12 oz. bottle, best by 2/2012,

A: Pours a hazy cloudy amber with a medium white head. Solid lace.

S: Great banana nose with a hint of honey and bubblegum. Reminds me a lot of Mission Hefe.

T: Some tangy lemon upfront. Lots of wheat malt taste, light acidity, bubblegum finish,

M: Light-bodied, very crisp and biting. Mild acidity, very direct.

O: Almost a hybrid of the hefe and American wheat style. Has the flavours of a hefe but with the crisp and acidity play of and APWA. Well made for sure, a steal at $6/6er.

Bottled purchased from Trader Joe's in Omaha, NE.
Best by 3/12/2012.
Poured into a Weihenstephaner weizen glass.

Pours a large head, though perhaps small for the style of fairly small bubbles that form a tight, off-white mass of foam. Declines over a minute to a solid cap, 0.5cm high, on top of the beer at all times. Body is dark orange-brown out of light, lighter gold color when in. Hazy from suspended yeast, carbonation that supports the head somewhat visible.

Aroma of ripe bananas, clove, allspice, dilute wheat malt, applesauce, and some vanilla. Not bad, not bad at all.

Taste opens with wheat malt sweetness on the tip of the tongue, switching to a nice banana flavor mid-palate that lingers throughout the tasting. Also appearing are clove, allspice, and bubblegum. Slight taste of ethanol, surprising for a 5.3% ABV beer. The banana ester is a bit high in the finish, but not overwhelming. A few knocks, but still fairly tasty.

Beer is medium-bodied, a bit watery around the edges, with about a medium-level of carbonation. Carbonation allows for a fairly creamy mouthfeel to develop. Finish is quite dry.

Unless my bottle is way fresher or an improved recipe than what some people are reviewing, this is a fairly underappreciated beer. Actually more enjoyable, as in full in flavor, (or more fresh, not sure) than several export German hefeweizens I've had. If you see it, grab one, and review with an open mind.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a pilsner glass.

Appearence: Pours a hazy straw color with two fingers of creamy white head. Some lacing is apparent as I drink the brew.

Smell: Strong banana bread hits you first, with mild notes of clove beneath it.

Taste: Definite banana bread and spice notes, with perhaps a bit of grapefruit in there as well. Very pleasant.

Mouthfeel: Creamy, but a bit on the light side. Not amazing but not bad, either.

Overall: For $1 a bottle at my local Trader Joe's, it's a good choice. Not outstanding but a good value with good flavor.

12 fl oz brown glass bottle with standard pressure cap served into stemware in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Reviewed live.

A: Pours a half finger head of slight cream, bad thickness, and bad retention. Colour is a nontransparent caramel copper.

Sm: Heavy fermented banana is all that comes through. A moderate strength aroma.

T: Banana up front, with clove and spice on the climax over a malted wheat foundation. It's a little heavy on the banana for a hefeweizen; maybe a different yeast is in order. Complex enough and effectively built and balanced.

Mf: A bit too sharp. Certainly overcarbonated, resulting in an unpleasant fizzy coarseness. It's wet and somewhat refreshing as well.

Dr: Quite drinkable and excellently priced. I'd try it if I found it on draught, but it's nothing special.

Poured from 12 oz bottle into weizen glass.
A: Pours a hazy golden yellow with high carbonation producing a 2 inch billowy white head. Not half bad.
S: Nice clove, banana, and mild sweet caramel malt aroma.
T: Uh oh...nose-dive here. Watery, off balance, and just not tasting right. Jumbled mess of banana, clove, and malt. Not good.
M: Light body. Thin and watery.
D: I was about to be amazed by this beer up until the taste. DP. Bottomline--don't waste your time.

look: 3.5 | smell: 4 | taste: 3.5 | feel: 3.5 | overall: 3.5

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance: The Trader Joe's Bavarian Hefeweizen has a sandy golden color with a hazy center and a soft frothy white head. It fades to a ring pretty quickly and doesn't bother leaving any lace.

Smell: Banana really dominates the aroma. Some light clove is there as well. Cereal grains provide the support.

Taste: The flavor is more malt centric than the aroma. Bready grains bring a honey sweetness. Moderate banana flavor and some hushed clove spiciness come out of the yeast, but overall it is fairly clean.

Mouthfeel: Very typical mouthfeel for the style. Slightly creamy carbonation, a little bit grainy, sticky sweet, with a light to medium body.

Overall: This is another acceptable beer from TJ's. Better than BMC for sure, but it is not quite up to basic craft beer standards.

Pours a golden with nice white head.

The smell is fairly crisp with some banana but a good helping of clove type spices to balance.

