A - Light and murky with a fairly thick head.

S - Smells like banana and wheat.

T - Not one of the better Hefeweizens out there but for $1 it's hard to beat.

M - Pretty good body, especially for such a cheap beer.

D - On a hot day this is a pretty good option.

Pours a cloudy gold with a fluffy white head.

This reminds me of a standard hefeweizen, nothing spectacular about this (aside from the price). I'm getting bananas, cloves, a slight metallic taste(?) and a particular aftertaste that I'm not too fond of (but can't pinpoint).

Overall, metallic taste aside, I have no complaints about this beer. Normally I wouldn't get it again - but the price might just call me back ;)

This Hefeweizen was a little darker than other Hefeweizen's that I have had before. It had a strong orange appearance and contained a lot of sediment. Overall its flavor was not as sweet as I have experienced with past Hefeweizens. Strong wheat and citrus aroma with a slight banana aftertaste.

Poured a bright and hazy medium copper hue with a two ginger frothy white head. There was good retention and lacing.

The smell featured yeast esters - clove and banana.

The taste consisted of a balmy sweet malt, wheat spice, and a touch of metal.

The mouthfeel was a bit full for the style.

Overall a decent hefe at a great price.

Pours a tad hazy light brown color with a frothy one inch cream head that dissipates slowly, leaving solid lacing.

Banana, clove, orange, and wheat begin the aroma, which is fairly sweet. Coriander and a hint of diacetyl add intrigue.

Flavor is fairly citrusy, with tart orange and banana leading the profile, accompanied by wheat and lightly toasted malt. Clove, coriander, and white pepper finish things off fairly dry.

Body is moderate, with fairly high carbonation. It's pretty spritzy.

Standard flavor profile for a hefe. Nothing exceptional. Slight graininess.

Murky apricot with an inverted waterfall of uprushing bubbles on the near side of the glass. The head consists of three fingers of pale khaki colored foam that develops a softly sculpted rockiness as it descends. Love the unfiltered look.

The nose features slightly darker than pale malts (probably a small amount of caramel), cereal grains, bruised banana and clove. The next highest smell score is in sight, but probably won't be reached.

Bavarian Style Hefeweizen is an acceptable version for the price. It isn't about to put a scare into Germany's best... or even America's best for that matter. An estery yeast strain definitely helps the cause.

Flavors include lightly toasted bread, light caramel notes, monkey fruit, a dash of ground clove, and hints of lemon peel that add a little too much tartness. The hefeweizen banan-o-meter score is a respectable 2.5/5.0. Each mouthful leaves me wanting a more well-brewed beer.

The body/mouthfeel favors the light end of light-medium and is too sharply bubbled. The carbonation has settled down to some extent in the 10 minutes since the pour, but it's still borderline annoying. Lush and creamy here might have elevated the scores on either side.

Bavarian Style Hefeweizen isn't a bad choice if you happen to be in Trader Joe's and have a hankering for banana-flavored beer. That said, it's no Stockyard Oatmeal Stout. You're better off sticking with the really good Bavarian hefeweizens that, thankfully, aren't that hard to find in this country.

12oz bottle served in a standard shaker pint.

pours a very hazy dull golden yellow with 2" spritzy head that quickly recedes; not much lacing to speak of. nose is solid but not wowing; offers banana and clove with secondary notes of bubblegum and wheat.

taste isn't bad, follows the aroma pretty closely. a bit on the sweet side with the banana, clove, and bubblegum flavors all pulling through. definitely a wheaty presence. reasonably enjoyable. medium-light bodied with slightly above average carbonation.

overall this is a decent, drinkable beer and a reasonably priced one; nothing more, nothing less.

Beer pours a cloudy dark golden color with a big pillow of white head. The aroma bubbles with clove, banana, even some bubble gum. Light on the palate. Not as chewy as I would expect for a wheat beer. The flavor starts watery, but builds toward the end into something pleasant.

Nothing stands out with this beer, but it is drinkable and enjoyable nonetheless.

12oz bottle poured into a Shaker pint glass. Most of the sediment stayed behind despite a vigorous pour. Best before 02/05/14.

Appearance: Hazy to slightly cloudy amber-orange. Thin off white head. Little to no lacing.

Smell: Mild cloves, hint of yeast, some bananas. Something sweet under it all. Bubblegum aroma very noticeable right after pouring.

Taste: Bananas, wheat grain, with a sweet and dry finish - the sweetness takes on bubblegum as the beer warms up.

