Presentation: 355ml (12 fluid ounce) standard looking brown glass bottle. The letters ‘T’ and ‘J’ sit aside a sheaf on an appropriately color coded yellow crown cap. Main label and neck label has the words ‘Bohemian Lager’. Described below as a ‘Crisp Refreshing Lager’. The reverse label has the Batch Number as '08:24 12/23/04 592', plus the following Beer Stats: 5% alcohol by volume. 18 Bitterness units. Fermented using lager yeast.

Appearance: Excellent looks I have to say. Pours with a nice big frothy white head with lots of creamy lacing. Archetypal golden Pilsner body, yet this one has only a few lone rising streamers but it is perfectly lucid. When gently tipped it exhibited below average carbonation levels I thought. Head longevity is decent enough for the 12 ounce bottle; it never popped below ¼” thick. Lacing is quite impressive.

Nose: Crispy biscuit malts, lots of grain and a very light sweaty hop character. The grainy malts get stronger as the beer warms.

Taste: Grainy powdery lightly toasted malt feel, strange sweetness that I cannot place. Finishes with a soft and delicate bitterness that has a cut-grass feel. Standard lager profile that is very heavy on the grainy malts and very low in the bitterness department, though as the label states this is only 18 IBU’s so that should not be a surprise.

Mouthfeel: Low carbonation gives this Lager minimal conditioning and a subsequent ‘lacking’ feel on the tongue. Bodyfeel is much lower than expected, resulting in a thin feeling watery libation.

Drinkability: Pretty quaffable, clean tasting but the grainy feel is a little too much for me in the long run.

Overall: A classic “3.0”. Satisfactory, I most certainly was not expecting anything to WoW me here, so I am neither disappointed, nor impressed. Moreover, I finished this with a “thought so” feel. I only picked up the two bottles as part of a mixed six-pack of the four new TJ brews. As ever, it is well priced and as such I think that this would make a really good party or BBQ beer for those guests that you wish to weed off the big three with something different…but beyond that it has limited appeal I feel.

Purchased in St. Louis Park, MN Trader Joe's by some thoughtful customers of mine, who hand delivered them. How sweet.

Clear, pale yellow look, bright white foam, swiftly settling.

Aroma is largely empty, slightly vegetal, but clean, there's a good word.

Brisk carbonation at the fore, tidy hoppy bite, then, again, Cleansville. But not in such a good way, but in the abscense of flavor. Not bad in any means, maybe a touch too lemony in the taste, and the finish, but not awful. But, not being bad isn't good enough.

If this were really cheap, maybe there could be some justification, but I personally would not choose to drink this again. Too lifeless and flavorless. Blah.

Purchased for about a $1 per bottle at Trader Joe's, Maple Grove, MN.
Very clear yellow pour, minimal head.
Smells stinky, like Heinekin. I guess the maltiness would grow on some people. Tastes like Heineken, but with less aftertaste.
A bit nutty, then finishes clear.

Nothing special, so I won't buy it again.

Gold in color with a fingernail of white head covering a this of the top. The aroma is fairly subtle and is mainly light malt. Where are the hops? The flavor is initially the Herman hops but it quickly fades into buttery diacetyl. Yargh. The mouth is light and smooth.

pours golden yellow with quick dissipating white head. Pretty much no smell on this one. Not too sweet and a hint of some maltiness. A strong apple flavor that almost gives it a apple juice flavor. Light and drinkable . overall an ok beer but I probably wouldn't buy it again.

Appearance: This beer looks like carbonated gold water. Average head retention and lacing. Nothing exciting.

Smell: Very faint smell of hops and lemon.

Taste/Mouthfeel: I definitely detect an attempt at giving this beer a grassy Czech pilsener taste. It's ok, but not great. Unfortunately, there is definitely a watery feel.

Drinkability: An average beer.

Overall: See drinkability.

Poured this Czech Pilsener from a 12 oz bottle into a pint glass. It poured a hazy golden color, produced a thin white head, poor retention and only small amounts of lacing left behind. The aroma was nice full of biscuit and malted grain. Medium in body, this Pilsener has a base of biscuit malted grain, some herbal notes and it finishes dry. Overall, it is an average Czech Pils but nothing makes it stand out. Prost!

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a pint glass

This beer pours a crystal clear, pale golden/yellow with a pillowy white head that recedes quickly and leaves very little lacing.

Very mellow, small nose consisting mainly of malty sweetness with just the slightest hint of spicy hops. Not really much here in the way of aroma

There is a slight bready, toasty flavor that mixes well with the overall malty sweetness. Very small spicy hop profile. Crisp and dry and very pleasant overall, but not really a good example of a czech pilsener.

I enjoyed the beer overall, but would have liked to have seen more hop presence.

Picked this up in San Fran at a trader joes that sells beer (thanks PA)...

Pours from the bottle a straw gold, thin head.

