Appearance:Jet black with a tan head that leaves a very weak lacing

Smell:Smells like toffee and a hint of vanilla... no pumpkin IMO

Taste: The mouthfeel is thin and subdued. more toffee and malt not getting any pumpkin or spices

Drinkability: It is not something I would seek out again

Got the Great Pumpkin in a snifter.

Black body with just the slightest cola highlights. The ecru head recedes from a finger's width to a thin ring.

Incredibly cloying, this nose is a dead ringer for the imitation bing cherry nougat you find in some candies. A little bit of almond extract too. Whoa, I can't sniff that anymore, so sickly sweet.

More of that imitation almond flavor on the palate. Some syrupy fudge flavor swirls in as well. A mineral water and earthiness is added in the finish. That incredibly cloying nose carries over to the palate as well, but thankfully it is not as strong as on the nose.

Watery feel and a little sticky. That mineral-y, cloying finish lasts far too long.

Everything about this beer tastes imitation or artificial. Forget about Pumpkin. Where? What is this? It is closer to some kind of cherry - almond ice cream, and the kind you would buy in the big bucket from the bottom rack of the freezer section.

Serving glass: Poured from bottle into Snifter.

Appearance: Black with moderate tan head that mostly dissipates. Standard Imperial Stout look.

Smell: Chocolate, molasses, vanilla, gingerbread and rum. Sounds good, but something slightly odd about the overall mix.

Taste: The taste is even odder. There are definite Stout qualities, especially chocolate and molasses. There are also definite Pumkin Pie qualities with ginger, cinnamon, whipped cream and nutty pumpkin. However, it really doesn't jell, and the mix is almost medicinal and sickly.

Feel: Creamy and smooth full bodied beer with low carbonation. The finish, like everything else, is just a little off. But the mouthfeel is still a strength.

Overall: Odd. Sounds like it should've great and the list of flavors sounds interesting, but just doesn't quite work.

Poured from 12 oz. bottle into a Surly Darkness chalice glass.

Appearance: Pours a dark oily black with a moderate amount of bubbles. About two fingers of tan head that fade into a thin patchy layer. Leaves a decent amount of lacing.

Smell: Spices leap out right away with big hints of ginger, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Dark roasted malts with hints of dark chocolate, dark bread, caramel, toffee, and a little coffee. Big scent of brown sugar and some molasses. Some pumpkin is there as well. Quite an interesting aroma. Sweet but not overwhelming.

Taste: Like it smells, a sweet stout with a heavy fall spicing. Dark roasted malts with a taste of chocolate, toasted bread, caramel, toffee, coffee, and biscuit. Some syrupy molasses and brown sugar. Big spice presence with cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg. A fairly light but noticeable taste of pumpkin. Hop presence is faint. Pretty good overall.

Mouthfeel: Heavy body with a moderate level of carbonation. Creamy and fairly syrupy. Sweet but not cloying. Alcohol is hidden well.

Overall: This surprisingly was pretty good. Its pretty sweet but the sweetness wasn't overbearing. The spices were an interesting mix with the dark stout.

Poured into a Pumking Goblet....

A - Pours black with a giant carbonated head, very much like a cola.
S - Sharp, bitter and slightly sour aroma.
T - Metallic, bitter, artificial flavor on the front end with coffee at the back end.
M - Highly carbonated, cola mouth feel.
O - Glad this is being retired. This is a highly carbonated stout with artificial flavors. That does not sound like a good combination. This beer is not for me.

Pours a deep coffee brown - near black, topped with a short-lived light mocha head that fades out to a collar within a minute. Very precise lacing.

The nose is stuffed with nutmeg, pumpkin flesh, mud, brown sugar, fresh wood, something else that I can't quite put my finger on. Something ain't quite right.

Ironically, the first thing I notice is the aftertaste - dirty vegetables, like taking a bite out of a gourd before it's even harvested. The traditional pumpkin beer traits are muddy and sporadic without any support from the mouthfeel. They must have used something goofy to achieve the pumpkin qualities they were looking for because, again, something is off... especially noticeable in the finish.

I really, really wanted to like this. It sounds like such a tasty concept - an imperial pumpkin stout. I think they missed the mark here though unfortunately.

A: Dark with brown/amber hues. Big fluffy head. Rather nice looking beer actually except the effervescence is out of place. 3

S: Took me a while to figure it out, but it smells like homemade caramel apple dip (including the green apples). If you're not familiar, that's caramel, brown sugar, vanilla, and cream cheese...Also reminiscent of a pumpkin chai latte, except there's a strong green or floral perfume element that carries through. 3

M: Overcarbonated, which is odd to me because reviews from last year said the same thing! I think it's bottle conditioned, but still. Figure it out Millstream! It's actually a bit thin for an imperial stout though, so maybe they're trying to make up for that with carbonation? 2.5

T: Spiced pumpkin brown ale. Not sure why I expected different, but the flavors just do not quite work. The major detractors are the odd floral perfume from the aroma, plus a harshness that I think is coming from roasted malt. It's possible that some aging would help tone down the spices. but the bitterness is a flaw in the brewing process. My guess is that it tasted more or less how the wanted when they bottled, but it dried out in the bottle leaving an overcarbonated and unbalanced beer. 2

D: The flavors are quite shocking at first, although I did find it drinkable after my palate "adjusted". I would never ever love this type beer, but I expect a lot more from Millstream. It's technically flawed, more like a Menial Pumpkin. 2

Serving type: 12-ounce bottle. The notch on the side corresponds to the second “J” for July — at least I think that is a notch.

