Gold in color with a fingernail of white head covering a this of the top. The aroma is fairly subtle and is mainly light malt. Where are the hops? The flavor is initially the Herman hops but it quickly fades into buttery diacetyl. Yargh. The mouth is light and smooth. (274 characters)

This pours a light tan gold with poor head retention.
Not much of any aroma, even as it warms.
Flavor has a touch of bitterness and a light "grain" finish. Forgettable but not offensive. Pairs well with popcorn. (211 characters)

used this one for cooking beer cheese soup, decided I'd pour it in a glass and give it a try to make sure it was worthy to cook with. appearance was great with a nice fluffy 3/4 inch white head, golden in color with lots of bubbles, taste is clean and refreshing, not to sweet like a lot of lagers has a slightly dry after tastes, I'd buy this again if I were ever in the mood for a pilsner. (391 characters)

Poured from a 12 oz brown bottle into a Samuel Adams Perfect Pint glass. Besrt by 10/27/14 on back label. Purchased at Trader Joe's (Charlottesville, VA).

A: Clear light golden hue with 1-2 fingers of white, tightly bubbled head with good retention and leopard-like strips of lacing.

S: Light sulfur up-front with a bready light pilsner malt aromas and nice but subdued spicy, herbal noble hop note

T: Favors the malt over the hops but is nicely balanced. The bready, lightly toasted pilsner malt character is spot-on with a delicate dash of herbal, spicy hopping. Esters are not there. I don't get any diacetyl but I have a high threshold.

M: Very crisp with light-body and higher-than-expected carbonation.

O: TJ's Bohemian Lager is a really enjoyable beer and throws serious doubt into my plans to start homebrewing lagers when this can be purchased at 5.99 a sixer. (875 characters)

JosephsBrau Bohemian Style Lager has a thick, off-white head, a clear, bubbly, golden appearance, and lots of rather heavy lacing left on the glass. The aroma is of sweetness, biscuit, and grassy hop oil. Taste is of those elements, as well, and the bitterness is substantial enough to impress. Yeast is picked up, too. Mouthfeel is light to medium, and JosephsBrau Bohemian Style Lager finishes dry, easy going, and refreshing.

From the 12 fl.oz bottle with a best by date of 07/17/14. Sampled on March 13, 2014.

It begins with a mostly yellow to golden yellow pour that erupts into a modest white fizzy head and settles back almost as quickly. I would have liked it to be headier.

The aroma is in step with the style with pale biscuit malts, barley, grass but there is this buttery sensation that kind of crashes the party.

Light body for the most part but smooth.

For the taste I get the same biscuit and malt characters up front along with the butter but there is a more vibrant clean, crisp hop finale that gives it a new lease on life. (616 characters)

A: Borderline straw/golden. Some haze. Vigorously carbonated with large bubbles rising to the surface. Finger of bleach white head. Rapidly dissipating. Looks fairly pedestrian.

S: Smells that way, too. Lot of doughy malt in the nose. Borderline diacetyl. Some nondescript herbal hop characteristic, but this one definitely runs sweet.

T: Runs sweet through the mouth, too. Grainy, again a little doughy, with an unexpected pop of hop bitterness on the very end. Nothing over the top, but it is noticeable. It quickly fades and the aftertaste herbal and slightly vegetal.

M: Amply carbonated. Perhaps a bit high strung. The bubbles are vigorous and come off a tad seltzer like.

O: Nothing to write home about. Strictly average. Still, for 6 bucks a sixer you can do worse. (780 characters)

12oz bottle with a best by date

Look is a paleish yellow, clear, with a small bubbly head. Smell is corny, grainy, with a little bit of metal. Taste is clean and pleasant, with sweet malts and a touch of stale hops. Feel is light and effervescent.

Good enough. (262 characters)

Bottle poured into pilsner glass

Clear golden yellow with carbonation. Two finger thick white foamy cap with nice lacings.

Aroma of malt with grassy hops. Bit of spice.

Smooth , light mouthfeel. Bitterness on the sides and back on the finish.

You can see what style Budweiser is trying to emulate in a beer like this. Clean, light , golden yellow with a great head. Quaffable but not a lot of complex flavors. Nice, pleasant and a beer that I would drink again but would not go out of my way to stock up the fridge. (521 characters)

A standard pour of Josephs Brau Bohemian Lager yields a typically golden body and a thick, 2-inch head. Unfortunately, the head has less staying power than one would hope. Carbonation is slightly more intense than I expect from a lager. Bubbles are large and cling in large numbers to the side of the glass.

The nose is malt-forward. Hops are appreciable only after a bit of warming and a few swirls around the glass. The swirls do help to open up the beer's aroma, which comprises an appealing mix of toasted bread, lemon, and faint notes of lavendar.

My first sip is too sweet. Too much malt asserts itself and the bittering hops, though almost immediately palpable, are unable to stop the malts from sticking to the palate. Hoppy flavors do assert themselves. Sometimes flavors of apricot, honey-roasted rosemary, and sweet basil manage to suggest themselves. But for the most part, the sweet malt just masks them. The beer's heavy mouthfeel follows its malty flavor profile.

