12 oz bottle from TJs. Pours golden with foamy whit head. Nose id of grassy hops, bready malt and hints of caramel. Body is medium and crisp. Grassy, herbal hops dominate the palate; bready malt and grain provide some balance. Finish is long, herbal. Not very good brew with unpleasant hops profile. I would not by this brew again. (331 characters)

Nice shiny copper penny color with excellent clarity. A fingernail of light beige covers a third of the top. Brussels lacing. Aroma of amber malt with a grain like bready note. The taste is amber malt with a nice German bittering hop in the back of the palate. The mouth is smooth and quenching. (300 characters)

12 oz bottle stamped best consumed before: 3/7/15.

Pours clear amber with a modest off-white head that soon settles to a ring and partial film on top of the beer.

Smell: has a strange, unappealing moldly-flowery aspect.

Taste: some of the off-aroma carries over the flavor, but it is better than the smell suggests and carries some toast, caramel, and mild bitterness.

Feel: Medium-low level of carbonation; too hot for 7% ABV.

Overall: disappointing. (459 characters)

Appearance: Clean golden with a prodigious head of off-white suds. Attractive, loopy lace.

Aroma: Malty, sweet, grains and yeast. Not bad.

Taste: Sweet and malty with some rich caramel notes, and a sharp, tangy, and spicy hint. I get a slight dryness at the finish. Not bad, but not one I’d return to. (305 characters)

Josephsbrau Heller Bock
12 oz. brown glass bottle, "BEST CONSUMED BEFORE: 05/10/15 13:13"
$1.17 @ Trader Joe's #766, Tampa, FL

Of all of the Trader Joe's beers this is probably my favorite (with the exception of their Vintage Ale and Providential Golden Ale made by Unibroue). It's a clean, straightforward helles bock that's got just the right amount of maltiness to it so that it's not too thin, too full, or too sticky. And it's got some decent floral and spicy hops in the flavor as well. The head retention and lacing could be a bit better, the aroma could be slightly fuller, and perhaps the malt quality itself, but as far as American brewed versions of the style go it's top-notch. With that said, just getting a malty 7% abv beer for $1.17 ($28 for a case) is next to impossible! (790 characters)

New found option at Trader Joe's poured into an oversized wine glass. This new Helles pours a deep golden with a half inch of nearly white foam. Offers decent retention and some spotty lace.

Aroma is grainy and with some noble hops in the mix. Lighter in color and more hopped than I recall the original Hofbrau Helles though I assume simply a fresher or tweaked recipe is in order from GB. Flavor is spicy on the finish with a touch of lemon and coarse spice, lightly sweet and with a firm carbonation Yeast note expand a bit with warming on the aroma and combine with muddled lemon bread and a light hint of alcohol.

Offers a firm and steady hop delivery regardless of agitation in the glass. Distinctive German character yet with more than average intrigue. (763 characters)

From the 12 fl. oz. bottle. Sampled on March 15 , 2014.

The color is medium amber to copper with little to no head.

The aroma is basically of caramel malts an d biscuit. Mild hop character.

The body is medium.

The taste was fairly routine for the style with some caramel malts and crisp. Clean hops. Nothing special. (320 characters)

Poured from a bottle into a Celebrator pokal. Pours a medium coppery amber with a thin white head that dissipates to light patches and thin ring around the glass. Aroma of sweet caramel and bready malt, hints of lemon and toffee. Flavor is sweet caramel malt, light lemon and toffee and grassy hops. Medium bodied with light carbonation. An adequate, mild take on a heller bock without much character to the hops, hits the right notes in the malt profile. Delivers on its purpose: an inexpensive, nicely made domestic heller bock. (531 characters)

JosephsBrau Heller Bock has a very thick, off-white head, thick lacing, a clear, deep golden appearance, and a few noticeable specs suspended in the beer. Aroma is of sweet, somewhat syrupy, barley malt, and the flavor is of strong barley, white bread crust, and subdued hop bitterness. Mouthfeel is medium, and JosephsBrau Heller Bock finishes mostly dry and very easy drinking. Well, for a strong, store brand lager (malt liquor), this is a winner.
