12 oz. bottle in a pint glass. Pours an opaque orange honey color with an inch of vanilla head. Retention is good and some spotty lacing follows.

Smell is up front with citrus and banana, then clove and cinnamon. Similar to a hot mulled unfiltered cider with a bit of wheat overlay. I mostly pick up the fruit, no need to add any here. More definitive yeast notes after some air.

Tastes lightly of wheat and finishes with the fruit. Feel is decent but just a touch high on the carbonation, yielding a slightly thin feel yet masking the sweetness that is evident later. Rather citric sweet for the style in an 'additive' type way, limiting the flavor. This citric component helps explain the relatively deep and orange color of the beer. Light in body, moderate in ABV and fruity flavors make for an easy drinking brew, albeit a bit dumbed down for the style.

Poured a yellow with little bit of foam and lots of lace with this hazy yellow hefeweizen. The smell of yeast and citrus filled the nose. The smell of banana is also there. The taste was really different. The taste of yeast, wheat, citrus and a touch of clove was evident. Sour or bland on the finish. Not impressed.

Poured into a weizen glass.

Beautiful colors here - shades of deep amber, gold, and a bone white head that leaves all kinds of lacing. Decent amount of carbonation bubbles are present as well. Nice fruity aroma with notes of lemon and banana with some clove and other spices hanging out as well. Taste is fine, but by no means as good as the smell or appearance. Lemon, wheat, and sour apple dominate the flavor profile. Mouthfeel is full, but a bit watery. Easy drinking here and a wonderful value at $5.99/6 pack - I could drink these all night. Recommended.

Yet another from my 'custom' 6 pack from Trader Joe's.
I am glad that a chain supermarket, though a specialy one, has entered the realm of crafting different styles of beer. It's a great hefe, as far as i am concerned. I am not surprised that some people rated this in the C+ range, since all to often impressions, politics, and branding comes into the equation. I tried to rate this without any of that baggage attached, and found it to be a damn fine hefe, and for the $6 price, a real good buy!

Cloudy gold with fine bubbled head and resisilent pale lacing.

Aroma of spicy banana and clove. A good wheat presence too, as expected.

Taste is solid hefe, with big banana, clove florals, and herbal spicy wheat. Mouthfeel is towards the medium full end, and despite a bit of syrupy clinginess on the tounge, is great.

Drinkability is supurb, my pint emptied itself mighty-quick.

Pours a cloudy orange honey color with a giant white foamy head. The head leaves good lacing and lasts. The smell is pungent with orange, lemon, wheat, clove and banana. The taste is pretty strong with the flavors of lemon, orange peel, honey, bread yeast, and banana very present. The m/f is light with all the flavors mixing well. This is a good beer with no flaws, not great, but all in all, a good drinker that will be great on a hot summer day.

"Finally an Import killer American Hef?" Thats what I thought when I picked up a six pack at Trader Joe's for $5.99. I'm half tired of having to plunk down $8+ per six for the typical import. So lets see:
A. Pours a milky amber, pretty close to what I'm used to drinking. A little darker than typical.

S. Smells good, just like the bottle says cloves and banana, with maybe some yeasty goodness. High expectations!

T. The banana and cloves are overwhelmed by bitterness. Aftertaste reminds me of baking soda. This improves somewhat with as it warms up a bit.

M. Pretty high carbonation, not expecting that. Maybe a little thin.

D. It's too darn bitter and overwhelms what should be a delicate beer. A bit hard to drink also because of the carbonation.

Other comments:
Surprised they got it this close. Maybe a few more years and Gordon Biersch who brew's this stuff will get it right. Until then, I'm sticking with the imports.

12oz bottle with batch # and freshness date.

Big head with good lacing. Orangish color typical to a Weiss.

Smells strongly of bannana, clove, and a touch of caramel?

Tastes very strong Banana. If someone told me it was just a banana wheat beer, I'd buy it. Slight clove.

Thin feel, a little thinner than most Heffeweizen. I cannot see or notice and yeast or wheat sedement, despite it being unfiltered. Others reviewing this beer have, but I don't.

Easy to drink, and CHEAP. Not as good as an import, but cheap as hell.

I bought a six-pack of this on a whim after seeing it and longing for a Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier.

I had one with dinner tonight, it poured very nicely, with a firm head that lasted a while. Taste was a huge surprise, I've had a lot of bad weissbier and I wasn't expecting much, but this was very good. Not quite as complex as the Weihenstephaner or some of the other highly-touted Bavarian brews, but very good with a good mix of flavors. I could easily drink several of these, in fact, I'm going to go have another.

Not too bad for the price. It's nice to pay $5 for a sixer and get a quality beer. Drank out of a .33 L Sturtzel (sp?). I tell you what, this beer isn't much on the wheaty yeasty twang, and I could not detect any clove, but it sure has bananas and a bit of bubblegum. Not so much to be cloying or anything, but a nice pleasant dry fruitiness. This puppy is very drinkable.

this is a nice looking beer, but is thick and very fruity in the nose and is so middle-tongue sweet i had to cut it with with lemonade just to be able to drink it. the sharper-flavored west coast hefeweizens (pyramid, among others) are cleaner and bear more resemblance to their namesake. not recommended.

poured a cloudy dark wheat color with 1" of head that faded really fast.

smells like a true hefe with strong banana and cloves with a slight hint of citrus.

the taste was not bad but finished spicy, almost like black pepper, expecting smooth creamy sweet finish.

light bodied almost too light

overall a good version of a hefe. light and refreshing a good choice for hot summer day. can't beat the price either

Pours hazy straw yellow. The head is a crisp white mass that quickly dissipates.