Mouthfeel: Highly carbonated - fizzy. Chewy at the same time. Odd.

Overall / Drinkability: Ho-hum. I've had better Hefeweizens. I think I'm completely neutral about this beer. I neither like it nor dislike it but I'll grant that it was interesting to drink. Nice looking beer, but just okay in the taste and smell department. Maybe with the right food it would shine. I probably won't get again.

A standard pour of JosephBrau's Bavarian-Style Hefeweizen yields a hazy orange body with bright yellow highlights and a thick 2-inch head. The moderately sticky head falls too quickly, but does leave behind an appealing gluey cap. Carbonation is too vigorous at first: Sheets of large bubbles cling to the sides of the glass. After things calm down, a handful of thin bubble-streams rise slowly among the brew's evenly-dispersed, fast-rising fizz. I'm interested.

The nose is typical and appealing. Clove is more pronounced than banana, but both are palpable. I picked up some metallic smells in my first sniff, but not in subsequent ones. The brew's flavor should be spicier than sweet.

It is. Clove and black pepper up front, a bit of banana in the middle, and a resurgence of clove on the back end. Subsequent sips give rise to faint notes of lavender and sweet lemon peel in the hang. All flavors are a bit muted.

The beer's mouthfeel tends towards the watery. This is a shame because iIts carbonation is quite nice. The lively fizz accentuates the sharpness of the spicy flavors. A swirl around the tongue produces a respectably viscous foam that is let down by the absence of malts. I wouldn't add too much sweet malt to this brew--doing so would detract from the refreshing crispness that it achieves--but a bit more by way of malty backbone would set it in balance.

Bavarian-Style Hefeweizen isn't the best of its kind, but it is a classic, crisp, refreshing rendition that I'll revisit.

Finally got the chance to go to Trader Joes and pick up a couple six packs.

This style is actually becoming a favorite of mine, for summer pounding, but the two I have sampled thus far were weak for bottled wheat beers. This one hits the mark for good taste/cheap price. At 4.99 a six, I'll be buying this again for a switch up beer.

App: Dark orange, cloudy, not a lot of carbonation, but it's not as yellow as some wheats I've had off the tap.

Smell: It's all here, smells just like a hefe should.

Mouth: Average. a little metallic at the end.

Taste: Typical , yet thin. I had my first one in the bottle, and I had to give this my imperial pint test so I could fully taste/smell, and I didn't like this as much in the glass. Still, this wheat was the same fruity flavor I'me started to warm too, but it was thin , leaving a slight lager aftertaste.

Drinkability: Yep. $5 for a good summer beer. I'll get it again.

12oz. bottle with a picture of what I would assume as a German bier garden. The back of the bottle had a time, batch #, born on date, and some info about the beer. Mine was 08:43, BH 117, and born on 10/17/05. Best part it only costs about $5.00/six-pack.

Appearance: Had the usual Hefe hazy orange color with a nice size head of white foam. But, I thought the head receded and dissipated faster than most and left no lace in my weizen glass.

Smell: It had the usual wheat and cloves aroama, but again what separated this one, was the fact that in the background it had this wet dog mustard smell. I like mustard, but not the smell of it in my beer.

Taste: Good but nothing out of the ordinary. It had the usual hefe taste, but lighter of wheat, some cloves, and with little banana in the background. It's a good thing I didn't taste any of that mustard that was in the smell.

Mouthfeel: The only thing I can say is that it's smooth, crisp, clean, and light bodied. Not to watery either.

Drinkability: This made for a nice decent and cheap American Hefe that you can get at your local Trader Joe's It's just too bad that the aroma couldn't be better.

Pours cloudy orange/gold with a smallish white head. Lacing on the surface. Aroma is assertive wheat- cloves and bananas. Taste has little sweetness. Cloves and wheat tang. Pretty typical but not bad. Light to medium bodied and well carbonated. Pretty easily drinkable. Overall this is a pretty standard hefe. Certainly pretty good for the price.

Poured from a 12oz brown bottle.

Pours a nice cloudy orange color. Decent sized head. There is some yeast sediment in the bottle which took some swirling to loosen.

Aroma is fairly similar to most Bavarian Hefeweizen's that were actually brewed in Bavaria. Lots of nice banana, yeast, and clove aromas. Other spices can be detected with some citrusy smells coming through as well.