The powers-that-be at beeradvocate.com might do well to reconsider how they have classified this beer. I'd say that it is a Munich Helles Lager, not a Czech Pilsener. One can easily be misled by the words "crisp" and "refreshing," which appear prominently on the bottle, and which are typically the differentia specifica of Pilseners. I wouldn't use either of these words to characterize JB's Bohemian Lager. That said, I'd gladly drink another bottle. This beer was too sweet, but tasty nonetheless. (1,483 characters)

Poured into a Seattle Beer Week pint glass. Pours a light to medium golden amber with a half finger white head with decent retention and lacing. Very light aroma of biscuit malt and slightly spicy, grassy hops. Flavor is mild, slightly sweet biscuit malt and very light grassy hops with hints of the background crackery malt in the finish. Light bodied with nice carbonation. A very light version of a pilsner lager with all the flavors dialed down. Pleasant and actually quite nice with lunch, but pretty much what you'd expect for a decently made cheap domestic German lager style. Nice for the price but approaching mass market beers in tameness. (649 characters)

12 oz bottle poured into pint glass

A: head starts off great, .5 finger bone white head, but like all their beers, quickly settles to almost nothing, beer is gold with light hints of orange with great clarity

S: Almost no aroma to speak of, a slight skunk but even that seems mild

T: For a Pils its lacking hop flavor, their other Pils is better (but not by much), all I taste is skunk, not super strong, but there is almost nothing else going on

M: Pleasant, mild dryness, light-medium body, super easy to drink

O: There is nothing "wrong" with this beer, give it to an unassuming, not-picky beer drinking on a summer evening and they won't even pause to think twice, however as far as a craft pilsener goes it doesn't taste like anything. Again, no off flavors stand out (other than the purposely added skunk), but there is just nothing here. (851 characters)

12 oz bottle pours a clear gold color with an ample cap of white head. Decent retention and lacing.

Nose is honeyed grains and maybe some buttered popcorn. Hops are not really in evidence unfortunately.

Taste is not half bad, mostly grainy with a little biscuit. Light hopping is there, but only if you look hard for it. Malts are a little sweet, this one really drinks more like a helles lager as opposed to a Czech pilsner. Mouthfeel is average for the style and goes down super easy. For the price this is pretty hard to beat, cheaper than a sixer of Bud - yes please, all day. (583 characters)

Pours clear gold with about one half inch of white head and no lacing.
Smell is mild cracker grain and a bit of spice from the hops.
Taste is a balanced spicey hops with plenty of sweet maltiness.
Mouthfeel is a bit lacking in carbonation and a slightly wet finish.
Kind of a generic taste may slightly resemble a Czech Pilsner. Sort of a generic version. Maybe a good one to introduce your Bud Light buddies to something different.

Update: July 5, 2015. Must be a much fresher version. Will have to raise the ratings a bit on look, smell, taste, and overall. Was 2.68 total before now 3.15. Nice easy drinking summer beer that is a good value as well. (655 characters)

bought at Trader Joe's in Pittsford on 3/23/13. Price $ 1.09.

poured from a 12 oz bottle into a mug, served at fridge temp.

appearance: medium butterscotch yellow with a 1 finger natural white head. Some lacing but not much.

aroma: pale malt with a subtle spiciness from the nobles hops.

mouthfeel: decent for a Pilsener.

taste: pale maltiness is followed by balanced hop attack, finishes fairly dry and clean.

notes: like the Josephs Brau Vienna this is a style perfect beer without flaws that is very easy to drink. At the price this could become a Summer staple. (571 characters)

color is like goldenrod wit ha large bubbly head. the nose is sweet with distinct honey notes. very enticing. the taste begins with the same honey-like malt then a slight grassy and citrus rind hop edge with a semi-dry finish. smooth and pleasant, perhaps a bit sweet. i think very nice for the style, except again perhaps too tame on hop presence to balance sweetness. (369 characters)

Pours a chill-hazed deep golden with a half inch cream head that dissipates fairly quickly, leaving sheets of lacing.

Bready, toasted caramel malt and a touch of skunk are the only elements detectable in the aroma.

Flavor is fairly sweet, with caramel malt forming the backbone. There's an offputting metallic element underlying the profile. The finish is a bit bitter. Floral hops emerge late.

Body is a little watery, with moderate carbonation and a decidedly astringent finish.

Metallic flavor kills the brew. Fairly nondescript, otherwise. (547 characters)

I still have nothing to do for the next few days, so time to start drinking some of my Trader Joe's beers. First up is this one. 12 oz bottle poured into a beer mug.

A: Pours a golden amber color that's cloudier than I expected from a pilsner. The head is a fairly unimpressive one finger eggshell color with low retention and texture quality. Decent lace, though.

S: Grassy hops and a bit of fruit. Not exactly impressive.