Aroma is surprisingly rich and full. Great bananna bread and bubble gum notes. Mild lemon zest.

Taste is similiar to the aroma, though not as rich as in the nose. Also there is the addition of light spices and apple fruitiness. Finish is dry and clean.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied.

A worthwhile hefe. Great aroma. I would pick this one up again.

Poured a cloudy dark orange with a creamy white head, decent retention, and solid lacing.

Smell is very good with a crisp granny smith apples, oranges, and banana's all coming through.

Taste is light, sweet, and fruity, with a nice bit of yeast coming through, has some typical german hefe notes with banana's and cloves being present, a light bit of hops in the finish, but still finishes sweet.

Mouthfeel is creamy and suprisingly full bodied for this light of beer.

Very easy to drink and enjoyable, just a bit on the sweet side. A pretty nice stab at the German classic.

Poured to a light orange color with medium off-white head that lingered well and left okay lacing. Pleasant aroma of spices (mostly clove), oranges, apples and cookie dough led to a somewhat tingly mouthfeel. Spices and fruits were carried over perfectly into the flavor, making this a most enjoyuable beer. I would have gone higher, except the finish was a little stale, but nothing too serious.

Good Job Trader Joe!!

Poured into a weizen glass this hefe yeilds a full three fingers of head. Several minutes later at least 2 pillow-y fingers remain atop an unfiltered orange liquid.

I continue to be surprised by this brew; strong bubblegum scent is aided by a subtle clove aroma. A touch of lemon and banana resides on the back end but are fleeting at best.

The yeast is what jumps out at you right away with a milder incarnation of the bubblegum up front. Hints of spice trail off into a great wheat twang.

Thick, slightly chewy body with a sharp, biting finish. I'm stunned that I've enjoyed this beer as much as I have. Hefeweizens aren't my favorite style but I find this to be an outstanding example of the genre. Easily the best TJ's contract brew I've tried.

Pours a moderately cloudy golden-orange color topped by a sizeable, creamy white head that sticks around for about a minute before receding to a thin ring. Aroma of crisp wheat and some nice, assertive esters - banana, clove, and bubblegum. Palate is mildly sweet malt and wheat, again accented by the same esters as the nose. Finish is sweet and heavy on the banana. Body is light and lively. This is surprisingly good for being in TJ's private label line. One of the best American-made hefeweizens I've had.

One of the better domestic hefe's I have tried.
Color is a bit darker than average but thats not a bad thing.
Cloudy orange with a firm white head.
Aroma is a nice balance of clove and bannana.
Taste like a good hefe should with just a touch of citrus.
I could easily finish a sixer of this.

Well they hit this one out of the park. A nice semi-cloudy yellow with a nice chunky head. Smell is overwhelmingly banana and yeasty. Fucking cheap beer that uses the right yeast or a good enough artificial flavor to fool me. Whatever this is nice hefe if only they left it completely unfiltered. Still nice mouthfeel and very drinkable. Drink a lot for under $5 a six.

Poured a very cloudy orange with a nice two finger head. Aroma is overpowering banana. Almost artifical smell and unappealing to me. Taste is big banana, yeast, and some spice. Mouthfeel is good for a wheat. Drinkability is hurt by the strong banana. It's a little too pina colada for me. Might be a good beer for those who don't like stronger stuff. A good deal at less than $1/bottle.

Appearance- Slightly hazy amber/pumpkin color with a decent off-white head. Has some head retention. No lacing at all..

Aroma- Yeast and light lemon with a wheat base. Also get something that smells like bubble gum. No hop aroma at all.

Taste- Nice clean but not crisp wheat base with some yeast and a hint of banana and nice lemon zest. No hops, no clove. Pretty much a basic hefe.

Mouthfeel- Medium body. Carbonation level good. Nice dry finish.

Drinkability- Not the greatest hefe, but pretty decent.

I like picking up new stuff at Trader Joe's because the affordability makes taking a shot on an unknown worth it unless the beer really blows monkeys (the Fat Weasel was pretty close). This pours an unusually dark hue for a hefewizen, almost approaching dunkel color, but does keep a moderately dense, tight head and plenty of carbonation to back it up. Nose is beautiful banana clove combo with a tint of bubble gum and a nasty metallic note that brings down the score a full point. Oh well, what do you expect for 92 centavos?

Although the slight hint of metal remains to mar the taste, it is almost invisible until the aftertaste and the overall banana and clove do the job quite well. Malt and wheat are both present and produce a bready flavor with a nice spice kick. The big problem is the overdose of carbonation that overwhelms all flavors for the entire first half of each sip. Otherwise, texture is fairly thick and works well. This is definitely a workable hefe, just wish they'd mellow that bubble action and they'd definitely have something here.

mouthfeel: high carbonation and light body

taste: Clean wheat base with a healthy dose of yeast and moderate banana. Light lemon and bland noble hops. Somewhat watery. Very light bitterness and clean in the finish. Slightly mineraly. Not much to it, but definately not bad for around $0.80 a single.

The orange hued beer with golden highlights is very much a hefeweizen, especially the strong nose of clove and bananas and spice that was even stronger with the head. Unfortunately, the taste didn't live up to the smell, being a bit flat compared to what I expected from the nose. Light, a bit thin maybe, but not too bad, and clearly not a disappointment, though I didn't have my expectations terribly high. Nothing wrong with it, and a nice refreshing hefe.