The taste is leaning more towards the spice esters. A good helping of banana but it is not a banana bomb by any means. A good amount of malt on the back. Overall a pretty basic hefe.

Solid beer especially for the price. I also don't think I've had a hefe I didn't like and this is just another solid one to add to the list. I think it was $5.99 a 6 pack.

This beer pours a nice cloudy tangerine orange in color with a slight white lacing around the glass. It smells of sweet yeasty bananas with some clove. It's pretty on par for what it should be. It tastes of sweet and yeasty bananas with a touch of spice. It's pretty solid for the style. It's sweeter than some and better than a lot of beers that I've had that have been more expensive. It drinks between light to medium in body and leaves behind a nice bubble gum esque aftertaste. It's a solid hefe. I'm surprised this came from Trader Joe's.

Cloudy peach with a soapy white cap that disappeared quickly. Cloves and lemons with some bready malt and mild banana. The flavour was more muted, bit still consisted of caramel sweetness, bready malt, citrus/banana sweetness and a bit of spice. Medium bodied with low carbonation, it felt a little lifeless. Overall, very mediocre wit some faults, but still fairly drinkable.

My fiance got me a Trader Joe's six pack, and I'm so glad she included the hefeweizen. I never even knew they made beers, but they know what they're doing.

The color is an amber orange with enough carbonation to keep it slightly foamed. Not too much citrus, some clove, banana bread taste. I didn't really pick up the bubblegum though.

If you go to Trader Joe's, this is a must.

A: Pours a dark burnt orange color with about a one finger tan head that has pretty good retention.

S: Banana, clove and a touch of bubblegum with a slight hint of rubbing alcohol. The rubbing alcohol smell fades as the beer warms.

T: The wheat is there, but it's pretty subtle. Some banana and a little yeast along with some malt flavor towards the finish. One of the better Trader Joes beers.

Served in a Devil's Backbone weizen glass.

Back for some more TJ lovin', baby. This bit pours a mostly clear golden sunset amber topped by a finger of light cream-white foam. The nose comprises white bread, orange zest, black pepper, clove, banana peel, and a touch of lemon. The taste drops the breadiness and a good portion of the spice, leaving a mild melange of orange, lemon, light pineapple, light black pepper, nutmeg, and very light grapefruit. A hint of honey may or may not be involved, depending on which taste bud you ask. The body is a hefty light, with a very light moderate carbonation and an ever-so-slightly watery feel. Overall, a pretty nice hefe, one of the best I've found in terms of a taste-to-price ratio. Dammit, TJ, you know how to keep me coming back for more, don'tcha?

Big, yeasty German-style wheat.

Nice amber color in the snifter. Starts out clear and gets cloudier down the bottle. Rich and full of spicy Hefeweizen flavors. Lots of cloves on the tongue, and even more in the nose. Good aroma and the esters just don't quit. Touch of hops gives a bitter counterpoint, but restrained.

Seems sharper and more carbonated than I remember from tasting it over the years. Still one of my favorites for a lighter and highly affordable beer.

Respectable effort at a hefe...tan colored...big frothy head....aroma is a bit funky with a slight spoiled egg scent...also some overripe banana and bubble gum.

Wheaty flavor with notes of bubble gum and banana...finishes with a spritzy and strong lemon drop flavor..

Bigger bodied for the style....high side of medium...a lot of carbonation...

Decent

Poured from 12 oz. bottle into Duvel tulip glass.

Appearance: Murky yellow orange with a lot of bubbles. Small white head fades into a white layer. Good lacing.

Smell: Strong scent of bananas, yeast, and clove with a touch of citrus. Some spice as well.

Taste: Sweet combination of banana, bubble gum, and cloves with lots of wheat. Slightly tart and spicy.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with carbonation on the higher side. Crisp and smooth.

Overall: A pretty good American version of a Hefeweizen.

Pours a clouded orange-amber under a tall head that fills the glass to the brim before quickly dropping to a modest ring. Rich, creamy banana and caramel aroma...almost doughy and light on the clove. Ripe banana, wheat, a touch of vanilla, and light lemon zest. Sweet and well-rounded, finishing with a refreshing dryness. Medium bodied and creamy. A solid American hefe and an excellent value...

12oz bottle served in a standard shaker pint.

pours a very hazy dull golden yellow with 2" spritzy head that quickly recedes; not much lacing to speak of.

nose is solid but not wowing; offers banana and clove with secondary notes of bubblegum and wheat.

taste isn't bad, follows the aroma pretty closely. a bit on the sweet side with the banana, clove, and bubblegum flavors all pulling through. definitely a wheaty presence. reasonably enjoyable.

medium-light bodied with slightly above average carbonation.

overall this is a decent, drinkable beer and reasonably priced.

poured from a bottle into a Weizen glass.

