse white head forms and fades quickly. No lacing.

S - Lots of candied orange peel, fruity esters and a touch of pine and grapefruit. Caramel and brown sugar. There is also a nice earthy and herbal quality to the nose. Much less hop-forward in the nose than I expected, but this is also an older bottle. I'm sure the hops would be much more potent if I were drinking it fresh.

T - Burnt sugar and sweet caramel flavors are most noticeable initially. In a very interesting twist, I also get a touch of chocolatiness (as if they might have used some chocolate/carafa/black malt etc.). There's no other word for it but a "pleasing" bitterness follows shortly afterwards to temper the intense maltiness. I get a bit of lemon, orange peel, and dank earthy hops (I use "dank" in the best sense of the word). Finish is both bitter and sweet with the bitterness lingering much longer.

M - Medium-to-thick body. Quite sweet and malty which provides for a bit of a "sticky" mouthfeel. This is somewhat reflected in the finish where I am left with some residual sugars clinging to my taste buds.

Overall - I really wish I had taken the time to review this beer when it was at its freshest. I decided to give this beer a couple breaks in the aroma/flavor department considering this and I plan to review this again next year with a fresh bottle.

This beer pours a cloudy amber color with a lot of visible sediment floating around. The head is half an inch in height, and recedes quickly into minimal lacing. The aroma is of grapefruit, pine, and biomass. The taste is of rotten vegetables with some bitterness in the end. It is down right awful. The bitterness helps hide the rotten vegetables a bit, but they still take over and ruin the beer. The mouthfeel is full bodied with a smooth texture, and moderate carbonation. Overall, I will not be drinking this beer again, and based on the six beers I've had from Millstream I can't see myself trying any more of their beers in the future.

Thanks Dave.
Sweet fruit aroma that is not citrus - more like apple and strawberry. Pleasant, but certainly not intense in any manner. No hop oil quality or burning sensation to the eyes. Sweet fruit with mild malt background.
Looks like style. Dense thick off white head. Darker cloudy body.
Ample lacing.
Atypical hop presentation, although flavors are closer to traditional flavors than the aroma. Immediate warmth to the stomach, so it carries some alcohol. Rather complex hop flavors with earthy, grassy, mildly sweet, little flowery, little herbal, and some citrus that then lead to a growing but never overdone bitterness approaching grapefruit with tartness. Interesting. Full malt background adds heft to the body and support for the hops. Full nearly rich body with a big feel that seems on target for style. Gritty almost.
The aroma is the best part - nicely done and unique. The rest is more middle of the road, but on for style.
This is a pretty fine, acceptable and enjoyable beer. I'd have another without hesitation.