Smell is weak grainy malt, mild hops.

Taste is a bit of biscuity, grainy malt and mild hops.

Mouthfeel is thin, light lingering flavors.

Actually pretty drinkable, but like a bit more hop bite in my pils.

This pours a light tan gold with poor head retention.
Not much of any aroma, even as it warms.
Flavor has a touch of bitterness and a light "grain" finish. Forgettable but not offensive. Pairs well with popcorn.

Clear gold appearance. Average beer aroma, nothing setting it apart or to style.

Taste, straight forward, not bad, not adventurous. Prickly carbonation in place of hops, kinda true to style. Just doesn't taste like a whole lot, for better and for worse. This is the purgatory between BMC and craft brew. Hook this up for a friend who is looking to get initiated into something beyond diet beer.

Presentation: Poured form a 12 oz brown bottle onto a standard pint glass. Label depicts some European row houses and lists the stats of 5% ABV and 18 IBUs. Batch number, but not readily translatable into a bottling date.

Appearance: Pours with just over 1 finger of nearly white head. This settles, eventually all but completely disappearing. A few wisps of light foam, here and there. The beer itself is yellow, perfectly clear, and shows moderate activity. No sediment int he bottle.

Smell: Sweet caramel malt with hints of bubblegum ester.

Taste: Strong carbonation bite upfront leads into a weak, husky malt middle. Finishes sweet, with a distinct caramel note and some Saaz spice.

Mouthfeel: Higher than average carbonation level, which is rather appropriate for the style. Body is okay.

Drinkability: Meh. A relatively true to style beer, but nothing exceptional. As with most of Trader Joe's beers, this one is solidly in the middle of the road.

A new Trader Joes opened up in my neighborhood on 72nd Street on Broadway on Manhattan's upper west side. I had heard a lot of good things about their beers. They seem to have a number of brands: The basic "made in mexico" brand. The Mission Street, which is a collaboration with Firestone Walker. And the "german" series, which this is part of.

I didn't understand the negative reviews of this beer until I had it. I usually think of a much brighter, hoppier beer when I think of pilsner but this was really not much different from a mexican beer. The vienna lager, which IS a mexican beer is more interesting. I'll enjoy it with Chinese, etc., but it is not what I'd consider a good pilsner.

Mouthfeel- Medium to higher carbonation level with a slight bitter aftertaste.

Drinkability- Just your average pils. Happy to have tried it though.

A: Pours a crystal clear medium golden yellow in color with light amounts of visible carbonation. The beer has a quarter finger soapy white head that reduces to an extremely thin film covering the majority of the surface of the beer and a thicker ring at the edges of the glass. Moderate amounts of lacing are observed.

S: There are aromas of grainy malts with some lighter notes of corn sweetness. There is something slightly off in the aroma of this beer that might be metallic in nature. Additionally there are light hints of grassy hops.

T: Moderate flavors of bready and grainy malts with a slight metallic hint (similar to having coins in your mouth). Light to moderate flavors of grassy hops with some light lingering bitterness.

M: Medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Crisp and clean.

O: Not really anything special but certainly a decent beer considering the very reasonable price. Easy to drink and sessionable but not one that I am likely to buy again.

12 oz bottle poured into pint glass

A: head starts off great, .5 finger bone white head, but like all their beers, quickly settles to almost nothing, beer is gold with light hints of orange with great clarity

S: Almost no aroma to speak of, a slight skunk but even that seems mild

T: For a Pils its lacking hop flavor, their other Pils is better (but not by much), all I taste is skunk, not super strong, but there is almost nothing else going on

M: Pleasant, mild dryness, light-medium body, super easy to drink

O: There is nothing "wrong" with this beer, give it to an unassuming, not-picky beer drinking on a summer evening and they won't even pause to think twice, however as far as a craft pilsener goes it doesn't taste like anything. Again, no off flavors stand out (other than the purposely added skunk), but there is just nothing here.

12 oz bottle. Poured a golden yellow with a thin, short lived head. Lively carbonation. Aroma of herbal hops and biscuit malt. Light to medium body. Flavor of mild herbal hops balanced by biscuit malt with some citrusy notes. Finish is long and slightly bitter. Not bad for the price, but should be much more hops for the style.

A: The beer is clear yellow in color and has a very light amount of carbonation. It poured with a quarter finger high white head that died down, leaving a thin layer of bubbles covering the surface and a collar around the edge of the glass.
S: The smell has aromas of grassy hops along with notes of buttery corn.
T: The taste has flavors of bready and grainy malts along with notes of butter and a light amount of bitterness.
M: It feels medium-bodied and clean on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer is easy to drink but seems to have an off taste compared to others in the style.

Pours a clear golden beer with just a bit of head.

Smell is clean with a bit of grain malt and hops in the scent.

Taste is on the dry side with a fairly sharp hop bitterness. Mostly the flavor is light with a crisp hop bite to it. It is a rather basic Pilsner.

