Here we go again. I am not a wheat beer lover. However, Millstream has won me over again. First with their doppelbock and now with this extreme wheat beer. This Weiszenbock opened with a little puff of white smoke and poured a nice enough hazy beer that is better described as a murky orange with some brown hues. Very yeasty looking thing that is darker as you look down the glass. I put mine in a nice Belgian style chalice. This is my kind of beer these days. The whitish head was kinda weak with little lacing.

The aromas are just marvelous. Oh yeah! Fruity spicey cloves arose to the nose. Apples and bananees!

This tastes strong, rich, dark wheat beer and the cloves and fruity spices rage on. This warming beer that I highly recommend. A Belgian beer lovers delight.

This wheat beer will go down well with some ECM series style Jazz. I would recommend Jan Garbarek Dis would be fine selection. Time to mellow out baby. Kudos to Millstream!

Limited?? Oh no!

A : The color of light prune juice, with an egg-crate-foam yellow head. The head disappears fairly quickly but leaves a small ring on top. The opacity of the body is about 80%.

S : Green apple, plum, black grape, with a delicious yeasty aroma as well. Can't wait to taste this.

T : Deep and rich flavors of bready malts, yeast, some fermented plum, blood orange, and a touch of dead grass. A breath of hot alcohol and piping hot yeast comes right at the swallow, bringing steam and attitude into the finish.

F : Light bodied enough to drink easily, creamy enough to think on it. A highly electrified buzz of carbonation kicks in underneath to give lift to the well-balanced body. It ends with citric acid and hop bite.

O : This is an outstanding Weizenbock. I can't believe this was only brewed once. If I find it again, I'm buying tons more. Great experience, here.

Edit : After finding and buying several more of these, I'm finding the results vary greatly. Depending on how they were stored (probably), this beer either tastes fabulous or borders on undrinkable with tons of alcohol presence and one noted rotten fruits. I've lowered my score to reflect the variance between bottles. I have 3 left, originally bought 6 more. With the way this beer destroys sobriety as well, it's worth noting that this beer SHOULD be amazing, but at times it isn't. The "head" drunk you get from this is pretty insane.

Sampled last Friday night on 6/19/15. Comes in a 12 ounce bottle with no 'Best By" date marked on the back label. Bottle chilled down to 36 degrees F in my beer cooler and poured in to a 'Texas-style Das Boot".

Brew pours a darker amber in color with a good almost 2-finger foamy off-white head that lasted some time. Lots of sticky lacing is seen when sipped. Aroma is of sour wheat with cloves and bananas. Bit more going on with the taste as there is some orange zest and some dark fruit also. Slightly 'boozy' taste also. Does finish with a slight bitterness. Overall it was OK. Medium+ bodied with good carbonation.

From tasting notes: a little wheaty sour on the nose, hazy chestnut, ¼” head quickly dissipates to a film, bread, dark malt, no discernable hops, slight touch of banana, no clove, medium carbonation, medium full body, bread, well done.

Poured out a murky, brown color with a small, short-lived head of foam. It smelled smoky with some banana aromas. It tasted slightly smoky with banana, caramel and spice. It was crisp and smooth.

Pours out a lightly-hazed chestnut brown color with a two finger head that fizzles back down to nothing at all in about a minute and a half, leaving absolutely no lacing whatsoever...although I suspect I may partially be to blame for pouring too cold.

The nose is somewhat unusually high on toasted bread and nutty English Brown Ale character for a Weizenbock and the boozey hotness in the finish is too big, and I can't really find any aniseed....but that's the point at which I run out of things to whine and complain about. The banana and cloves are both there, working in tandem with the wheat tart-sweetness, I get some light dark fruit esters at play in both the nose and mouth, the body is on the heftier side of medium and smooth, and the carbonation levels are just about right for the boldness of the flavors contained within. Not bad, but not amazing either.

Bottle from Hyvee in Council Bluffs, IA
No bottled on date (there is a month for notching, but none notched)
Poured into a standard US pint glass

This was an excellent-tasting weizenbock, giving Aventinus a run for it's money in that department. It was, however, rather average in appearance and aroma, and the alcohol could be turned down a notch and nothing would be missed, I think. This is an above-average weizenbock based on tasted, and a good value as well, but could use a bit of clean-up for the next brewing season. One I would pick up again.

Pours a 1cm head of small, fairly dense dark tan to light brown bubbles, which quickly effervesce into nothingness, leaving no residuum atop the beer's body, or any lacing on the glass. Body is a dark brown color and cloudy due to adding of sediment; light brings out amber hues on the sides of the beer. Some carbonation is visible along the sides of the glass, but it is slow and sluggish.

Aroma, while the head it still present, yields fairly pleasant caramelized sugar, brown bread, and ripe banana scents, with a slightly metallic, iron-like edge. When the head dissipates, though, which it does rather quickly, the only scents I pick up are very faint caramelized sugar, ethanol, and that iron-like scent. While I expect the aroma to be less prevalent once the head has reduced, it's atypical that this much variance emerges.

Taste opens with caramelized sugar, rich brown bread, overripe bananas, and a touch of yeastiness. The front of the palate adds additional dried dark fruit esters to this, such as brown fig and date. By mid-palate, sweetness and caramelized sugar have become dominant flavors, with bread, yeast, and bananas hidden in the background. Ethanol becomes apparent in the back of the palate, delivering both its characteristic flavor and allowing for the appearance of some dried cherry-like esters. Fades out with a flash of ethanol, leading to a lingering caramel-like sweetness with a bit of yeast and brown bread. Good, though turning down the ethanol a bit might not be a bad idea.

