Presentation: Poured a translucent, cloudy dark yellow-orange into a pint glass. A two-inch thick head quickly formed and started to dissipate, but remained pretty well. Scent is heavy with banana and a bit of bubblegum.

Tasting: This tasted slightly heavier than other Hefeweizens I've tried. Banana is the primary flavor, along with sweet malts. There was virtually no hop bitterness. A moderate level of carbonation is present in this beer. Mouthfeel score goes down a little bit because it seems somewhat macro-style harsh to me. It was kind of overwhelming in a way.

I would use this beer to introduce people to the style and get them accustomed to better beer. It's a pretty solid brew at a good price ($5.29 for a sixer). I would probably purchase this again if I were hosting a tasting party.

In a weizen glass.

Cloudy pale orangey yellow with big head.

Smell: Banana, clove, sweet wheat, barley.

Taste: Tangy wheat, clove, banana, slight lemon.

MF is good and right for the style.

Drinkability is good. I like it. The flavor doesn't pale so much in comparison to the nose, as I've found with some other hefes. Excellent beer for the price.

Pours a hazy golden yellow with a nice head with residual lacing. Scents of banana and citrus on the nose. Flavors continue with the lemon banana theme as well as some spice. The first few sips were suprisingly good and I was thinking that I was really going to like this one. As the beer warmed, the flavors became diminished and although it still remained within the realm of a hefeweizen, it lost some its clout. I would still have another as it was better than alot of those Hefe pretenders. Bottle courtesy of Zorro.

poured a cloudy dark wheat color with 1" of head that faded really fast.

smells like a true hefe with strong banana and cloves with a slight hint of citrus.

the taste was not bad but finished spicy, almost like black pepper, expecting smooth creamy sweet finish.

light bodied almost too light

overall a good version of a hefe. light and refreshing a good choice for hot summer day. can't beat the price either

K WinterWonder Lager
guinness extra
Dark Horse IPA

A: An aggressive pour produces a 5 finger head that doesn't budge. The head was very creamy initially. This beer is an opaque orange color, like any typical German hefe. The headf izzles down to a cap by the time it is finished, but the head stayed at a one to two finger most of the way through. Ok to low amounts of lacing. 3.5

S: Bubblegum is upfront with some banana esters in the background. Clove is a little muted in the aroma compared to some of the big German hefes, but remains as a strong contender overall. More aromatic than I expected, even a bit citrusy with a hint of german hops to round out the esters. The malt is a bit buried and the aroma lacks a bit of complexity. 4

T: This is a bit of a rollercoaster of a beer. At first, I didn't expect much out of this beer due to it being a Trader Joe's house beer and the ratings here on BA, but after smelling it and seeing it in my glass, it started looking like it could be a good hefe. The first sip was a bit disappointing, the malt is immediately thin and the esters are blown out of proportion; soon after, a sudden metallic-like flavor hits the palate. The second and so on sips reveal an average hefe with a macro-like metallic overtone, though the metallicness isn't too strong to make it an issue.

If it weren't for the thin malt, this beer would be a decent example of a typical run-of-the-mill Hefeweizen. The taste is upfront with bubblegum, banana, and clove-like ester flavors. Hops are unnecessarily muted compared to better German examples. The malt isn't too sweet, but lacks complexity and flavor overall. There is nothing special or groundbreaking in the flavor overall, all of this has been done better by most German-brewed Hefeweizens. 3

M: A tad over-carbonated with a thin body, way too watery compared to other hefes. The body reminds me of Blue Moon, which is unacceptable in a hefeweizen. 2.5

D: Complexity is a bit low and I could get bored of this one after awhile. That said, I could drink another one of these if it was a hot day and I wanted a refreshing beer. 4

O: Nothing new, but a decent hefe for a relatively low price. This beer actually tastes like a German Hefeweizen despite the faults. The flaws kill the ratings here, but I probably enjoyed this beer more than most beers I rate a B/B-. This would be a good intro hefe for those that are transitioning from macros.

Ugh. I was given a big pack of Trader Joes beer, and this one was a universal downer among my friends and I. There is a weird metallic taste here, in every bottle, that makes you feel like the beer is skunked and/or contaminated. But I have tried it multiple times over a year or so, and it has remained metallic and...odd tasting. I would steer clear of this one.

