look: 3.5 | smell: 2.5 | taste: 2 | feel: 3 | overall: 1.5

Appearance: gold in color, 1 inch head, hazy

Smell: banana, wheat, and clove

Taste: bananas, clove, wheat, and a medicinal taste as well

Mouthfeel: medium bodied, high carbonation, slightly sweet

Drinkability: This one tastes a bit too medicinal for me. The basic flavors are there, but I did not care for the aftertaste. One and done for me. There are lots better in the style.

A murky golden wheat beer here, pouring with a hearty, thick head into my ale glass. Scent of clove & yeast, with a slight citrus taste that well offsets the sharpness. A well-balanced mix of sweet and spice, this is a solid drinking hefe, and much more enjoyable than Trader Joe's dunkelweizen.

Trader Joe's has here a decent Hefe, and cheap enough. Unfiltered, slightly darker orange than I was expecting, good head retention. Hits all the usual wheat / clove / 'nanner esters. Full bodied, surprisingly solid. A little too much banana in the nose and not as crisp and sharp as I'd like, but this is solid. Falls somewhere just south of fresh Franziskaner, really. You could do a lot worse.

Pours a hazed orange amber with a two-finger frothy head with admirable retention. Spotted lacing throughout session. Impressive aromas of bananas and cloves.

All banana and clove spice opening with indications of wheat beer yeast in the background. Crisp and refreshing mouthfeel with moderate carbonation and a creamy texture. Banana flavor is soon supplemented with suggestions of bubble gum and a hint of strawberry. Malted wheat begins to assert itself, while the hop presence takes a back seat. Finishes grainy with a blast of spice.

Refreshing and drinkable, the only fault I can find with the taste profile is that it borderlines on malt sweetness. Other than that, TJ's Bavarian Style Hefeweizen is true to style and oh-so-affordable. Add this one to your Summer Session list.

Purchased for 5.99 plus deposit at the Union Square Joe's, not a bad deal at all; poured into a weizen glass.

A- Nice thick head that laced all the way down the glass, a little less cloudy than I would have liked to see.

S- Heavy on the banana and some faint citrus in the back end.

T- So much clove, but in a good way.

M- A little over carbonated, could have been smoother.

D- It went really well with the chicken I was having, could definitely stand on its own as well.

For a dollar a bottle, it's worth picking up whenever I make trip down into the city.

12 Ounce brown bottle poured into a weizen glass

Appearance: Yellow/orange in color with a good amount of head that remains for a while. It is slightly cloudy but not entirely opaque.

Smell: Smells very banana like with a slight floral smell.

Taste: Very good banana and spice taste. Sweet but not overpoweringly sweet.

Note: I was actually very surprised with this beer, being from Trader Joe's I didn't expect anything really great but this is really good.

A new Trader Joes opened up in my neighborhood on 72nd Street on Broadway on Manhattan's upper west side. I had heard a lot of good things about their beers. They seem to have a number of brands: The basic "made in mexico" brand. The Mission Street, which is a collaboration with Firestone Walker. And the "german" series, which this is part of.

The Hefeweizen is pretty authentic and pretty tasty, especially since it's not my favorite style of beer. I enjoyed the twelve ounce glass of it and it had all the characteristics you expect from this style including banana aroma, good wheaty flavor and color. Very carbonated and good.

Very simply---if this weren't a Trader Joe's beer, it would have higher marks--I'd bet anything.

At least here on the West Coast, there are no examples of this style, at any price point, that compare to this beer. Heater-Allen, the only contender in Oregon, way more expensive and neither as good, nor as consistent as this beer. While not in class with the best German hefeweizens, it's damn close and an absolute steal for the price.

A: cloudy orange/amber, very nice creamy head that subsides fairly quickly.

S: all the hallmarks of a good hefe: banana, clove, bubblegum, and I would put them in that rank order for this hefe.

T: the three aforementioned flavors mingle in the intro, the middle releases lemon poppy seed muffin, a hint of acidity, and some fruity esters, the finish dries somewhat, and there is no hop aftertaste.

M: light to medium weight, somewhat slick on the tongue, and presents moderate carbonation.

D: this is a very good hefe for the money. For those on a tight budget, TJs is a great source for good beer at low prices.