Beer is medium-bodied with a slight bit of wateriness around the edges, which is somewhat surprising. Carbonation is fairly low for the body's weight, leading this to sitting a bit too long on the palate. Ethanol burn is definitely felt on the tongue, back of the throat and in the nostrils. The resultant mouthfeel is smooth and flowing, but a bit sharp due to the ethanol burn. Finish is semi-dry, with substantial stickiness on the palate afterwards.

A dunkel weizenbock that pours a cloudy brown color with barely one finger of head that settles slowly to a thin cap. Not much for lacing is left down the weizen glass. Glad to see they put the yeast in the bottle.

More on the clove side of the weizen spectrum. Wheat comes out strongly along with a faint hint of banana.

Strong wheat flavor comes with this beer. The yeast adds more of a spicy clove flavor with just a slight banana hint. Some alcohol sneaks into the finish. Finishes dry with a lingering wheat flavor.

This has a big body for a wheat beer. Has good carbonation that gives a smooth texture.

An impressive weizenbock. The flavors might not be as clean as the German greats, but a good effort.

Nice change of pace. Never had this brewery but I found this at Brick's in Blaine MN. Pours a nice ruby brown with a khaki head and decent lacing. The smell is of clove, dark fruit, nuts, and banana. The taste is similar, with a distinct nuttiness and strong bitterness. The mouthfeel is a bit disappointing, kind of watery and thin for the style. Overall, above average and a nice beer.

Pretty active, murky chestnut, minimal head fades fast to a ring and leave no lacing.

The yeast definitely screams "German Weizen," and offers up some of the expected clovey hues, but I don't get any banana. It's pretty one dimensional in that the yeast is very dominant. Maybe I get a little malty sweetness underneath, but the yeast is so strong that I'm not actually sure at this point. ... okay, it opens up a bit later on, and the banana and bubble gum come through clearly. And maybe I detect a whiff of musty noble hops. Some gentle heat emanates as well.

There is more complexity in the taste, at least at first. I notice some black tea like graininess, malty sweetness, and even some faint noble hop bitterness. But the yeast is dominant, as in the nose. While apparently one dimensional at first, the flavors come together later and balance well and with some synergy and moderate complexity.

Strongly carbonated, thinnish medium body, mildly viscous with some gentle warming and drying leading into the finish.

It's good to see Millstream branching out into more styles, and this is one I like. But I think it's also a difficult one to do really well. So, while I am happy and more or less obliged to try it, I have a hard time seeing myself choosing it over Aventinus when I'm in the Weizenbock mood. But it's pretty good. Not amazing, but respectable. So I guess if your budget is tight, and this costs a bit over half what Aventinus costs, it's not a choice.

I poured this one into a shaker pint.

Appearance- The body is a darker brown, looks like melted caramel in a glass, very murky. The foam is very filmy and is only a slight ring, the color of khaki.

Smell- Really strong notes of coriander and banana. It is also a little earthy, peppery, and buttery. Honestly, this smells like a cross between a wit and a hefeweizen.

Taste- Same notes as the nose. Strong on coriander and banana that is common in Belgian offerings. A little bit of that buttery character is noticed in the finish. A little bit of zing from a grassy and earthy hop.

Mouth feel- This beer is medium bodied and very slick.

Overall- I enjoyed the beer, but the really strong Belgian notes threw me off. That is not what I was expecting. This beer is a nice sipper that will work if you are a fan of hefe's or wit's.

Appearance: Cloudy brown, good head.

Smell: Nice smell, banana bread.

Taste: Exactly how I like my weizenbocks, nice sweetness, plenty of banana bread flavor, nice spicing.

Mouthfeel: Substantial but not too heavy.

I picked up a four pack at the brewery while in Iowa over Thanksgiving week. This is an excellent weizenbock that looks and tastes like Aventinus. Good stuff and highly recommended.

Serving type: Twelve-ounce bottle. The notch for the born-on date along the side of the label is between the “O” for October and “N” for November.

Appearance: Poured into a 300 ml weizen glass. The color is spot-on weizenbock: cloudy, dark caramel brown. One finger of thin, fizzling head (much like pop) dissipated quickly to leave a thin, galaxy-esque film, a ring around the edge, and trails of foam on the glass. There was a ton of yeast caking the bottom of the bottle, and it remained even after a couple swirls. I do not think I have ever seen that much yeast sediment.

Smell: Boozy like a weizenbock, but it also features fruit sweetness: almost ripe banana (turning yellow, but still a bit green) and green apple. There is also a nice clove bite along with a little pepper spice. Caramel sneaks in, as does lemon citrus and a thick, yeasty, fresh-from-the-oven bread quality. After a while, a touch of bubblegum emerges.

Taste: B-double O-Z-E, booze! It is very noticeable upon first sip, but gradually hides behind the other flavors. It was still there, stinging my taste buds, and is still prominent, like the really tall guy in the team photo, but it does allow the other flavors to emerge as the beer warms. Banana, green apple, clove and pepper spice, yeast, bubblegum, lemon citrus, and caramel make an appearance, and even balance the alcohol toward the middle of the glass.

Drinkability: Though boozy at first, it turns into a solid weizenbock. I have to agree with the other reviewers that this is, so far, my favorite of the Extreme Series.