Appearance: Poured into a tulip glass. The color is opaque black; zero light passed through when I held it to a lamp. One finger of creamy, tan head dissipated to leave a thick ring around the edge and a spotted skim of lacing.

Smell: It smells like a very chocolaty Reese’s peanut butter cup — or maybe a Dairy Queen Blizzard with pieces of Reese’s. Lots of chocolate, peanut butter, vanilla, molasses, pumpkin (yes, I think it is in there), pumpkin pie, and a hint of booze.

Taste: The mouthfeel is thick and creamy but the flavors are subdued compared to the aroma. Chocolate, roasted malts, molasses, and pumpkin pie. There is a hint of booze and each sip leaves a slightly spicy aftertaste.

Drinkability: It is an experience. It is not something I would drink a lot of but it is something that should be experienced.

App- This poured out a bit of a mixed brown color with some yellow highlights around the edges and even the sides. The center was a bit dense and had a deep color behind it. The head was a quick receding head with only a couple dots of cling.

Smell- It was just off to me. Overly sweet like it was a pumpkin liquid they poured in the fermenters and just ran with it. The stout aspect was there with a bit of a mild malt flavor and maybe some roast behind it.

Taste- It was okay. A lot of the beers flavors comes from what I would call a false flavoring and has a bit of pumpkin, some nutmeg and a little chocolate. Just a bit too sweet and off flavored.

Mouth- A way to thin body with a light medium carbonation. A bit like vanilla extract on the residual flavoring being a touch sweet.

Drink- It was just okay. A ticker is ticking states and this was IA. So at least its done.

I enjoyed Millstream's back road stout, so when I saw the imperial pumpkin, being a huge fan of pumpkin beers, why not?

Poured a deep dark brown with a mocha head, it looks quite promising, delicious.

Smell..cherry cordials. And I don't like cherry cordials. It certainly doesn't smell terrible, but it doesn't smell like anything remotely pumpkin. I'm not getting any pumpkin, no nutmeg, cinnamon, allspice. Uh oh..

Taste..not good. Cherry bubble gum. Some type of chocolate candy bar. Again, cherry cordials come to mind. Not very good ones either. This isn't good. There's nothing remotely pumpkin about this and it's not even a good imperial stout.

Oh well. What to do with the other three bottles.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a small chalice.

A: Opaque, dark brown color with one finger of diminishing mocha-tinted foam head. Light lacing remains on the glass.

S: Graham cracker dominates the smell, seriously toasty, with some rather solvent-like vanilla also present. The impression of sweetness, combined with the vanilla, gives an impression of frosted yellow cake.

T: Begins very off-dry, with earthy cooked squash and coffee-influenced roast. Bitterness develops early, seemingly tied to the dark roast as well as the early hops additions. Acidity is high into the middle where pie spice flavors develop against the surging bitterness. The finish is remarkably earthy and green-herbaceous, with bitterness taking a surprisingly early dive to reveal some gentle brown sugar-remnants related to the malt bill.

M: Thin to medium viscosity, acidic and slightly syrupy on the palate, with moderate carbonation.

D/O: While it is somewhat better in the final tally than some of its component parts, this beer is far from an ideal pumpkin stout. The most enjoyable part of the flavor profile is the finish where the different qualities finally begin to cooperate. It is likely that the score for taste would be even lower, were it not for the honesty of the finish.

Appearance: Pitch black, one finger tan head, good lacing. No signs of over carbonation here.

Aroma: Medium intensity roast with a hint of pumpkin pulp

Flavor: Up front I get something weirdly vegetal, almost what I imagine the stem of a flower tastes like. Then some roast, touch of chocolate and a seasonal spice finish. The overpowering weird upfront flavor is pretty much throwing it all off for me.

Mouthfeel: Medium+ bodied, but dried out by the roast and spice.

Strange aroma of burnt corn syrup and smoked sausage. Roasted flavor is minimal but leans toward burnt sugars and over-dried prunes. Strange nutmeg and earthy spice that I can't put a name to hits the tongue middrink. Minimal pumpkin quality. Poorly balanced. Just a tad overcarbonated.