Shared a 6-pack with friends over the weekend. This was a fine, affordable hefeweizen that reminded me of a slightly simpler Franziskaner. There's a big clove and banana character, but it lacks the depth of the greatest hefes. I'd say this is a good party beer and gateway beer. It's tasty and drinkable.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a weizen glass

This beer pours a hazy golden color with an orange-ish hue, and has a huge bright white foamy head that recedes quickly.

The aroma is a sharp and spicy wheat at first. As the beer warms the banana and cloves really start to become dominant. I also get hints of bubble gum and some mild nutty notes.

The taste is closer to an american wheat than to a german hefe. As the beer warms the banana becomes more noticable and the sharpness of the lemony flavor dulls some. There is a fair amount of clove and bubble gum flavor which opens up as the beer warms. Really quite a nice beer. Medium body and mild carbonation leads to an easy drinking beer.

A - Cloudy carrot-juice colored brew with a medium sized head that dissipates pretty quickly. Agitation stirs up some foam, and some thick lace slides down the glass. This is super-cloudy and thick in appearance... looks yeasty.

S - Big time Bazooka Joe bubble gum backed with a spritz of lemon. Bready. Yeasty.

T - Much more tart and citrusy on the initial sip, then doughy and yeasty on the back end. Some spices are there too.

M - Medium bodied, but thickly carbonated. Crisp and tart at first despite the rounder doughy feel at the end. Leaves a yeasty wax coating on the tongue after a sip. Nice!

D - This is a very nice example of a hefe. I'm actually quite surprised at the level of quality in this relatively cheap house brand of beer. Go Trader Joe!

A - Light and murky with a fairly thick head.

S - Smells like banana and wheat.

T - Not one of the better Hefeweizens out there but for $1 it's hard to beat.

M - Pretty good body, especially for such a cheap beer.

D - On a hot day this is a pretty good option.

A - Rich pour topped with a light tan head that fades at a medium pace. The body is a cloudy and dingy orange.

S - Banana and bold wheat aromas.

T - Starts out as a mild mannered hefe. The middle leaves you wondering where the flavors went. Then in the end you get a nice kick of subtle spice and robust wheat. Well done with the exception of the abrupt changes from flavor to flavor.

M - The feel is rather coarse for a hefe. Perhaps the heavy carbonation is common for a Bavarian style.

~ Overall this is a good drinkable beer. I will recommend his to friends and I suggest it be consumed on a nice summer day.

Wife bought a single from Trader Joe's to consume. Pilsner glass pour and I am met with a cloudy, hazy straw colored ale with a bright white foamy head that sits proudly on top. Banana dominated aroma with some bubble gum, coriander and pears also in the mix. Taste is somewhat fruity and spicy with a lot of carbonation going on. The carbonation is somewhat distracting. A little smoothness would have been nice. Slight lingering fruity aftertaste. Drinkability is very good and at 5.3% multiples are easily had. Refreshing and palate friendly. Reminded me of some higher priced Hefe's and worth a shot for the low price alone. Give it a chance.

Appearance: Lots of foam that dissipates quickly. Pretty good. Leaves very little lacing and is more transparent and bubbly than more well-known hefeweizens. Still looks dark orange and brown.

Smell: Just banana.

Taste/Mouthfeel: Good smoothness for sure. Very tasty in my opinion. Not as complex as other hefeweizens, but maybe a great gateway for this style of beer. Thumbs up! Lots of bubblegum and banana. You can definitely taste the yeast.

Drinkability: It's not offensive, so that's good. Very pleasant!

Overall: Like I said, a great gateway hefeweizen. Tame yet flavorful and tasty.

This beer isn't all that complex, but it is tasty, refreshing and very drinkable. It's a simple, recognizable hefeweizen, with readily recognizable banana and clove, etc. Trader Joe brand beers are great for this sort of thing: inexpensive (usually $6.49 or $6.99 for a 6 pack), yet drinkable and tasty, though obviously not for connoisseurs.

A- Pours a hazy soft cantaloupe color, fizzy 2 fingers of head, settles down to a light sparse frothy cap on the beer, no lacing.

S- Orange, wheat, light other citrus, mild vanilla and cream, slight banana ester and yeast.

T- The aromas are nicely reflected and reiterated in the flavor. Light citrus, orange peal, mandarin, even some light melon. Not getting any spice note at all, which I really desire in a Hef. Nice beer, true to the style, slightly high carbonation.

M- High crisp carbonation, too much in my opinion, very light thin texture, slightly acidic bite, very slight bitter finish.