A- the pour produced a cloudy straw yellow with almost two finger widths of white head. Looked to be in line with the traditional style of the hefeweizen.

S- During the pour the smell of bananas was strong. Also some detection of cloves. Very sweet and spicy smelling

T- Hit with the taste of cloves and bananas at first then some sweetness from the wheat and malt used. Some notes of bubblegum can be detected in the aftertaste for me.

M- Decent carbonation with a very light to medium body.

O- Very drinkable. This one can go down pretty quickly. Fits well with the style of "Bavarian Hefeweizen." This is a good beer to have available during the summer time.

Murky apricot with an inverted waterfall of uprushing bubbles on the near side of the glass. The head consists of three fingers of pale khaki colored foam that develops a softly sculpted rockiness as it descends. Love the unfiltered look.

The nose features slightly darker than pale malts (probably a small amount of caramel), cereal grains, bruised banana and clove. The next highest smell score is in sight, but probably won't be reached.

Bavarian Style Hefeweizen is an acceptable version for the price. It isn't about to put a scare into Germany's best... or even America's best for that matter. An estery yeast strain definitely helps the cause.

Flavors include lightly toasted bread, light caramel notes, monkey fruit, a dash of ground clove, and hints of lemon peel that add a little too much tartness. The hefeweizen banan-o-meter score is a respectable 2.5/5.0. Each mouthful leaves me wanting a more well-brewed beer.

The body/mouthfeel favors the light end of light-medium and is too sharply bubbled. The carbonation has settled down to some extent in the 10 minutes since the pour, but it's still borderline annoying. Lush and creamy here might have elevated the scores on either side.

Bavarian Style Hefeweizen isn't a bad choice if you happen to be in Trader Joe's and have a hankering for banana-flavored beer. That said, it's no Stockyard Oatmeal Stout. You're better off sticking with the really good Bavarian hefeweizens that, thankfully, aren't that hard to find in this country.

Poured a cloudy darker straw yellow color. Quite a bit of head. Smells heavy with grains with a bit of citrus color coming through. Tastes about the same with quite a bit of citrus. Very smooth drinking beer. I could put down quite a few of these. This is a very good tasting hefeweizen.

12oz bottle served in a weizen glass.

L - murky, amber/gold color with a off-white head that thinned to a ring.

S - banana, bubblegum and sweet wheat.

T - banana and bubblegum upfront finishing with a sweet wheat taste.

F - light/medium bodied with good carbonation.

D - goes down easy enough.

Interestingly darker than usual appearance for a hefe. Aroma to style, wheat and clove, belgianesque feel to it.

Taste, chalky, gritty, plenty of water soluble wheat feel to it. Yeasty, did I shake this up or something a little much? Stays away from hops, slight banana tinge later on. Not a bad effort, not great. Decent price, but nothing I'd try again.

A - Poured into a pils glass. A cloudy, orange color with golden tones. It had a foamy, bubbly, white, three-finger head that left a little lace on the glass.

S - Smells of clove, banana, bubblegum, wheat.

T - Nicely sweet with the flavors of banana and clove balancing it out. No hop bitterness as it should be. Some mild lemon tartness at the finish with lingering sweet & banana.

M - It was crisp and sharp. Good balanced carbonation. Light bodied beer.

D - This is a really good attempt at a true German/Bavarian hefe. The aromas and taste was quite impressive. Not world class, of course, but at this price; this beer is a great deal ($ 5.99 a sixer) and one I will want to have in the fridge all summer long. Why drink a junky macro as a lawnmower beer if I can have this?

A - Nice unfiltered yellow.

S - Good amounts of banana, cloves, and yeast. Pretty solid smell, nothing too great but good.

T - A little more sublte than the smell, but solid tast.

M - Good amount of carbonation and had a nice spicy kick from the yeast.

D - I will yearn for this on a nice warm spring day, partly from the taste, but mostly for the price.

Buy again? - Yes
Recommend? - Yes
Drink if offerered - yes
Did my wife like it - Uh huh.

Overall - Not the best hef, but for the money and right occasion, a solid beer. It had good banana, clove, and yeast taste, and also the nice yeast kick that hefs usually have.

12oz bottle poured to a pint.

A- Nice yellow color with sort of a moccasin suede texture. Nice pillowy head. Fair retention.

S- Prototypical cloves and bananas. Nothing wild but exactly what you would expect. Good beer to give to a novice to experience euorpean wheat beer traits.

T- Nice spicy notes, but they dissapate quickly. A little grainy and the yeast struggles to come through fully.

M- A little wattery but appropriate carbonation. Finish is wet with a slightly mineral aftertaste.

D- Perfectly drinkable and at the price, hard to beat.