T: Rather lacking in flavor in general. There's an opening generic bitterness from the hops, but afterwards...its just empty. There's just nothing there! Maybe hints of malt and butter in spots, but this is just like drinking carbonated water. On the plus side, it lacks (most of) the unpleasantries of something like Budweiser.

M: Thin texture with no real finish to speak of. Carbonation is high but tightly controlled.

O: It's not a good beer, but it IS at least very drinkable, basically because it's beer-flavored carbonated water. A decent enough lawnmower beer, I suppose - given its price, it could be an adequate BMC substitute for those who have a Trader Joe's near them. Personally, I wouldn't care if I never had this again. (1,165 characters)

A: Pours a crystal clear medium golden yellow in color with light amounts of visible carbonation. The beer has a quarter finger soapy white head that reduces to an extremely thin film covering the majority of the surface of the beer and a thicker ring at the edges of the glass. Moderate amounts of lacing are observed.

S: There are aromas of grainy malts with some lighter notes of corn sweetness. There is something slightly off in the aroma of this beer that might be metallic in nature. Additionally there are light hints of grassy hops.

T: Moderate flavors of bready and grainy malts with a slight metallic hint (similar to having coins in your mouth). Light to moderate flavors of grassy hops with some light lingering bitterness.

M: Medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Crisp and clean.

O: Not really anything special but certainly a decent beer considering the very reasonable price. Easy to drink and sessionable but not one that I am likely to buy again. (983 characters)

I bought this six-pack expecting a cheap lager, but I was pleasantly surprised with its flavor and depth. It certainly makes a decent first impression, with a slightly hazy, bright golden yellow color and a thin but persistent eggshell-white head. The aroma is subtle but pleasant, with a characteristic musty noble hope character over a light, toasted bready sweetness. The flavor is likewise muted but mostly enjoyable, with a duller but still present hop profile and a more biscuity malt characteristic. The texture is somehow both a bit watery/thin and also too resinous. Overall, though, although a bit dull, this beer is reasonably satisfying and drinkable. (663 characters)

A: The beer is clear yellow in color and has a very light amount of carbonation. It poured with a quarter finger high white head that died down, leaving a thin layer of bubbles covering the surface and a collar around the edge of the glass.
S: The smell has aromas of grassy hops along with notes of buttery corn.
T: The taste has flavors of bready and grainy malts along with notes of butter and a light amount of bitterness.
M: It feels medium-bodied and clean on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer is easy to drink but seems to have an off taste compared to others in the style. (609 characters)

Bought at Trader Joe's in Spokane, WA. Average head/foam. Left 3-4 rings down the side of the glass. Poured into a pint sized standard beer glass. The taste was average for this lager. Nothing hoppy or overpowering but none the less an acceptable beer for $5.99. I prefer Trader Joe's Bohemian lager to their other brands. I thought it had a nice crispness to it as one would expect with a clean lager or pilsner.

I read a lot of negative comments on this beer brand but if you are expecting higher quality beer then you know you will have to pay more $$. (557 characters)

12 fl oz/355 ml brown glass bottle with standard pressure cap served into a conical Guinness pint glass in me gaff in low altitude Los Angeles, California. Reviewed live. Acquired at a nearby Trader Joe's for cheap. Expectations are average; Trader Joe's beers tend to be surprisingly flavorful. Best before: 05/09/2012.

Served refrigerator cold.

A: Pours a one finger head of slight cream, fair thickness, and average (~2 minute) retention. Colour is a clear somewhat dark yellow. No yeast particles are visible.

Sm: Somewhat nutty, actually. Spiced malts. Stale cream. Smells like a Spanish lager: Vol Damm or the like. A mild to moderate strength aroma.

T: Somewhat nutty, with dirty malts forming the foundation. Some strange spice. Stale cream. No real layering. It's exactly like the garbage Spanish lagers I tried in Ibiza. Not at all subtle nor complex. I don't care for it. Poorly constructed for a Czech Pilsner. No yeast or alcohol comes through. The finish is awful.

Mf: Smooth and wet. A bit too thick. Adequately carbonated.

Dr: Drinkable but boring and unremarkable. I wouldn't have this again. Pretty forgettable and crappy. Low quality. It's priced alright, but rather garbage.

A: single finger head on a clear golden with a slight amber hue with nice lacing.

S: mostly malt, fairly strong, some breads

T: very malty with nice rye notes and a subtle sweet lemon custard like finish. Not very balanced but not bad.

M: light to medium body and moderate carbonation.

Overall: this one is easy to drink. The flavor jumps around a little but still fairly flavorful for a czech pilsener. (407 characters)

Poured this Czech Pilsener from a 12 oz bottle into a pint glass. It poured a hazy golden color, produced a thin white head, poor retention and only small amounts of lacing left behind. The aroma was nice full of biscuit and malted grain. Medium in body, this Pilsener has a base of biscuit malted grain, some herbal notes and it finishes dry. Overall, it is an average Czech Pils but nothing makes it stand out. Prost! (419 characters)