I really have nothing to say that has not been said about this. Pours nice and cloudy, good carbonation, as you would expect. Smell was weak at be s t, nothing much stood out. The flavor for me was big on banana and clove, maybe a little artificial in their taste. All in all, at its price point is good a good buy, but in general, OK.

when i first opened i thought i detected a slightly skunky smell and was worried, but upon pouring it all the way into the glass and taking a big inhale, it was strongly banana. i was no longer scared that this wouldn't be a true hefeweizen. there was yeast at the bottom to dump into the brew, and it had the right aroma. the taste itself carried the banana flavor, though it was a bit raw. clove came through in the taste as well, but there was not very much spice or zing, i think due to the lack of breadiness and acidity in the malt.

mouthfeel was medium, but neither smooth and creamy nor really aggressive--and i usually prefer my hefes to fall on one side or the other (with an ayinger being on the creamy side and weheinstephaner on the bubbly). the malt flavor just wasn't quite right tho-- the beer just wasn't completely balanced, so the yeast flavor sort of took over all the way and the wheat malt didn't back it up. it just didn't gel--not enough acidity or something. anyway, this was the best of the bunch from TJs so far (still have the bock to try) but since happy monk beer (aka franziskaner) is only a buck more a sixer, i will be sticking with it. the two actually have similar flavor profiles, but i prefer the mouthfeel and the tartness of the franziskaner. it's just a better beer all the way around.

Picked this up at the local Trader Joe's after reading some solid reviews.

A: Pours a hazy golden color with a moderate head, not billowing like on some other hefe weizen I've had.

S: Strong yeast, bananna, and cloves notes

T: Pretty much lines up with the small, a nice combination of flavors that are standard in this style. As it warmed the flavors gave way to more bitterness.

M: Creamy with a bit of acidity.

D: This is definately an easy drinking hefeweizen.

Notes: I have to say that if one the more well-respected German brewers put their label on this, it's score would jump. A nice representation of the style and a great value.

Appearance: Cloudy orange-amber, excessively large off-white head with decent retention.

Smell: Yeasty, with bubble gum, banana, and lemon.

Taste: Sweet, with hardly any hops. Clean malty wheat background, citrus and mild clove notes. Banana esters. Finish is a smooth, nutty yeast.

Mouthfeel: Overly carbonated, with a creamy medium body.

Drinkability: Decently drinkable, and a good value at the price point.

Thick off white head. Lots of fizzy bubbles. Decent retention. Minimal lacing. Cloudy, light golden body. Thick carbonation.

Banana, butterscotch, traditional, yeasty, heff aroma. Moderate strength.

If you like heffs this is very good. If you are not crazy about the style then something like Erdinger is much nicer. Bready. Yeasty. Banana. Butterscotch. Dry, lingering bitterness on the finish. In your face heff flavor. Only somewhat smooth to drink. Heavy.

Somewhere between medium and heavy bodied. Dry, slightly lemony, bitterness lingers. Rich, wheaty, yeeasty beer.

A pretty good heff that is very affordable over at Trader Joe's. Strong heff flavors. A good quality, economy heff for those who really like the style. Can be somewhat off-putting to those not in love with the style.

very hazy on the pour. scent is pretty awesome - nanner, bubblegum, some spices. Taste doesnt quite live up to the smell but the banna/bubblegum taste is pretty interesting. Overall, pretty good beer!

Pretty good beer. Hints of citrus but not overtly so. Interesting sour taste at first and a smooth finish. Although I found that after the second or third beer it began to taste odd or bitter. I don't know why that is, but I will stick to drinking these one at a time.

Trader Joes opened up about a half mile from my house so i went in for a looksee. I'm a wheat beer fanatic so I had to pick up a 6er for 5 bucks. Chimay blue and red were cheap as well, 7-8 bucks. 3 bucks cheaper than bristol farms or the liquor stores. There's nothing wrong with this wheat beer. Its a typical, simple american hefe-weizen. I'd rank it below pyramid but above widmer.

From a 12oz bottle into a glass mug.

A- Cloudy/unfiltered orange gold color. Very small half finger head that fizzles to a ring of froth. Lots of bubbles streaming up. Looks like carbonated Tang.

S- Slightly Metallic, maybe coriander, cloves.

T- Metallic taste up front. Then at the very end after the swallow the other tastes come out. Mostly cloves with coriander. Banana taste. Then some gentle flowery hops.
The aftertaste is bready with grassy hops.

M- Light. Bubbly. Watery.

Drinkability- It's relatively easy to drink due to its light mouthfeel.

O- Overall, this is an ok beer. I don't like the metallic taste up front. That totally messed it up for me. The aftertaste and other taste notes were good.

A: Hazy, amber beer with a disappearing white head.

S: Banana, a touch of clove, and a faint bit of sourness.

T: Banana, clove, touch of sweetness that is well-balanced with the sour.

MF: Smooth; carbonation is high, but not at all unpleasant.

D: Very nice hefeweizen. I will certainly have this one again. Good beer from a great store.

I got this beer in a mystery pack from Trader Joe's (you have to buy one if you never have). This was the first beer I pulled out.

A-Since I am drinking this out of the bottle I reviewed the design. Decent artwork on the beer but I am not overly in love with it.