Mouthfeel is OK.

A basic drinkable Pilsner, nothing to go out of your way to get. It exists as an OK beer that doesn't cost too much.

Pours a chill-hazed deep golden with a half inch cream head that dissipates fairly quickly, leaving sheets of lacing.

Bready, toasted caramel malt and a touch of skunk are the only elements detectable in the aroma.

Flavor is fairly sweet, with caramel malt forming the backbone. There's an offputting metallic element underlying the profile. The finish is a bit bitter. Floral hops emerge late.

Body is a little watery, with moderate carbonation and a decidedly astringent finish.

Metallic flavor kills the brew. Fairly nondescript, otherwise.

Much closer to tangerine than gold, with corn silk hued highlights and a light shower of downward drifting yeast. The bone colored crown is bubbly on top and just sticky enough to leave a bit of itself on the sides of the glass.

Name aside, are we sure this is a Czech pilsener? The nose is more lightly corny pale lager with very little hoppiness. 18 IBUs (when fresh) indicate that hops aren't the main focus by a long shot.

Not a bad little pale lager. This is a decent choice if you have the right mindset going in. It's balanced, it's easily drinkable (read: inoffensive), and it should pair up well with most foods. Not great solo, but then what do you expect for a buck?

Untoasted bready grains are the flavor focal point... and I'm still getting a faint corniness that isn't unpleasant. Lightly sweet is nicely offset by lightly bitter. The hops are close to grassy, but don't scream SAAZ! with every sip. No real high points and no real low points equates to... average.

The mouthfeel does what it needs to do. A tendency toward wateriness on the back end almost dragged the score down one notch, but the bubbles have precisely the right amount of lightly sparkly energy.

Trader Joe's beer is surprisingly good, all things considered. Bohemian Lager, while not one of their best, isn't a bad choice for warm weather cookouts. Beats the hell out of what you're likely to see in the vast majority of backyards this summer.

Picked this up today at TJ's new location in Cary along with a sampler of his other brews. I consider myself a conniseur (sp?) of the style, even if I can't spell the word. Let's see how an American supermarket that prides itself on frugal imitations deals with Bohemia's pride and joy.

Pours a golden straw with a thin but everpresent crown of white froth and a remmarkably robust carbonation count. Nose is Saaz bittterness almost to a tee, slightly metallic but not half bad.

The hop presense is there, if a bit neutered, but its the moutheel that really lets this brew down. Too watery, despite all the bubbles. The aftertaste is metallic and lifeless. Bitterness shouldn't mean hurting the tongue but this one does. This is about what you pay for and little else. I'll have a Budvar, please.

Pours a deep golden color with somewhat large off white head, lacing is also present. Nice looking beer.

A pretty non descript smell slightly metallic and maybe a hint of hops.

The taste is pretty thin for a pilsner. Not much to speak of in the way of malt. A light hop bite in the finish along with a metallic taste. The finish is fairly dry and clean.

A fine light carbonation suits this beer well and improves the drinkability. Almost any beer this dry is gonna be drinkable.

This is a fairly average to below average pilsner. It is a bit light on the hops and malt for my taste for the style.

Part of a mixed-bag of brews I picked up recently at my local Trader Joe's. In discussions with other SoCal BA's it's been decided this brew and others under the "Trader Joe's Brewing Co." name are probably brewed by the Gordon Biersch brewpub in San Jose. The 12oz bottle had a batch number of 11:08 12/23/04.
Poured into a pilsner glass, this beer had a clear golden color, a good level of carbonation, and a fizzy white head that rather quickly settled down to a thin crown.
The nose had a decent grainy malt aroma and a real modest floral hops note. Seemed more sweet than herbal or citrusy. The taste was somewhat sweet and grassy. The hops were seriously downplayed. Can't say I really found much in the way of hops here at all. The feel was headed for the medium side of light, crisp and refreshing.
Overall, this was a pretty in-offensive beer. On the back label it stated that Bohemian Lager weighed in with 18 IBU's, explaining the serious lack of any bittering. Still, certain elements made this rather appealing. The feel was nice and made it easy to quaff. I really wasn't expecting a whole lot here. At least I wasn't turned off and disappointed.

Pours golden in color with brilliant clarity. Little head to speak of following a medium pour. Some lacing on the sides of my glass, but not much.

Pretty mild aroma. A touch of grain and some sweetness also being detected. I'm not a big fan of the sweet smell.

A combination of hops and carbonation (mostly carbonation) hit the palate first, followed up some malty sweetness which rounds things out. Not as crisp as I like my Pilsners.

Mouthfeel is on the thin side with a moderate carbonation level.

An average Pils overall.

Morey's Bottom Line: Not the worst Pils that I've had, but the lack of crispness coupled with the overdone sweetness makes this not worth spending money on. I'd drink it again, but it would have to be given to me (and this was).