Taste is pretty good too. Nice yeast and wheat flavors in there. Some sweetness as well. Also the flavors of banana, clove and other spices and a very faint bubble gum note. Overall the taste is very good but seems a bit watered down compared to imported versions from Bavaria.

This one is surprisingly good, not what I was expecting for a Bavarian style Hefeweizen brewed in America, especially one branded under a grocery store name.

Tasted 10 July 2014.

Pours a cloudy medium orange. Two fingers of white head, good retention and decent lacing. Odd color for a hefeweizen, though.

Smell is over-the-top spicy. It's not like the clovey esters from yeast, it's like they dumped cloves into it to make it smell like this. I can barely detect anything else, save a touch of fruit.

Taste is better, more balanced. But it still has an air of artificiality. It's got some banana, some clove, and some high-in-the-nose bite. Not bad.

Feel is okay. A little on the flat side, and lacking the fluffy quality I want from wheat-heavy beers.

This drinks like an imitation of the style, rather than a hefeweizen itself. It's a decent imitation, but the true colors shine through.

Light orange..cloudy with the swirled yeast..good 1in. head..fades to a collar. Looks like a glass of cider.
Smells like a hefe...light..citrus, yeast..little clove.
Tastes a little lighter than I would like , but not bad at all..the description on the back of the bottle is accurate...banana, clove, bubblegum...a little sweet.Wheat aftertaste...clean.
Light to medium mouthfeel..low carbonation.
Very drinkable.
This is a pretty good American Hefeweizen..and you can't beat the price...$5.29 for a six !

Appearance – Cloudy yellow/orange. Nice head, nice lacing. Did I mention the yeast cloud?

Smell – Aroma is a nice blast of banana and clove when you pop the bottle. Estery.

Taste – Taste is similar to the smell. Banana and yeast esters. Fairly standard. Slight metallic hint. Nice spice at the end.

Mouthfeel/Notes – Creamy, especially for a hefe. This is a solid interpretation, especially for the price. Not a bad one to keep on hand.

A: An aggressive pour produces a 5 finger head that doesn't budge. The head was very creamy initially. This beer is an opaque orange color, like any typical German hefe. The headf izzles down to a cap by the time it is finished, but the head stayed at a one to two finger most of the way through. Ok to low amounts of lacing. 3.5

S: Bubblegum is upfront with some banana esters in the background. Clove is a little muted in the aroma compared to some of the big German hefes, but remains as a strong contender overall. More aromatic than I expected, even a bit citrusy with a hint of german hops to round out the esters. The malt is a bit buried and the aroma lacks a bit of complexity. 4

T: This is a bit of a rollercoaster of a beer. At first, I didn't expect much out of this beer due to it being a Trader Joe's house beer and the ratings here on BA, but after smelling it and seeing it in my glass, it started looking like it could be a good hefe. The first sip was a bit disappointing, the malt is immediately thin and the esters are blown out of proportion; soon after, a sudden metallic-like flavor hits the palate. The second and so on sips reveal an average hefe with a macro-like metallic overtone, though the metallicness isn't too strong to make it an issue.

If it weren't for the thin malt, this beer would be a decent example of a typical run-of-the-mill Hefeweizen. The taste is upfront with bubblegum, banana, and clove-like ester flavors. Hops are unnecessarily muted compared to better German examples. The malt isn't too sweet, but lacks complexity and flavor overall. There is nothing special or groundbreaking in the flavor overall, all of this has been done better by most German-brewed Hefeweizens. 3

M: A tad over-carbonated with a thin body, way too watery compared to other hefes. The body reminds me of Blue Moon, which is unacceptable in a hefeweizen. 2.5

D: Complexity is a bit low and I could get bored of this one after awhile. That said, I could drink another one of these if it was a hot day and I wanted a refreshing beer. 4

O: Nothing new, but a decent hefe for a relatively low price. This beer actually tastes like a German Hefeweizen despite the faults. The flaws kill the ratings here, but I probably enjoyed this beer more than most beers I rate a B/B-. This would be a good intro hefe for those that are transitioning from macros.

Pours a hazy orange, with a fizzy beige head. The aroma features all of the characteristic notes of a traditional hefeweizen, with clove and banana being most prominent. The flavor is a bit sweet, with the esters coming across as banana pudding and bubble gum, but there was also some dry, must hop character to cut the sweetness at least a little. The texture was light and fizzy, which made the beer go down easy, but it lacked some substance. Overall, this beer is drinkable and had a decent flavor profile, which is about as much as I expected and hoped.