S-The smell is inviting and pretty strong for a wheat beer.

T-The taste is delicious and reminds me a summer day.

M-A little weak, but we are talking about wheat beer.

O-This beer was just okay with me but did not quite hit the mark I was hoping for.

Color is a nice hazy yellow, an adequate amount of lacing, good head retention.

Smell is good, just like you'd expect from a hefe, powerful clove-like scent.

Tastes like bubblegum; it's like the brewer knew what the essence of a hefe was, and then tried to replicate that. They succeeded, but the beer doesn't really have any subtleties to it. The interpretation is orthodox and somewhat 'obvious'.

Mouthfeel is a little thin, though still rates as average.

Drinkability is great if you like that distinctive hefe taste; this beer goes down easy and is very pleasing on the palate; not heavy at all.

Since this beer is $5 for a sixer, it's easily worth it for the value if you just want a cheap hefe to have on stock and drink casually. A good way to expose people to the style too, if you're bringing this to a party.

Wow, this stuff is actually good. I ppicked it up this weekend because it was the only wheat beer at TJ's and I didnt feel like making another trip elsewhere. It is actually better than just about every other beer I have gotten from TJs (this is not a huge feat).

I pours like it should and tastes and smells mildly of cloves. Some dude says he sensed some bananas, which I can see, but I dont really get it. It is kind of like a subdued Brooklyn Weisse, but it is nonetheless pretty good.

A - Nice unfiltered yellow.

S - Good amounts of banana, cloves, and yeast. Pretty solid smell, nothing too great but good.

T - A little more sublte than the smell, but solid tast.

M - Good amount of carbonation and had a nice spicy kick from the yeast.

D - I will yearn for this on a nice warm spring day, partly from the taste, but mostly for the price.

Buy again? - Yes
Recommend? - Yes
Drink if offerered - yes
Did my wife like it - Uh huh.

Overall - Not the best hef, but for the money and right occasion, a solid beer. It had good banana, clove, and yeast taste, and also the nice yeast kick that hefs usually have.

Not too bad for the price. It's nice to pay $5 for a sixer and get a quality beer. Drank out of a .33 L Sturtzel (sp?). I tell you what, this beer isn't much on the wheaty yeasty twang, and I could not detect any clove, but it sure has bananas and a bit of bubblegum. Not so much to be cloying or anything, but a nice pleasant dry fruitiness. This puppy is very drinkable.

Trader Joe's Bavarian Style Hefeweizen
Trader Joe's Brewing Company
Style: Hefeweizen
ABV: 5.30 %

The best Trader Joe's has to offer, IMO. I light beer with complex flavors - citrus and banana tones and a smooth finish. If I had to get one of their beers I would stick with this one, as I think it is good for all times and occasions.

Appearance: Pours golden-orange, a touch dull if I had to say. Head dissipates to .5 cm quickly and sits at that level.
Smell: Pleasant, typical Hefeweizen smell. Slight clove, leans banana, but not overwhelming. Probably a middle temperature fermentation.
Taste: Like some others mentioned, there is a slight taste of something metallic or coppery. Also, I'd say it is a tad bitter compared to better examples of the style. Otherwise, this has decent taste, which is true-to-style.
Mouth-feel: Good. It is a pretty much as you'd expect from the style. Lingering due to heavier mouthfeel than a lager for instance.
Overall: For the price, it is not bad. If you're looking for the best example of a Hefeweizen, you'd do yourself a disservice by choosing this one. If you're looking for something that is decent and priced well, this one is fine. It's kind if like wanting pizza from your favorite pizza place and settling for Papa John's. It's fine, but makes me wish I were having a better one.

Purchased for 5.99 plus deposit at the Union Square Joe's, not a bad deal at all; poured into a weizen glass.

A- Nice thick head that laced all the way down the glass, a little less cloudy than I would have liked to see.

S- Heavy on the banana and some faint citrus in the back end.

T- So much clove, but in a good way.

M- A little over carbonated, could have been smoother.

D- It went really well with the chicken I was having, could definitely stand on its own as well.

For a dollar a bottle, it's worth picking up whenever I make trip down into the city.

Poured the color of aged grapefruit juice, which is not always bad. It smelled like slightly soured ketchup and regular yellow mustard mixed up. The taste actually made an interesting combination to the smell, the taste of cold, carbonated hot dog water. The strange thing is, the taste grew on me as I made my way to the bottom of my glass. It had enough carbonation to add to the spice notes, which was pleasant. So far as drinkability, I'll finish this glass and be unlikely to revist this.

With this being my first hefeweizen, if this is any indicator of a quality flagship of this style, I gotta scratch it off my list. Any recommendations are welcomed. Thanks!