You may have heard of the word "bilious." It means the feeling of nausea you get when you consume something disagreeable. The old beer advertisements once advertised that their beer fought "biliousness" (Schlitz, in particular). Well, here is the first beer ever in the whole wide world that, instead of relieving biliousness, actually caused it!! This beer is not only sickeningly sweet with barely a hint of pumpkin (there's nothing remotely resembling anything that came from a pumpkin in this beer, not even the stalk...), it is hyper-carbonated to the point that within 10 minutes of taking my first of roughly five sips of this beer (I really could barely believe my own tongue), I got a belly ache which persisted 30 minutes past the time I took my fifth sip of this insipid brew. Avoid it all costs, no matter how cheap you might find it at the liquor store...and it IS cheap. Let me give you one concrete example. Upon first careful pour, the beer, poured into a standard pint nonic, over-foamed the way a glass of warm Coke would do. Fully 45 minutes later it still had a 1/4" layer of foam over the top of it...and believe me, I wash and rinse my glasses with great care, so this had nothing to do with soap or detergent or any kind of residue of any kind, aside from what was present in this "beer." NO BEER I have ever seen poured into a glass held its carbonation that long to such a degree, and believe me, that is NOT a positive! This beer, aside from making me physically ill, is a tribute to only one thing: how a modern brewery can make a product so bad and fool people into buying it by appealing to their cost-savings gene. It is the height of an industro-brew which is to say there is nothing handcrafted or even palatable about it. I cannot forgive Millstream for even bothering to put this offensive product on the market.

Picked up a 12 oz. bottle on a Labor Day weekend trip through Iowa and Illinois - late August Pumpkin beer? Curious about this... Poured to a pint glass on a cool, overcast early October day, back home in Portland, OR.

Label: "Stout Brewed With Artificial Flavor" :-

A: Very dark - a rich chocolate brown with a 1/2 finger of mocha head. Gold hold, very dense and clingy.

S: Vanilla (candle) scent hits upfront then a sweet cocoa, that I can only liken to Hershey's syrup. Cocoa butter, too... a bit like tanning lotion... very odd, nothing at all 'pumpkin' as far as I'm concerned. 'Artificial'? Indeed, it is.

T: A head-scratching lack of what I consider to be the staples of 'pumpkin' beers (at least the fake, tasting/smelling ones). Lots of fudgy cocoa, more of that syrupy/sugary molasses-based sweetness. There are hints of vanilla and some cinnamon... spice is able to cover a roasted dark malt and caramel only so much.

M: Mellow and creamy feel, more candy and chocolate and a bit waxy. Bitterness grows in the finish and provides a fairer balance.

O: NOT a 'pumpkin' beer like I'd expected; it's a decidedly sweeter/'dessert' beer - one that has a place... maybe. If you like a cocoa-forward stout then this may be your thing. It's frustrating to see an orange label and a prominently displayed pumpkin, but to feel cheated out of any real pumpkin flavors or spices, even if they're of the 'pie' variety...which I generally like. I didn't pour it out, but wouldn't buy again either.

12 bottle into an oversized wine glass

Ap- looks pretty nice...tan head about 1/2 inch with fair retention. Dark dark brown in color and not see through at all.

Ar- first I smell some pumpkin rind, some grassy notes, earthy, some roasted malt.

T- some dark fruit up front, followed by pumpkin, a bit of spice and some slight chocolate flavors and some roasty malts

M- a tad bit thin for a stout but just a tad. Creamy with good carbonation for a stout.

O- pretty good pumpkin beer, better than a lot I've had. Not the best but a good pumpkin beer nonetheless.

From a 12 oz bottle into a Mason jar flashed a foam over even with a slow tilted pour, aside from that everything looked great. The aroma was leaning toward real pumpkin flesh with some roasted notes peeking through..a fake sweetness is present in the aroma which leads the taste following...IF YOU LET IT...I'm sorry but I've read enough bashing about any Pumpkin beer...here's what I got from this brew, fresh pumpkin taste wrapped around a solid Imperial Stout...for a Fall beer in the spirit of the season this is a nice offering that tasted great, good price and is close enough to be fresh...looking forward to whatever MILLSTREAM releases next!

First impression....very "vegetal"...both on the aroma and the taste....some mild cocoa...body is creamy but never threatens "imperial" territory....maybe this is how a true pumpkin beer tastes? I do not know...most are heavily spiced and this one is not.

Nothing real "off" or anything....just different...there is no writeup on their website which is very disappointing...if you are going to bottle it at least give us the low down on what it is...no description on the bottle either...not horrible but I won't buy again....sounded like it had promise but overall only slightly average at best...

Sampling right now on 11/16/14 after that bad Vikings/Bears game. BOO! LOL. Bottled chilled down to 36 degrees F in my beer cooler and poured in to a handled-glass stein.

Brew pours a very dark brown, almost black actually as you really can't see through it. A good 2-3 finger off-white foamy head is seen that stays around for a while after the pour before finally settling down to a good 2 to 3mm. A decent amount of sediment is seen at the bottom of the bottle after the pour. Lots of lacing is seen that sticks to the sides of the glass, like a good German brew. The aroma is of dark roasted malts with a hint of pumpkin. Pretty much the same for the taste with some spice coming through as well as a hint of black coffee. Some bitterness is noted for the finish that lingers a bit to long. Little more than for my liking. Needs to be a bit more sweeter also in my opinion. Close to being medium-bodied with good carbonation. Overall, it was just 'alright' at BEST, as the bitter finish didn't help it any.
