Deep copper in color with a ring of tan foam coating the edge of the glass.

Sweet and very smokey, but has a strong band aid smell also.

Smokey, woody, malty sweet, strong hops, a bit boozy. The smoke and sweetness is the main focus in the flavor department though.

Close to a full body, a bit slick with low but soft carbonation.

I'm a huge smoked beer fan and they are at their best when they have a malty sweetness to balance the smoke. This one is exactly that, plus it has hops. Truly a smoked barleywine. Original and well priced at $2 a bottle. Hope they make this yearly as it's tough to find a good smoked beer.

Appearance: Red, good head, but chunks of yeast aren't very appealing.

Smell: Nice, sweet, smoky, cured meats.

Taste: Moderate caramel sweetness with a fair amount of smoke. A bit of fruitiness--grapes. Moderately smoky finish.

Overall: I wasn't sure who this was brewed by until I saw Amana, IA. I like rauchbiers and I really like barleywines so I picked up a 4 pack. It's an interesting beer, the smoke is prominent but not too heavy, and there's the BW sweetness in the background. The grape notes could have pushed this too far into boozy malt liquor off flavor territory, but stayed in check. Worth a shot.

This ale was poured from a bottle and had a light amber body colour. The initial smell was pretty potent; It had an artificial breakfast smell reminiscent to the Rogue Voodoo Doughnut Maple Bacon beer. There was a pungent oakiness with a slight sweetness as well.

The beer tasted exactly like it smelled. It had an upfront sweetness which moved into a smokey, lingering bitter roast. This definitely left a strong smokey aftertaste in the mouth.

Would I buy this beer again? It did grow on me after awhile, but no.

I decided to edit this review after letting the bottle sit for a couple months.

One thing I have noticed is that the smokiness subsides somewhat after letting the beer warm up a bit. I definitely recommend taking your time drinking this if the smoke is initially too intense for you.

A - Body is deep ruby-brown with copper highlights. Slightly hazy, but I let some yeast sediment sneak into the glass. About 1/2 finger of head forms but fades quickly. No lacing.

S - Lots of smokiness in the nose - sort of a sharper, more vibrant smoke aroma that would pair well with sausages and sauerkraut. As the beer warms up, I notice that underneath the layers of hickory and peaty smoke are darker, fruity notes, reminding me this is indeed a barleywine.

T - The smokiness is the big player in the flavor profile as well. If you like rauchbier, this is most definitely a beer for you. Up front, I get caramel malt and some earthy, bitter hop flavor. Shortly thereafter I get flavors of earthy peat smoke and lighter beechwood smoke. With warming, more caramel and fruity ester flavors come through, which rides all the way through the finish. Medium amount of boozy warmth and peppery alcohol in the finish.

M - Thick body. Syrupy and sweet with lots of residual sugars. Boozy when allowed to warm up a bit.

Overall - I think this has the potential to be a truly excellent smoked beer, and it is very interesting to have barleywine as the base beer. My only suggestion to the brewers at Millstream is to either dial back the smoked malt a bit, or increase the caramel malt--then I think they will have a very balanced and accessible fusion of smoked and barleywine style ales.

This is only my 2nd smokey brew and probably my last. I know this is a barley extreme thing, but the extreme element is smoke here. Even the appearance has a smokey hazy look over the amber reddish hue. However, your senses will be overwhelmed by the sweet smokey campfire smokiness. This is not a fast drinker. this is a slow sipper for a cooler evenings.

Sips well with slow jazzy sounds such as Frank Sinatra Sings For Only The Lonely or KD Langs Drag.

Wow this is pretty unique, and surprisingly really good. Dark brownish-red with very little head. Smell is almost all smoke; smells like a very peaty scotch. Taste is dominated by smoke, not necessarily in a bad way, but there is also a decent malt backbone. At first I was able to detect a little hop presence, but soon the smoke overtook it. I suspect the base of this beer (without the smoke) would make an awesome american barleywine. Overall I really enjoyed this. If I didn't know better, I would have thought this aged in a scotch barrel.

If you enjoy peaty scotch, I highly recommend trying this.