D- Nice drinkable warm weather beer, fits for a Bavarian Hef, light fresh, good quality, good price, but leaves me wanting more complexity and depth. This is a good value though for the price, and certainly worth the try.

Color and foam are average and middle of the road for style. I found the aroma and flavor to be very poor: below average for what should be a safe style. The nose has a lot of banana that doesn't let up in the flavor. The sweetness is almost up to the level of coconut. No balance from any spicing. The mouthfeel is sturdy and pleasant, but I found this nearly unpalatable after about halfway through. Not good enough.

Poured from a bottle into a German Pilsner glass. The color is bright golden and hazy, with a white head that retains and leaves lacing on the side.

The aroma is appropriate for a Hefeweizen: there is fruity banana, some bubblegum and clove. Bready with the tiniest presence of hops in the background.

The taste is sweet from the malt, and spicy from the yeast. Nothing is overwhelming, but a balanced beer.

Mouthfeel is a bit over-carbonated and thin to me.

Overall, a decent beer for a good price.

A: An aggressive pour produces a 5 finger head that doesn't budge. The head was very creamy initially. This beer is an opaque orange color, like any typical German hefe. The headf izzles down to a cap by the time it is finished, but the head stayed at a one to two finger most of the way through. Ok to low amounts of lacing. 3.5

S: Bubblegum is upfront with some banana esters in the background. Clove is a little muted in the aroma compared to some of the big German hefes, but remains as a strong contender overall. More aromatic than I expected, even a bit citrusy with a hint of german hops to round out the esters. The malt is a bit buried and the aroma lacks a bit of complexity. 4

T: This is a bit of a rollercoaster of a beer. At first, I didn't expect much out of this beer due to it being a Trader Joe's house beer and the ratings here on BA, but after smelling it and seeing it in my glass, it started looking like it could be a good hefe. The first sip was a bit disappointing, the malt is immediately thin and the esters are blown out of proportion; soon after, a sudden metallic-like flavor hits the palate. The second and so on sips reveal an average hefe with a macro-like metallic overtone, though the metallicness isn't too strong to make it an issue.

If it weren't for the thin malt, this beer would be a decent example of a typical run-of-the-mill Hefeweizen. The taste is upfront with bubblegum, banana, and clove-like ester flavors. Hops are unnecessarily muted compared to better German examples. The malt isn't too sweet, but lacks complexity and flavor overall. There is nothing special or groundbreaking in the flavor overall, all of this has been done better by most German-brewed Hefeweizens. 3

M: A tad over-carbonated with a thin body, way too watery compared to other hefes. The body reminds me of Blue Moon, which is unacceptable in a hefeweizen. 2.5

D: Complexity is a bit low and I could get bored of this one after awhile. That said, I could drink another one of these if it was a hot day and I wanted a refreshing beer. 4

O: Nothing new, but a decent hefe for a relatively low price. This beer actually tastes like a German Hefeweizen despite the faults. The flaws kill the ratings here, but I probably enjoyed this beer more than most beers I rate a B/B-. This would be a good intro hefe for those that are transitioning from macros.

12 ounce bottle poured into a pint glass. Cloudy orange color with an explosive white head. Huge white suds, too much even for a hefe. Sorta fizzy, leaving a little lacing as it recedes. Aroma is overripe banana and bubblegum with a glaring lack of clove. Creamy vanilla banana flavor with the slightest hint of spiciness in the back of the palate. Sweet and one-dimensional. Mouthfeel is way too bubbly. It's hard to drink without swirling out tons of carbonation. Finish is a little unclean.

Beer pours a cloudy dark golden color with a big pillow of white head. The aroma bubbles with clove, banana, even some bubble gum. Light on the palate. Not as chewy as I would expect for a wheat beer. The flavor starts watery, but builds toward the end into something pleasant.

Nothing stands out with this beer, but it is drinkable and enjoyable nonetheless.

Pretty good beer. Hints of citrus but not overtly so. Interesting sour taste at first and a smooth finish. Although I found that after the second or third beer it began to taste odd or bitter. I don't know why that is, but I will stick to drinking these one at a time.

Poured a bright and hazy medium copper hue with a two ginger frothy white head. There was good retention and lacing.

The smell featured yeast esters - clove and banana.

The taste consisted of a balmy sweet malt, wheat spice, and a touch of metal.

The mouthfeel was a bit full for the style.

Overall a decent hefe at a great price.
